Rating: Summary: Wedding Singer meets High Fidelity Review: I was much more entertained by this story of a 30-year-old New Jersey wedding musician than I had anticipated being. It's sort of a The Wedding Singer meets Nick Hornby page-turner as we follow the professional and romantic progress of guitarist Dave over the course of a summer, as he attempts to resolve his love of being a musician with the reality of being an adult and living at home. The male characters are all interesting and well-drawn, and while the commitment issues are somewhat hackneyed, it's excellent in portraying the ambivalence some of us have to "settling down."
Rating: Summary: a great book Review: Nick Hornby meets Rabbit Angstrom ? ( Among other more symbolic similarities, the scene where Dave throws the frisbee in the park reminded me of the basketball game in the first pages of Rabbt,Run.) This is just a terrific book that has great characters, background you'll constantly recognize, and lots of very intelligent humor. Highest recommendation.
Rating: Summary: A Pleasant Surprise Review: I was a little hesitant about reading the Wishbones, as I disliked Perrotta's "Election" immensely. This book seems like it was written by a different author altogether. A very easy read, but written well and creatively. It's a great book for everyone, but especially for folks in their late 20s and early 30s. Perrotta throws in a ton of past events that really take you back in time. And anyone who has ever wanted to be a rock star or have a career in music (as I once did) will feel like Perrotta has gotten into your head and heart. Highly recommend.
Rating: Summary: I wanted to like this, honest..... Review: ...but apart from the fact that Perotta has a deft way with words and has his rock 'n roll trivia down cold (quick, who is Mick Box?), I saw the turns the plot was going to take as soon as the main character says to his girlfriend of 15 years, "Let's get married." I don't know, maybe it's one of those books that really wants to be a movie...
Rating: Summary: Poignant and charming novel. Review: This book really took over my life while I was reading it. Dave's problems, in a way, became mine. I've never read a book with such interest before. This excellent book is about Dave, a guitar player in his mid-30's who was happy in a pretty sad life, but he still had a life. He proposed to Julie his girl-friend and can't forgive himself afterwards. After meeting Gretchen, the girl he's cheating on he starts to analyze his life. This book would make a wonderful movie and I hope someone will be able to make it. I must admit the only slight dissapointment I had with this book was the sad but truthful ending of just conforming. I'm not giving away what, so you'd still have interest in reading it.
Rating: Summary: beautifully written. about sad people though. Review: There's no doubt that Tom Perrotta is a terrific writer. His prose flows and one forgets that one's reading. He has a real ear for dialogue and emotional concerns of his characters, and he gets the life of a working musician absolutely right. Too bad his characters are all kind of stupid people. It was hard to empathize with them. In some ways, this is a book version of the film DINER.
Rating: Summary: Marvelous...funny, touching,....a great novel Review: A touching, humorous story about a thirtysomething musician facing the realities of "growing up" is the backbone of this wondeful novel by Tom Perrotta. If you enjoy rock n' roll, love, sex and laughing out loud, this is the book for you! It's also a touching love story about friendship and romance. A must read!
Rating: Summary: "...Just one more song..." Review: This book was so good...it simply restored my faith in the novel. Dear Tom, where-ever you are, please send more stories...
Rating: Summary: Fun and some real insights into the male mindset Review: This book reminded me of some of those British comedies about the average workingman - Brassed Off, the Committments- who have dreams of greatness. In fact I'd love to see it as a movie. I felt like I really understood Dave and I liked him even though he could be a real butthead sometimes. I'd recommend it to anyone.
Rating: Summary: Characters you know and (believe it or not!)love... Review: I couldn't put this book down....If you've ever been a musician, or been friends with a musician, you know these guys! The author's of music is infectious, and you'll look at wedding bands with a new respect after reading this book. Full of wonderfully real moments, The Wishbones gets you into the head of a regular guy (and as a regular girl, I always enjoy such an opportunity)and will have you laughing every step of the way. Although Dave, the main character, is 32 years old, I would call this his coming-of-age story. After all, how many Americans really "come of age" in their teens or early twenties? Dave reluctantly lets go of a piece of his adolescence in this story. Will he ever completely let go? I hope not!
