Rating: Summary: I wrote about the book and my thoughts about it. Review: Dear Friend, The Good Earth is an outstanding book to read. I am not going to tell you about this great book because you should read it and find out what it is about. I liked this book because it was hard to predict what was going to happen in the future. There were a few different thoughts of mine that will happen. The Good Earth has a couple of parts to it that makes me remember it well. My favorite part to this book is when O-lan stands up for herself and has her first child without anyone in the same room as her. This makes her feel good because she is so used to being by herself from the House of Hwang. The Good Earth is really an important book to read because it shows how much the Chinese people have changed. It also teaches what there life was like back then, and then you can compare that to the life of the Americans past. The book shows how much harder their life was than our life was. The Good Earth is an exceptional novel for people to read. If I have a chance I would read the exceptional book again. Your friend, Brad Szatkiewicz
Rating: Summary: The Book "The Good Earth" was a fairly good Book? Review: The book The Good Earth is about a Chinese farmer named Wang Lung. Wang Lung buy's a wife and has many children, the book follows through with his life , and tells about the troubles he goes through. Wang Lung was once a poor farmer , but with good fortune and the help of his wife O-lan , he is able to rent the richest man in towns palace. I thought that this book was fairly good. It could be boring in some parts, because the life of a Chinese farmer in the early 1900's isn't all that exciting. But I would recommend this book to those who are interested in Chinese culture, because it has allot about the cultural traditions of the Chinese. My favorite part of the book was when Wang Lungs son went to the grain market with his father and he found errors in the documents that the grain buyers had made. I thought this book showed how Wang Lung was so proud of his two sons for there great accomplishments in school. This part in the book also shows how Wang Lung wanted better for his sons than he had. I really don't think that this book was all that important to read, although it does have many good points in it. I don't really see any definite need for students to read this book, but it is one that I would recommend to them if they would like to learn about Chinese culture.
Rating: Summary: minimally interesting Review: This book was not as appealing to me as I thought it might be, while it contained good description and thoughtful poetically written material, it lacked writing that would hold a reader's attention. The most well written and most readable section of the book occurs as the Wang family is plagued by starvation and moves to the city so that they might still continue to survive. The Good Earth does contain themes that express the authors views on morality and humanity, and thus I consider it to be an important book, which should be read by all whom wish to do so. While it was not one of my favorite novels, I was able to learn much about the Chinese culture and way of life which is very interesting. The book contains important ideas, but these ideas have been overly expressed in written works of the past, so in general I would suggest that anyone interested in the themes and subjects should read this book.
Rating: Summary: The best novel I have ever read. Review: Conflicting emotions, the price someone pays to become famous and rich and eventual degradation in all respects. But somewhere in the corner of the heart, he remains what he originally is and gets a taste of his own medicine when his sons defy him. Conflict again and remorse. Why at all the money is necessary, if it can't buy peace and happiness? Yes, money can buy bed, but not sleep. It can buy house but not a home, can buy luxury but not comfort... A conflict arises wherever we go, what ever we do and we tend to question ourselves - are we going in the same direction as of Wang Lung? A simple narration and wonderful sequence of events. Quite easy to identify our own sorrounding. These things happen everyday, in our neighborhood, but we fail to notice. A must, for the one who wants to know himself.
Rating: Summary: One of the best books I've read Review: Please, read this book. I think it's wonderful and amazing. I read the other comments and I don't understand that for one people this book can be boring. It'a absurd!
Rating: Summary: wow.... Review: From an 11 year olds view, this book was an interesting story that was wonderfully writen. It starts out slow, them climbs and takes many twists and turns you never suspect. This is a classic story of life. Life: always changing an unpredicting flow of the world
Rating: Summary: TERRIFIC! ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS I'V READ. Review: Wonderfully written. if you have not read this book read it. It is a long book so I wouldn't suggest reading it if you don't like long books. I read this book for book report. I'd like to thank my WONDERFUL teacher, for leading me to read this book.
Rating: Summary: Well, the language was good...but where's the feel? Review: Like many others, I was forced to read this book for school. Since then, I've read it a few more times. My conclusion? Even through Buck may have resided and grown up in China, she never really developed a sense of what it was like. She knew her facts, but not once in this book did I ever feel that she caught the essence, the ebb and flow, of the Chinese culture (yes, I am of Chinese descent, 1st generation immigrant). Mark Salzman did a much better job of capturing the "Chinese feel" in *The Laughing Sutra.* So did Sheryl Wudunn and Nicholas Kristoff in *China Wakes.* Both books are ones I highly recommend. As for *The Good Earth,* write your papers and put it away. I don't even consider it decent American literature.
Rating: Summary: The most fantastic and intense description of shifting China Review: To everyone that has never read this book, i can only tell you something: you are loosing the opportunity of facing some of the most fantastic characters ever created in American Literature. And the warmth of china views, the sun that burns your face while you watch Wang Lung in the fields. It is probable that this bookcan becomes boring but only for those who read it obliged. If not believe me it will change your life.
Rating: Summary: Great Historical Content! Review: This book was really interesting and intriguing. After reading it I feel like i really know Wang Lung and O-Lan and all the other characters. Now I feel like I know a lot more about the history and especially the customs of the average Chinese person. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the Chinese culture.
