Summary: This is a summary of The Good Earth
Review: The Good Earth is about a Chinese farmer, that tries to make it through life, and he has many hardships and also many good times. He has many years of bad things happening, and he goes through many years of prosperity. He first gets a wife, and has children, and then he has many hard times, and he goes to the streets to beg for money, but then once again he makes another move back to his home, and he starts to grow in wealth again. Then he stays out his days and he buys a concubine to satisfy his needs, when his wife could not. I did not like the book, because I thought it was very boring and it did not really sound very good. There was nothing in it that made me want to keep reading. It was just a very poorly written book in my opinion. I dont really have a favorite part, but I guess it was when they were on the streets and all of the poor people went on a riot, and they found all of the jewels and then they got to be rich again. That was the only part in the book the was a little exciting. No I dont think that it was important to read because it did not really teach me anything, because I never got into it, because it was so boring. I doubt that I will read it again, I did not learn anything and I would never want to read it again because it was so bad.

Summary: The book was boring.
Review: The Good Earth was about a poor farmer in the late 1800s China who has a certain love for the land. Due to massive famine in the northern section of China the farmer, Wang Lung, his wife, O-lan, and their family are forced to move down south. O-lan is a woman of few words, and she becomes their lifeline in the south. At first the times are rough, but soon Wang Lung becomes wealthy. Wnag Lung becomes wealthy, and morals come into play. Wang Lung starts to treat O-lan like many men do in late 19th century China. He then purchases a concubine, and completely ignores O-lan. O-lan then passes away and he starts to regret how he treated her in her last months of life. He becomes isolated to siting in one chair all day. His love for the land becomes no more. Is wealth good for some individuals? I did not enjoy this book as much as I thought I would. The author did a good job with literary elements, but I did not enjoy the book because it bored me. Maybe it's because I did not know the background of the Chinese culture. I am so used to our culture I am ignorant of other cultures customs. My favorite part of the book is when Wang Lung gives in to the Chinese culture that is devouring him. He went to the tea house and purchases Lotus Flower. All this time he was loyal to O-lan, and I knew sooner or later he would give in and he did. The Good Earth, is an important book to read because it is important for people to understand the old Chinese culture. People need to be educated about things like this so this does not take place again. -Mark Langan

Summary: It was horrible
Review: I have finished reading the book, The Good Earth and I am willing to answer your questions about the book. It starts off as a man named Wang Lung who is a poor peasant farmer lives off the land and basically lives off of it. He goes to the Great House of Hwang and gets a girl and buys land. Thats where everything starts happening. There is this drought and he has to go south with his family. Then he comes back and the book is full of powerful stuff. He prospers off the land against the ravages of nature and the savage attacks of bandit tribes. Me personally, I didn't really like it. It was pretty boring in some parts and it was kind of dumb too. Nothing ever really exciting happened. Maybe you will like it better than I did. I didn't really have a favorite part, but it was when the soldiers came to the Southern city and started taking everyone away. I think this book is an important book to read if you want to research on the Chinese culture and I think it is a good learning book. It is not meant for a thriller book and a book that keeps you reading.

Summary: I thought the book was interesting insome parts but was bori
Review: The Good Earth is a book about China. It shows how woman where treated. The book shows how during the 1900's many farmers and their family's starved. It's also about a young poor farmer how got lucky and how that luck changed his life. I like this book even though some parts are boring. It's a book that I can never tell what's going to happen. I like it because it shows how money changes a persons personality. I think you will enjoy this book and have an understanding what people in China where like and how they lived.

My favorite part in The Good Earth is when O'lan dies and Wang Lung's personality changes and he feels guilty about the things he did to his wife. This part reflects on how money changes people. This is not the only part of the book that is good, you will probably find more interesting parts.

I think it's important for us to read The Good Earth so we get an understanding of China's history. It also helps us get an understanding of their culture think you will find this book important also.

Summary: This book did not interest me at all!
Review: The Good Earth is a book based in the 19th Century China. It is about a farmer named Wang Lung who was a dirt farmer during the time. A farmer who worked hard in the fields. He lives on a farm in China with his father. Then one day he goes off into town to marry a slave. Her name is O-lan. She is not pretty but a very hard worker. She does everything from work in the fields to cook to mending clothes. During the time Chinese men only married so the wives can bare children and the men were allowed to have concubines. Wang Lung and family go through many hardships along the way to a point where they have to beg to stay alive. But the family manages to stay together and pull through the hard things together. Then they become successful and rich and move back to the land. When asking me about this book I have to say I didn't like this book. Not much went on that interested me. I thought it was boring and that it could have been better. My favorite part of the book was when they got back from the south and were living a wealthy life. They were spending money on everything. I don't think it was an important book to read because it doesn't pertain to American Culture. I think it would be a good book for the Chinese people to read because this the hardships they had in the past doesn't repeat itself. I recommend this book to anyone interested in Chinese Culture and History.

