Review: Ch'ien writes literary criticism with the drive of a good novel. Always intelligent, full of zap, at time the book is, appropriately, impious. There is a freedom and spirit to this book that seems to float above and beyond the normally stilted academic formalism, which as a result makes it a suprisingly compelling read. Writing about our authors, in our times, in a voice uniquely her own... if there were more authors like this out there, I think I'd read more lit crit. This book is good.
