Rating: Summary: Found myself really thinking Review: I read this book because of the Oprah Review and I really was caught up in it. It is so poignant in so many places. The mistakes of youth and how they cascade through life. The sorriness of some individuals and their profound negative influence on others. I was particularly touched by the honesty of it, and how it deals with life as it really happens. Life isn't always tied up with a pretty bow, but there are magnificent triumphs to be found in the personal dignity of individuals. STUNNING
Rating: Summary: A touching story Review: I read this book because of the Oprah show. I am glad that I did. It was a very touching and moving story. I became entangled in the characters' lives. It took me through a range of emotions from sadness to joy. It is a book I highly recommend.
Rating: Summary: Simplistic and monotonous Review: Although a short book, "A Virtuous Woman" kept me occupied for a while mainly because I had to persevere to finish it. I never did finish it as boredom prevented me from doing so. The linguistic style was very colourful although it became rather irritating after a while. This of course may be because I know very little of the culture of the southern United States and thus found it difficult to empathise with the characters. However, I found it depressing and lacking in depth and had to resign myself to the fact that I was never going to finish it.
Rating: Summary: Emotionally powerful and captivating story of love Review: I found this book to be one of those rare gems which made an impression on my soul; the characters were so captivating and the story was so moving that I was unable to put it down after I started it. Gibbons's characters, Jack and Ruby, come to life in this novel by sharing the story of this couple's love and devotion for each other from each of their perspectives. I was moved to tears several times while reading this book, so I suggest you keep the tissues within reach for this one.
Rating: Summary: A Virtuous woman indeed! Review: How many times can we, nay, must we say it? HOORAY for Oprah!!!!! She has done it again. I don't know how she keeps sending us these gems. This book is a volitile masterpiece. It is a known fact that to be a woman is to be virtuous and this book is full of virtuous women and stories of virtue that only women can endure. It will make you laugh at one moment and cry the next. I am not a woman and after reading this book (at my wife's request!) I have a new understanding for the way woman are and the way they view their own virtue. Being a man makes you forget how much women in general have to strive to be virtuous. So I reccomend this book for any man who neglects his wife or girlfriend's virtue due to ignorance or insecurity. It is tell tale story of a woman trying to find her virtue in this world and is wonerfully literated for both women and men alike. Thanks to Oprah for reccomending and thanks to my wife for making me read it!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: THIS BOOK WAS VERY CAPTIVATING. Review: I ENJOYED THIS BOOK SO MUCH THAT I HAVE SHARED IT WITH MY SISTER, A FRIEND, AND AN IN-LAW. A VIRTUOUS WOMAN SHOULD BE READ BY ALL.
Rating: Summary: Kaye Gibbons creates powerful characters in a simple story. Review: Kaye Gibbons has that special gift for creating powerful characters within a simple story framework. Her characters are people whose lives are unfamiliar to me, and yet, when I finish her books, I know these people well. She has touched my heart and soul many times.
Rating: Summary: The first time a book gave me a really good cry... Review: I am a very avid reader and have been since I could read. I have probably read millions of books, most of them very memorable. This book snuck up on me, it did not scream out for attention but instead, it drew me in.
Rating: Summary: Profound sadness of a Life lossed for Pride and stubborness! Review: I found this a wonderfully written and true to life novel of a girl who was growing up in comfortable surroundings but was unhappy and thought she could find better for herself and ended up finding far less. Subjecting herself to brutality both physical and mental for pride never once losing her dignity, respect and decency she managed to hold on and find some kind of balance in the end. So sad how life can be wasted without ever truly living.
Rating: Summary: Sad, but very, very good! Review: Do you know what? Kaye Gibbons has a real way with words. She really does. I liked the way she told the story from both perspectives, it was both honest and moving. What a charmer!
