Rating: Summary: Disappointingly ordinary... Review: (2.5 stars) Danticat is talented, without a doubt, but this book is a short story clumsily (and barely) stretched to novel length, chock full of archetypes and allegories but not nearly enough character development. In the end, you don't really know or care about anybody or anything; what should be an intense and emotionally harrowing story ends up flat and unfulfilling. It's a Lifetime TV movie-of-the-week. With an accent.
Rating: Summary: Breath, Eyes, Memories Review: Breath, Eyes, Memories is alot more than just a book, It describes things that happen in everyday life. Finding out that somthing in your life is a mistery is a big thing, but to have all of it be a lie it is about to get interesting. Sophie didn't know that the women that she had lived with her whole life wasn't her mother. She found out on mother's day that Tante Atie wasn't her mother and that her real mom didn't even live in the same country. Sophie's mother Martine wasn't able to take care of her, because she had became bulimic after she got rapped by a masked man in a field. She went to see her mother in New York. She met a man named Joesph that was a professional musician. They dated for a while then her mom died, because of all the stomach problems she had. Joesph seemed to be the only person Sophie wanted to be with. They eventually got married and had a baby named Brigitte. I think that this is a great story for any one who has ever lost someone or something. This is a very confusing story if you try to take long breaks between reading. This book introduces too many people all of a sudden, so its made for more advanced readers. I give this book 2 stars **.
Rating: Summary: Breath, eyes.memory Review: I read this book and I got a little confused about the people in the book because I really didn't know at first who the albino man was. At the end I realized who he was and he was the guy that sold lotto tickets to Sophies aunt. I would recommend this book to anyone because everyone is differnet in there own little way, so I think others would enjoy it better than i did.
Rating: Summary: Sweet and heartfelt Review: This was a pretty good book, better than I expected, an easy read. The main character was likable and it was easy to feel for her. The story was sad and makes you think about the lives of women in Haiti and those who immigrate to America. Worth picking up and reading.
Rating: Summary: Illumination Review: An illuminating understanding of the Haitian woman through generations of grandmother thru granddaughter. The struggle of survival thru tradition. A wonderful book, very heart wrenching.
Rating: Summary: Sophie's Choice Review: Edwidge Danticat's novels and stories are written in a style that could only be told through her lyrical evocative prose. How else could all the pain and the horror of Haiti's history be transmuted into such a "terrible beauty"? Sophie's struggle for freedom is ours.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful book! Review: I really loved this book. I thought it was one of the most moving I had ever read. The writer does a great job capturing a young voice, which matures as the book moves toward its end. Sophie and Martine and fantastic characters. We get them in pieces because that's how the girl's mind is working at the time, in fragments, which is a very accurate reconstruction of trauma and healing. Fabulous!
Rating: Summary: Fantastic! Review: This book was fantastic! Edwidge Danticat is a literary genius. The way that she describes people and events in this book are very graphic and you can feel what Sophie is going through. I finished this book in two days...couldn't put it down.
Rating: Summary: Underdeveloped and weak Review: ... Ms. Danticat's writing style is one step above "See Jack walk. See Jack run." The language and plot is designed for high school readers at best. Also, the story itself is a ridiculously sad cornucopia of traumatic events that are never explained fully enough. Most of them were pathetic attempts to gain more sympathy for the character, all of which FAIL. To top it all off, there are continuity flaws (those drive me crazy) in the book based on the age of the main character. Martine gets pregnant with Sophie as a result from a rape; Sophie's about 18 or 19 when she gets married; has the baby etc...Sophie mentions the rape happening 25 years ago. However based on the story, Sophie should only be about 20 or 21. Unless Martine or Sophie was pregnant for 4 years, this doesn't make sense. Did anyone else notice this? The reason I gave it 2 stars instead of one is because of the description of the Haiti and its people. Plus, you can't rate with halves. This book should never have made any book club's list.
Rating: Summary: breath eyes memory review Review: I thought this book was actually pretty interesting. I wasn't looking forward to reading it because it was assigned, and I usually don't like books that I have to read. But this one was pretty good. It was interesting reading about how Sophie and her mom both had the same type of problems. But I didn't like how they used so many Creole words because it sort of confused me. I also liked this book because Sophie moves to New York, and that's where I want to move when I get out of highschool. I would recommend this book to anyone who doesn't need a lot of full on action to keep them entertained, because lots of stuff happened and was going on, but it what sort of "behind the scenes" action.
