Summary: Good Learning Book
Review: The book, The Good Earth, is somewhat about a family's prosperity with farming, through many generations! Throughout the book we are shown a lot about the Chinese culture. The main character, Wang Lung, makes almost all of the decisions throughout the book which effect his life and those around him, (sometimes for the good and sometimes for the bad.) This book gives a good presentation about family, and it's relationship to their prosperity.

I enjoyed The Good Earth, because I learned many things about the Chinese culture that I would have never even guessed. Some of the stuff was very interesting, and gave me an idea about the treatment of other cultures compared to ours. It made me realize how lucky I am to be treated fairly in all aspects, especially as a woman.

My favorite part of the book was when Wang Lung, (at the end,) went back to his land where it all started. He once again treasured the value of the land and realized how important it really is. He was making communication with the land, feeling the soil, taking in everything around him. It was peaceful, and full of serenity. Though he forgot the value of the land through the wealth he gained, in the end the land came out on top. He'd be buried in the land by his friends and family, even connected through the land.

I definitely feel that The Good Earth is an important book to read. It gives us a sense of how other cultures are treated, and in relation how lucky we are. It gives a sense of how important family is, and working together. It also lets us know not to forget what is really important in life, not to forget where your wealth may come from. It's not as important to have luxuries in life, if you forget why and where they came from.

Summary: This novel opened my awareness on China's culture.
Review: The novel The Good Earth is about China's difficulty with women's and children's rights. The book illustrates the hardships that they all endured in China at this time period. The men were allowed to take on more than one wife, other wise known as a concubine. The main character Wang Lung bought his first wife, O-lan and later a concubine named Lotus for his own pleasure. This book is about how these characters reacted to these hardships of starvation and famine, whether it be to steal, beg or work and wait for it to pass. Wang Lung's morals throughout these hard times changed little to none. He thought stealing should never take place, and when he needed food the most he still felt that way and would not allow his children to steal. I enjoyed this novel because it opened up my awareness and interest of the way conditions in China used to be and how they have still not completely improved. It really made me wonder on how the women were so easily obiendient. My favorite part of this book was when O-lan is sick and is going to die. Not that I want her to die, but this is where Wang Lung realizes that he is going to miss her a lot. I think that The Good Earth is an important book to read because it will teach students and who ever else what China was like during this time period. I feel that what happened was unhuman and downright cruel. But it opened up my attention, and I found their culture disturbing yet fascinating.

Summary: It was alright I guess
Review: The book I have read, The Good Earth, tales place in the early 19th century, in a small farming and agricultural town in China. It shows the hardships that took place in these time through a specific character. His passion for his land was greater then any other. His name is Wang Lung, The Farmer. He had lived in a dirt "hut" with his father, ever since he was a child. Many centuries have been raised in this house and have been brought up on the land. One day was his wedding day, and Wang Lung was petrified of going forth to the Great House of Hwang ( where his maid was living and was sold to when a young child). Eventually as time went on the maid, whose name is O-Lan, they had started to have children. W.L. (Wang Lung) had felt that he was very fortunate since his first few children were males. He had then started to feel the riches in his hand and started to buy land and more land, feeling richer by the day.

One time, W.L.'s evil uncle had come over and seemed to put a "spell" on the house, spreading his evil ways around. W.L. was sure that his uncle was evil because shortly after, W.L.'s land, that he had love so greatly, had started to dry up. An enormous drought had fallen over him while a flock of black birds circled over his head( which was considered an evil omen ). O-Lan had then started to bare slaves, or women in which they called them this. The family was eventually forced to the south, driven to beg for money. W.L. was sure that sooner or later he was going to go back to land. As the book progresses it shows how W.L.'s life changes as he goes back to the north. He soon possesses the name "Wang the Great" and others similar. He learns that life is not only just money, but it is also the family, cultures... and what he feels is most important is his land that he wishes that it will never be sold.

The book The Good Earth is for people who really like themes and morality types of things. Some parts for me were alright, but O would say that it was not the best I have ever read. Many parts are very descriptive, which I enjoy when it is a big deal or main part in the book. But other parts drone on about the smallest ideas...which I can't take! Although it isn't a book that I would love to read, it is still an important book to read. It teaches the reader about Chinese culture and the theme of morality.

Summary: A breathtaking look at the culture and life of China.
Review: Rich Bostwick

This book, 0The Good Earth, is about the late 18th, early 19th century life of a Chinese farmer. It is about the life and times of one fictional character, Wang Lung. This book also shows some of the cruel and unusual customs of China about 90 years ago. Some examples of these are: Foot Binding and Tea Houses. It also describes the life and hardships of Chinese men and women from long ago. It also describes the terrible fluxes in China's weather and the devastating effects it has on the land and the people.

I believe that The Good Earth is an excellent book, but only if one is into long, drawn out books. At some parts its very boring and tedious. Nevertheless, at other parts it can be very interesting. For the most part it is an excellent book. I read most of it but sometimes I felt like skipping entire chapters because they got very tedious. I think my favorite part by far is the scene where Wang Lung is pulling the rickshaw for the old man and he gets gypped on his fare. I think that is very funny, especially when the one that gyps one is a wizened old scholar.

The Good Earth is important to read if one would like to find out the hardships and glamors of China 80 years ago. It gives insight on all the moral dilemmas in china and the political unrest caused by it.

