Rating: Summary: A good read Review: The book took too many different directions. The reader was left confused as to who was the main character. The characters got away with too much crime, making it unrealistic.
Rating: Summary: Great Drama, Poor Editing ! Review: This book immediately draws you in.It covers drugs, sex, love, money, jealousy, loyalty, killings etc. All of the makings of a great book. However, the author, Shannon Holmes skipped over a lot of details in the book. Not enough follow through w/the characters in the story. In addition, the book is poorly edited. It appears that Ms. Holmes was in a rush to get the book published. If Ms. Holmes continues to write more books, she needs to use another publishing company;one with excellent proof readers and editors on staff.
Rating: Summary: B-Very Careful! Review: After reading Coldest Winter I was told to by this book. I was not dissapointed. Although its not as realistic as "Winter" it is a great read with a twist.
Rating: Summary: Well written piece of current literature! Review: From the beginning, the writer draws you into the world of some aspects of inner city life. In my mind's eye, I could see people from my neighborhood in Philadelphia as I read each word. I was more interested in how the writer intertwined the characters throughout the novel. He artistically started in the present, gave background of the necessary characters and brought you back to the present and didn't skip a beat. I was able to guess the relationship, after the death of her mother! The book is full of drama, action, choices, relationships and most importantly PAIN. I read it in a day. I would not recommend it to middle schoolers due to the language and some of the content. However, the sad fact is that this book has just the type of content that a "non-reading student" would read. It is a sad commentary, regardless of the label "novel," that many people live their lives this way; but Thanks be to God, for His grace and His mercy, for He does provide an escape.
Rating: Summary: If you like Ghetto Fabulous¿ Review: Netta is everything one would expect of someone that grew up on the mean streets of one of Baltimore's toughest projects: Netta plays the "street" game well. Unfortunately, Netta has to find out the hard way that the glitz and glamour of the "ghetto fabulous" lifestyle catches up with you. Netta's mother, always strung out on drugs and alcohol, leaves her on several occasions with a nice elderly neighbor, Miss Mae. Netta grows very close to Miss Mae until her traumatic passing. It is with the death of this trusted guardian the streets get a hold of Netta. Shoplifting to get what she wants and selling what she lifts for money is how it all starts off, then she moves on to bigger and better things. While shoplifting Netta meets Mimi, an insecure young lady with her own set of problems. Having a lot in common, they become best friends quickly. Mimi introduces Netta to some of her hang out friends, Fila, Petey & Rasheeda. They call themselves the Pussy Pound, for obvious reasons. These young women hang out in clubs, looking for the `big ballers' (drug dealers making lots of money). No, they do not go for the corner sellers. (There's not enough money in that). With Netta's guidance, "the pound" goes after the suppliers: the ones with the `long' money. Netta first "hooks up" with Major. Major is all that his name implies and more. He pulls in thousands of dollars a day. He keeps Netta in everything designer, you name it he gives it to her: clothes, shoes, and cars. As is true with life, all good things must come to an end: tragedy strikes and Netta is on to the next baller. Now Black (another high rolling hustler) gives Netta the world and even trust her to hold his cash. A lot of bad timing on Netta's part leads to the end of the good times: Black finds out that Netta is just with him for the cash. From this point forward, the action really picks up and jealousy, betrayal, and hatred are the mainstays of this book. Shannon Holmes did a wonderful job of portraying "street life" in one of Baltimore's urban areas. This is a very good book and an easy read. The ending of the book is the best in my opinion for the simple fact of the twist and turns it takes. I was totally shocked by the ending. Another plus about this book is that there are no `slow' spots. I was on the edge of my seat, sneaking and reading at work, trying to find out what happens next. If you liked "The Coldest Winter Ever" or "True To The Game," you will love this book. Tracey R.E.A.L. Reviewers
Rating: Summary: you gotta b-more careful and read this book Review: If you loved the coldest winter ever and true to the game like i did, you will truly enjoy this book. it starts off a little slow in the first 2 chapters but once you get past that it is nothing but fast pace ghetto suspense and drama. it is action packed. you cannot put it down. trust me, this book is the bomb. get it
Rating: Summary: I'm in need of an editor! Review: B-more Careful by Shannon Holmes is a definite page turner, however the book is in dire need of a more experienced editor. It seems as if Mr. Holmes was in a rush to get this story published.
Rating: Summary: A Must Read!!! Review: I've never read a book that was full of drama and action from page one to the end until now. This is a must read and I am glad that I purchased this book. I am not sure of who did the proofreading, however, there were quite a bit of typographical errors which took away from book. Nevertheless, this book was really good. You won't be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: Keeping it R.E.A.L on the streets Review: If you thought you knew what the streets were about, there is still much more to be realized. Shannon Holmes bears all in this novel where nothing is sugar coated, and every action has its consequence. Holmes keeps it real in this vivid book about the life of one luscious, low-down girl named Netta. Living in the thugged out streets of Baltimore with no father and a junkie for a mother, Netta must find a way to escape from the madness that is her life. Finding some comfort in clothes and money Netta takes her first steps into the "game". When she meets Mimi the two of them bring it like it has never been brought before. Surrounded by the rest of the Pu**y Pound, they rule the streets where no good is the only good, and every day is an opportiunity to be rich. B-More Careful is a page turning thriller full of suspense, action, deception, betrayal, and revenge. As a contemporary novel, B-More Careful touches on everyday issues that spark hours of endless conversation. It was definitely a great read. Shannon Holmes should write a sequel!
Rating: Summary: Winter still haunts me Review: Being a young black sister, I can really relate to this book. Growing up in a society where, how you are seen is who you are, Winter, I feel you girl! This is by far the BEST book I have ever read. The ending hurt and I found myself wanting more. More from the ending and more (drama) from Midnight. I can only imagine how sexy he is. This book should be on the mandatory reading list at every highschool accross the country. There is a lot to learn here, alot that goes unsaid. All Hail Sister Souljah, you did it this time!
