Rating: Summary: Helpless and hopeless book Review: I'm astonished by the author's cheek. They simply can't write. Practically any author in the Republic of Pemberley (including 12 years old girls) writes better, with more style and more understanding of the epoch. More childish example of Austen's sequel I never read! My recommendation for the authors - to read some romances. Even the most sentimental and historically inaccurate novel is better than their work. My recommendation to the Austen's lovers - never, never buy this book! I use my copy as a press because it is thick and hardbacked. It is the only real use of this sequel. Don't buy it ever!
Rating: Summary: okay, but not great Review: I enjoyed desire and duty to a certain point, I have never read a book that is so predictable. I mean, that part of the book where that little scandal is going on, I could easily predict what had happened and what would happen next. The authors also didn't focus enough on Elizabeth and Darcy, I mean am I supposed to beleive that they had absolutly no problems in their marraige. The authors also did not portray Darcy and Elizabeth as anyone who read the book would remember them as; Elizabeth was dull and rarly ever spoke up, and Darcy was too kind to any stranger he met making him look almost as nice as Bingley. If you are looking for a great sequel to Pride and Prejudice, I don't recommend this one.
Rating: Summary: the greatest sequel yet Review: I think that this is the best do to the fact it goes deep yet. I think that the baders are on key about this. i was wondering if someone would bring it on more than any one else.
Rating: Summary: My Disapointment knows no bounds Review: I read The great reviews and was looking forward to this so much but I was so disappointed. I know the authors claimed not to have the syntax etc. but they didn't have the spirit either. The plot was non-existent - I mean poor character development, purely superficial dialogue, I often wondered what was the point of reducing Jane Austen's characters to such simplistic thoughts. All of my favourite Characters - by the end of the book I just hated them all.
Rating: Summary: Unless you want to know how bad it is, Review: give this book a miss. There's a total lack of character development. Everyone, including Mr Darcy and Lizzy, became so dull and dumb. And what irritated me most was the way every single event in P&P was referred to. It feels like the authors are trying TOO hard to justify its own work.
Rating: Summary: I finished this book out of duty, not desire Review: I chose this book based on the favorable reviews it had received, and I have been very disappointed. The plot is SO simplistic. P&P had several enjoyable characters and storylines. This book has only one storyline, that of Georgiana. The authors described her as shy, but I found her rather stupid. The fact that they had to include an appendix that explains everything they added to the book, and why they though Jane Austen would do the same, shows their lack of creativity. The characters that remained from P&P seemed lackluster. Georgiana is said to be afraid of her aunt, Lady Catherine, but Lady Catherine is lacking wit. She has to resort to bribes. Never! Kitty finds religion?! And Mr. Darcy has become quite mellow after marriage. Where was the interesting banter between Mr. Darcy & Elizabeth fortold by Ms. Austen? They simply seemed to gaze at each other in love. In short, if the Boston College professor mentioned in the forward is indeed making this required reading for his classes, I am glad I turned down their admission offer and studied at Inidiana University instead!
Rating: Summary: What a disappointment... Review: Please save your money - this book is dreadful. I have read many of Jane Austen sequels, yet this one is by far the worst. There is simply no plot nor character development. In fact, the book is so decidedly uncomplicated, I wondered if it were written for children - I rejected this explanation, for most children's books are better. What surprises me most, is that anyone found this book worthwhile. Several of the reviews on this page were positive, and the preface to the book includes an endorsement by a college professor. Shocking what people will say for money... Read "The Bar Sinister" instead. That book comes with a desperate amount of typos, which are forgiveable only because the story is so compelling.
Rating: Summary: A sequel worth reading! Review: This sequel to Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" was worth the time to read! It was also a story that could stand on it own, you don't have to have read "Pride and Prejudice" to read and understand it! Which was nice, as although I have read "Pride and Prejudice" and have seen the movies of it, it has been a long time! I thought the story of "Desire and Duty" was well done, it stayed true to the story line and characterizations of "Pride and Prejudice" in it's references! Although there were some mistakes, they were miniscule! I thought it was more than worth it, deffiently a good book! Deffiently worth buying and reading even as a story on it's own!
Rating: Summary: Don't bother Review: Simply stated: this book stinks. Now, I realize I didn't read the whole thing, but, frankly, I could not get past the first chapter. It was that bad. Save your time and money.
Rating: Summary: so awful i can hardly describe my disappointment Review: a perfect example of clunky writing, insipid plot line, and bizarre deviations from the characters of jane austen's "pride and prejudice." save yourself some money. don't buy this book.
