Summary: Captivating at every point
Review: Winton seemed to capture the spirit of the place of Perth. Having lived there for three years myself, I felt that he did a good job. Perth is isolated, a town trying to be a city and searching for identity, like Australia in microcosm. As each individual searches for purpose, it becomes apparent that it was there all the time. It was them together, and in a peculiar way, it was Fish Lamb, the nexus of the two families who symbolised this. Although he was recessed deep within his soul, he bound the familys together and defined who they were, a kind of guardian angel in disguise.
