Summary: "Alas, Babylon" -- the fateful words that heralded the end
Review: "When the unthinkable nightmare of nuclear holocast ravaged the United States, it was instant death for tens of millions of people; for survivors, it was a nightmare of hunger, sickness, and brutality. Overnight, a thousand years of civilization were stripped away. "But for one small Florida town, Fort Repose, spared against all the odds, the sturggle was just beginning, as men and women of all ages and reaces found the courage to join together and push against the darkness." Those are the words the publisher uses to describe this book. It is, indeed, a powerful novel depicting a scenario that is not so far out there it is unbelievable; rather, the events of the book are / could be very real. I first read this novel a year ago as a required novel in my junior english class. Though I now remember few details, I do remember truly loving this book as I have loved a very limited number of others. Race relations would perhaps be less of an issue today, as would the few degrading remarks made within the novel toward women; however, even now, tensions still run high and it cannot be accurately predicted whether this would still pertain. This is science fiction at its best: it is real and based on fact, but is-- at the same time-- totally and wholly imaginary. The Cuban Missile Crisis and the beginnings of the Vietnam War (particularly with France) were very real problems that had already posed the question of nuclear warfare when this novel was first published in 1959 and in the immediate years following. Even now, with the potentially serious conflict with the Middle East and Hussein's nuclear and/or biological weapons barely averted, this novel is once again very real. One wrong step, then or now, and "Alas, Babylon" becomes no longer science fiction, but rather historical fiction.

As an additional plug, check out my homepage for other information on Pat Frank and other writers and their novels. Please keep in mind, however, that I have been and still am in ! the process of preparing for finals and graduation and my page is as yet incomplete. Hopefully, within the next month, many changes and improvements will come and it will be ten steps closer to what I envision. THANX! :-)

Summary: "Alas, Babylon" will rock your world! (literally)
Review: This is one of the most awesome books I've ever read! In my English class, my teacher assigns one novel a month for the class to read...This is the first one I've read all the way thru! One main reason I was able to get into this book so much is because I live near where the fictional Fort Repose would be. It really hits home. Not only is this novel exciting and chilling, it makes you think. I will definitely be reading it again!

Summary: great to see it back in print!
Review: I read this book over twenty years ago....and was hooked right away. My father had been in Civil Defense, so I had read some of the technical texts available about fallout and the other effects of a nuclear confrontation. Alas Baylon was pretty amazing for it's portrayal of a nuclear war as "survivable", since it was written during the time of M.A.D. thinking. Now with the possibility of limited nuclear strikes by terrorists (scary thought), the scenario of Alas Babylon ring truer than before.

Summary: This is the best, most moving book I have ever read.
Review: When I finished this book I felt such relief at knowing that they (Randy and the whole town) we're going to be allright that I almost cried. When the helicopter lands, that is the climax of the whole story. That's when the reader, or at least that's when I realized the true signifigance of what happened to the U.S., and to that town, and how Fort Repose survived. It's a book that makes me think about how or even if I could survive a nuclear holocaust. This book is so good because it really could happen.

Review: I have read the book lately. I liked and disliked the book. The book took to long to get to the good parts. When it got to the good part around the end of the book I really liked the out-come. Like finding out that they were not contaminated by the pollution. But thought that they would go and leave Fort Repose. I thought it was sweet when Randy and Lib got married. I also live maybe an hour and half from Orlando and Tampa, Fl.

Summary: chillingly accurate...filled with the glory of human spirit
Review: Alas, Babylon remains one of my all-time favorites. As a senior in high school, we studied this novel and while many classmates seemed to find it a bore, I was hooked. I've read it 100 times in the last 20 years, and I will continue to do so...even though my copy is falling apart! The strength and realism of the characters helps us to strongly identify with Pat Frank's underlying message: that nuclear war, if and when it comes, will take many of us by surprise.

Summary: A modern classic of almost universal appeal
Review: I was delighted to find that _Alas, Babylon_ was back in print. I read it back in the 70's when in grade school. And I can see from the other reviews that it's as popular as ever! It was one of the most profoundly affecting novels I have ever read.