Summary: A overview of the book
Review: The book the Good Earth is about a man named Wang Lung, his family, and the land that gave them all life. Wang Lung is a poor farmer who in the beginning of the story is living with his old father and his newly bought slave wife. Through the years they prospered and Wang Lung bought more land from the diminishing House of Hwang. Then famine came and they were starving so they went south to the city.Through good fortune and much hard work they attained money to go back to the land. Then once again they begin to prosper. In the process Wang Lung looses his priorities. He purchases a second wife from a tea house and O-lan his first wife eventually becomes ill and dies. This marks the beginning of the fall of the family of Wang Lung. This all proves how you cannot forget who you are ,what is really important and where you come from. I thought the book was a interesting piece of literature. It taught about the culture and customs that were ordained to this time period in China. It was plainly obvious that the author new what she was writing of. All the details were precise and all descriptions were made quite clear. Wang lung and his family were a key example of a lower class farm family. I didn't have a absolute favorite part, since I enjoyed many sections of this story. Although I found the part where O-lan stood before the old mistress with her son very amusing. I was not a big fan of Cuckoo so I was happy to see O-lan show of her son to all in the great house. I think the Good Earth was a good book to read because not much is taught about the Chinese culture. This book gives a in-depth description about what the culture of the time period was.

Summary: A well written book with a great storyline.
Review: This book was a well written tale about a poor farmer who found his wealth through hard work and crop growing. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading about the hardships one goes through just to try to get respect.THis was a good book but it had a few dull spots here and there. There could have been a bit more exciting parts here and there, but overall I guess I would say that it was a good book and children should read it to know about the poverty from the past and present.

Summary: A good read if you like the Chinese
Review: The Good Earth Review by Chris White

The Good Earth, written by Pearl S. Buck is a novel about a Chinese Farmers rough beginnings and his luxurious lifestyle toward the end of his life. Wang Lung's life started out as a common country folk and stayed that way for quite a while but he got married and his family began to grow into the dynasty of Wang. The book is an average read, not a book that will put you an the edge of your seat but a book that is easy to follow. Basically I did not fully enjoy the book but that is my opinion and you may have your own. My Favorite part in the book is when the people of the village stormed the mansion in the south and took all of their possessions this is where Wang Lung found all of his gold and began his great family. I think this is an important book to read if you want to learn about Chinese customs and beliefs but I don't think you will want to read about Chinese customs on your own. It is a book that is used solely for the purpose of teaching the life and customs of the Chinese.

Summary: Book drags on.Not very good.Too long for a short story.
Review: March 29, 99

The novel The Good Earth, written by Pearl S. Buck, was a story about a Chinese farmer, and what his life was like. He had ups and downs, and toward the end of the book he was having an up. He was the owner of a lot of land. So much land he started to rent some of it out to people. He had many slaves and servants. He even had his very own concubine. He had many children, three sons, which were all that mattered in the end. I did not really care for the book. Although it showed the way people were treated in china at these times, it wasn't of interest to me. Although I did not care for this book, I did have a favorite part. My favorite part in the book was when Wang Lung, and his wife Olan had just brought their first baby boy to show the head master of the House of Hwang. They were leaving the house and strted talking about how great their life was when Olan realized if she said this to the Gods, they might be angry about her bragging. I found it funny when then they started to say how the child was a girl and how their life was not good. I think The Good Earth is an important book to read because it shows how woman were treated in china. We as Americans should look at this and compare it to how we treated African Americans in the 1800's and early 1900's.

Summary: A book review of The Good Earth
Review: The book The Good Earth was about a poor farmer, Wang Lung. The book starts out with Wang Lung taking care of his old father. Wang Lung finally saves enough money to buy a slave, from a great house, for a wife. The wife Wang Lung buys is O-lan, once she is in the house she takes care the old father, prepares the food, and helps in the fields, and bears many children. They go through famine together, and than become rich. Wang Lung's son become scholars. The family goes to live in a great house, and become a great family. I did not really enjoy this book. The book was dragged out too much. First it would go day by day, than all of a sudden it would be 10 years later so it was a little confusing, because you never knew how much time had passed. My favorite part of the book was when Wang Lung goes to the great house to buy O-lan, and the Old Mistress forgets what she is talking about, in the middle of her sentence, because she is smoking opium. The Good Earth is an important book to read if you want to learn about the traditions in China. The book shows a lot of the traditions in China, when girls feet are bound, when men take on more than one wife, and the value of male children over female children.

Summary: An influincing book on Chinese culture.

The Good Earth Review

The novel, The Good Earth, written by Pearl S. Buck, is about a Chinese farmer named Wang Lung and his life. He begins living only with his father, and ends up a wealthy family man with plenty of land to live by. He begins his trek by first becoming ahusband to the young slave O-lan, of the great House of Hwang. O-lan is a great worker and seems to be able to accomplish any task that Wang Lung places upon her. At this time, Wang has a good portion of land, but nothing compared to what he would end up with. After going south to the city to find food, they return with jewels that are the key to their future. It is from these jewels that they are able to buy an oxen and more land, of which they make much fortune.

I believe that the book is a good resource of knowledge, however, I personally did not like it. It really did not have a plot that took any interest to me, and I honestly do not enjoy books on other cultures.

My favorite part of the book was the scene in the south when the people stormed into the rich house and O-lan stole the jewels. This seemed to be the most action packed scene of the whole book.

I think that this is a good book for students to read. It gives great amounts of background information about the chinese culture and customs.
