Rating: Summary: Alas,Babylon Review: The book Alas, Babylon is a great book which has alot of suspense.Randy is a young man that has to become responsible for him and a girl named Lib ,when a meatear destorys everthing but those two people. This is a little strange since Randy is fat and lazy. I think that the part that says "The white flashed back into a red ball in the southeast. They all knew what it was. Thus the lights went out and in that moment civilazation in Fort Repose retreated a hundred years. So ended this day."I think this sums up the style and shows that this book is intense.I really enjoyed this book and it always kept me reading.
Rating: Summary: Alas, Babylon Review: Two brothers growing up in Ft. Repose, Florida would often sneak down to the African American congregation to listen to the intense, hell-fire preacher. After every convicting statement he belted to his congregation he would follow them with "Alas, Babylon." Frome then on, Randy a former politician, and Mark a high ranking officer serving in military intelligence would use this phrase as a code. As an intense nuclear threat puts Mark Bragg and his family in trouble Mark sends his family to Ft. Repose, Florida for fear that one of the first targets will be the his intelligence base. Mark sent a telegram prior to the arrival of his family reading, "Urgent you meet me at Base Ops McCoy noon today. Helen and children are flying to Orlando tonight. Alas, Babylon." The story begins to unfold from there as the plot thickens and becomes more detailed and complex. The book is about the unthinkable happening; a nuclear strike and survival after the such a devastating event. A provocative story written by a great author, Pat Frank which is easy to follow and very interesting. His foresight into what could possibly happen is incredible. Even smallest details don't go unattended. Thrilling suspense that will keep the pages turning and your mind thinking. A book for anyone who enjoys an apocolyptic thriller, conspiracy plots, or just a plain old great book.
Rating: Summary: Better than most Review: I was required to read this book during Jr High. It was also the height of the cold war. The book focus is on day to day survival in a Florida enclave cut off from the rest of the world. Many of the ideas they encorporate into their survival would be valid for any major cataclysm. There is also a humanistic storyline that flows well through the book. I think this book is better than "On the Beach", "Trigger Effect", or "Lucifers Hammer". This is the book to judge other survivalist/apocalyptic fiction books by.
Rating: Summary: Creepy; one of the best novels I have ever read! Review: This book is truely a classic. Every page and sentence is direct. There is not fluff in the writing, making it a very easily understood and quick read. Alas, Babylon will make you ask yourself what you would do if the unthinkable should happen. This novel is darker and erie than any movie to date. Read this book!
Rating: Summary: This book should be in schools! Review: I think this book is so good, that it should be in classromms. Kids, and teachers would just love it, becuase of the detail of each sentance.
Rating: Summary: The Best Book I've Ever Read! Review: I had to read this book in high school like many others. I was suprised to find how vivid the descriptions were and how realistic the story was. Many of times I had felt as though I was in the story. Since then, I have read this book numerous times and I recommend this book to men and women of all ages.
Rating: Summary: A Scary Forshadowment Review: The reader finishes this book with a horrible vision of our possible future. Science fiction may be fantasy, but it is also the first step in solving problems, as Bradbury says. Perhaps anti-war novels like this will thwart any destructive nuclear war in the future. Maybe nuclear war is not preventable. However, in any event, this is an under-rated novel by an excellent writer with a great vision. The novel transmits a beautiful theme of human determination and strength. Although deleterious man kind is capable of mass destruction, it is also capable of survival...
Rating: Summary: An EXTRAORDINARY book! Review: I had to read this book in high school and was totally amazed. Since I live in Florida this was actually more like a scary novel because some of the scenes take place in my hometown. I recomend this book to anyone that wants to know what a third world war would be like!
Rating: Summary: This is an awesome book! Review: For a long time every book I read semed to move along at a slow rate, and they all seemed boring. But when i read this book I realized that not all books are the same. I recommend this book to anyone who has time to read it.
Rating: Summary: ...the words that heralded the end Review: I was also assigned this book for school and was actually in shock at how wonderful it turned out to be... it makes you continually ask yourself "what if? what if?".... I really reccommend this book to anyone..