Summary: A decent book
Review: The Good Earth, by Pearl S. Buck, makes our culturally ignorant society somewhat aware of what has been going on in China. Without the aid of this book not too many people would have a clue what is going on in China. It is about a typical poor farmer named Wang Lung. He struggles and lives tilling his field and taking care of his elderly father. Then he marries a woman who was formally a slave in the great house of Hwang. Wang now has a woman to work with him, cook, clean, and take care of his father. Wang Lung slowly prospers and finds wealth and buys more land. He is not foolish yet and the riches have not gone to his head. There are many natural disasters which devastate Wang and his family. The class stratification in China is described well. The rich are too rich and the poor are in extreme poverty. During extreme cases like these, the poor were forced to ransack the house of the rich. By these means Wang Lung came to fortune. He grew prosperous and became the most wealthy man in town. He move his now great family into the great house of Hwang where his wife was once a servant. The book tells the story of a peasants rise to greatness. The ride there was an interesting and roller coaster type ride. I enjoyed the book because it was interesting and captured Chinese culture very well for a fictional book. It was a positive story and was all in all an interesting read. I enjoyed it entirely and there were no particularly boring parts. I have never actually hated a book but this is among the top choices. The best part of the book was the book itself. There were no exceptional parts but there were no lagging parts to it. It was solid all the way through. It's an important read because today our society is ignorant of other cultures and we know nothing of foreign lands. This at least gives someone an idea of the aspect of Chinese culture.

Summary: I have read this book and have given my opinion of the book.
Review: I have recently finished reading the book The Good Earth. I am willing to answer any questions that you have regarding the book. The book was about a Chinese farmer named Wang Lung who is poor. One day his father tells him that he has found a wife for him. His wife is a slave from the Great House of Hwang. It tells about his life as a farmer and as a wealthy man. It tells about the love of the land. If you want to know more than you will just have to read it yourself. As to the question concerning wether or not I liked or disliked the book, my answer would have to be that I disliked the book. It didn't have interesting scenes and it was an overall boreing book. I found that I was not looking forward to reading the book, but instead dreading it. The book lacked what some very good novels have much of, interesting story line. I don't have a favorite part in this particular novel. I would have to say that one of the better parts of the book was when Wang Lung marries O-lan. This was my favorite part because they were all happy with their life and in some way's they loved each other. They were nice and courteous to each other. I don't think that this book was important to read. We don't need to read about other people in the world being mistreated by their husbands. We need to worry about our own problems in this country. We could be reading about things that involve our history and culture. Overall I personally feel that we should not read this book.

Sincerly,

Katie Hansen

Summary: It's a great book to look into if you like to read!!
Review: I have just finished reading this book myself in my English class. In the beginning of the book it seemed kind of boring. However, toward the middle it got much better. It is about a young man who begins his adolescent life as a poor farmer living off his own land with his father. Then it goes on as he marries a slave and starts his new life. Their living conditions rise and fall and eventually they become very rich. Now this young man is wealthy and has a large family and lives on very well to the end. I do like this book even though I am not a really big reader-person. It is an emotional book and also a kind of suspenseful one, too. My favorite part was when the young man, which you will learn his name to be, Wang Lung, has his youngest daughter come up to him and say something that had a lot of feeling in it and meant a lot to him, also. I would say that if you think our country has nothing wrong with or even has everything wrong with it, The Good Earth is a "good" book to read to find out about Chinese ways that are just a few examples in the book.

Summary: The Good Earth - fairly good.
Review: Well, I just finished reading The Good Earth, so I can help you. I do not know how much you know about China and its culture, but the book deals with that. It is about a Chinese man who is getting ready to get married. This means he will not need to do as much as he has because women are more like slaves than anything else. They are poor in the beginning but eventually he becomes a very rich man who goes on to buy a concubine,or second wife. He has a few children from his first wife who also grow old and have parts in the story as well. I enjoyed the book and you should too. It helps to better understand the Chinese culture. It is a pretty long book, so take your time with it, and you will get a better understanding of it. I will say my favorite part of the book is how they go from begging and stealing on the streets to having people begging them for money because of their wealth. Then the mans uncle and family move in and start problems, which lead to some pretty funny scenes. The Good Earth is a good book to read because it contains information on Chinese culture. It is a fun book, it has a lot of characters and you could say its a true book since it pertains to real Chinese life.

Summary: A decent book for the culturally inclined
Review: The Good Earth is a book about contrasting lives at the turn of the century. Wang Lung, a farmer who lives with his old father, owns a small plot of land in the Chinese countryside. He farms alone and he loves his work. He cares for his father every day, giving him water when he coughs, and food when he is hungry. Finally, he decides that he must be married. He needs someone to take care of things around the house. The old father goes to the House of Hwang and a servant, O-lan, is chosen to wed Wang Lung. They have a good life together, she a faithful mother and servant, and Wang Lung, a prosperous farmer. They go through starvation. Wang Lung takes another wife. Life goes on - O-lan and the old father die. His sons grow and marry. He moves away from his land and into the run down House of Hwang. He remains there and he never has any peace. His uncle and uncle's wife wither from smoking opium and eventually die. He moved back to the land in his last years and told his sons never to sell the land, for if the did, it would bring the end. This was a decent book. It was educational about China at the turn of the century as well as interesting - things about foot-binding and concubines. Gods and morals were very important to the people. My favorite part of the book was when Wang Lung was a prosperous farmer, living with O-lan and his children, and his father. Life was good and it could be seen that he lived because of the Good Earth. The Good Earth may be an important book to read for some people depending on your interests. It gives good insight to past cultures.
