Summary: Surprisingly intriguing!
Review: it's been a long time since i read this book--junior year, high school, English class--but i remember clearly what the book was about and how i felt about it. it's the kind of book where you automatically make your assumptions that it would be boring or out-dated, but me and many other classmates were surprised by the time we finished it. afterward, i was grateful that my teacher required us to read it. Frank provided a bird's eye view of the mindset of average Americans were in the 1950s with the threats of "World War III"--the baseline of the story. a great book of which, if i had become a teacher, i would also require my class to read! go check it out.

Summary: Alas, Babylon
Review: Many students' first idea of, Alas, Babylon by Pat Frank is probably going to about some story of an old ancient city, but actually it isn't about that! It is about the United States. This story has excitement and has to do with a lot of team work as a town comes together to fight something terrible. A small Florida town is facing a unthinkable nightmare of a nuclear holocaust. The Russians Or some other country has bombed the United States. Some of the cities are okay. But there are some down falls to that. The nuclear radiation is falling down on them. It has contaminated everything that they eat or drink. The nuclear bombs destroyed the cities and all of the federal reserves. In the cities are factories that have been destroyed. While all this is happening, people are buying things to get through the ordeal. People who own the stores are getting rich fast, by the people who have bought everything from toothpaste, coffee, liquor, to gasoline, and oil. By now all the electric is out and the rich people cant buy anything. Money has gone worthless. Many people don't have anything, but some have enough to live. People have to go back to trading things and hunting. In this group of friends, they have some problems. One guy is a drinker and has been trading their chickens for liquor. Some of them need coffee so they trade for that too. People of this town must join together and fight. But they have many obstacles in the way. If you want to know what happens. Read the book!

Summary: Great reading!
Review: This book is a very good insight about what people thought World War III would be like. It is not as unusal as the movie "Dr. Strangelove" but very enjopyable and one of my favorite books.

Summary: compelling, thought provoking
Review: A keeper! This book is one I can read over and over. Each time I find a different viewpoint. Mr. Frank is an excellent writer. I wish he had written more. Kay Fuller--fullerk@coastalnet.com

Summary: This book is timeless
Review: Although it was published in 1959, this story of surviving a nuclear holocaust is timeless. Lots of good thought behind what the characters need to survive, and the clever way they meet those needs. While the bombs then were a lot weaker than now, the story and problems still remain true. A great book for anyone interested in cold war era thought, survival, or just gripping fiction. It's definitely a must read for anyone interested in the sociological effects of a break down in society due to nuclear war.

Summary: What is really amazing....
Review: The true beauty of this book is the time when it was written. Much of the technology described had not even been invented. Pat Frank's descriptions of concept devices is truly amazing. George Lucas has nothing on Pat Frank

Summary: Awsome
Review: This book is entertaining, and impossible to put down. I found myself reading it every chance I got, (even times I shouldn't be reading it), Probably the best book I've ever read in a long time,

Summary: Scary Reality
Review: I had to read this book for an English assignment and it was much more than I expected. This book is not only good but gives extensive detail on man's struggle to survive on practically nothing. It is a scary reality on what could've happened at the time it was written. It scared me. I don't think I would have ever been able to survive as well as these people did. It's a great book anyhow, and you must read it.

Summary: Best book of survival
Review: I first read this book in '72, I have re-read it at least 5 times, passed it on, repurchased and am purchasing again, to read again. Needless to say, the survival methods will be useful forever. Everyone should have this book in their First Aid kit.

Summary: The Best Book I Ever Read!
Review: This book was very interesting because it made me think about what I would do in that kind of situation. Everytime I put it down I felt like an atomic bomb really had hit the U.S. It was great!
