Review: Basically there is no plot to this story. The only likeable character is the oldest daughter who is cynical and spiteful about her mother's annoying ways and habits. The second half of the book is so drawn out, it makes you wonder if it'll ever end.

Review: I always finish a book I started but at times I was tempted to quit and take this to the local used bookstore for trade. The idea for a great story was there but here is the problem...there is no story...I can hardly believe someone is that ignorant of the size of our country that they would think everything is a hop, skip, and jump away...Lila Mae is not a strong or smart character nor is she someone I can identify with. The reader is dragged across the country and then the book jumps to part two (her in her old age) before even getting you to California in Part One. For a huge gap, you wonder what the heck happened to her husband and what the deal is...I mean, why doesn't she get in any hurry to join him? I only gave this a two because I was mildly interested at times about what might happen to finish this novel. I would not recommend this book to anyone who likes books with a good plot, good dialogue, or interesting characters because all are absent here.

Review: I had a horrible time reading this novel. The characters were great, but the plot just didn't make much sense. The second half seemed to be from a different novel and didn't really mesh with the cross-country drive. I would suggest The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver as an alternative.

Review: I kept reading in the hopes that something interesting would develop. Instead, I found the cure for insomnia. The characters are vapid, their journey inexplicable and the results hollow. I feel cheated. Who can I talk to for a refund?

Review: I know and understand her not only from the pages of this wonderful book but from people I observe every day, not to mention the part of myself that just must try to get a little more from life than anyone else might think I am entitled to. I am so glad I didn't read the Kirkus review before I bought this book. I totally agree with the reviewer who wrote of the "things not said". Ms Bruckheimer made it so easy to read between the lines. That is a great talent. This book will stay with me a long time.
