Summary: It explains how the land is more of a wealth than silver
Review: The book The Good Earth,by Pearl S. Buck, was about the Chinese cultures and the life of the Chinese living in China. It explains how the land is more of a wealth than silver and gold. The main character, Wang Lung, went through his life with the believing that silver and gold could get him everything he wanted, but it was the land that got him fortune, and inside he knew that all along. Wang Lung married a servant from the House Of Hwang, named O-lan, which he never really loved. She did everything she could to please him, but he did not care of the love she gave him. Wang Lung fell in love with a concubine named Lotus. Wang bought Lotus silk clothing, golden rings, and expensive foods. Wang Lung's wife, O-lan, soon died and Wang Lung finally realized how cruel he actually was to her. In the end of the book, Wang Lung dies, and his two evil sons betrayed him by selling Wang's land that he owned all his life. I did not really like this book, because it was extremely different from most books. It was also difficult to read and understand. My favorite part of this book was when Wang Lung went to the House Of Hwang to first see O-lan, who Wang was going to marry. I think the book The Good Earth , is important to read, because it teaches a very important lesson. It teaches that wealth is not the most important thing in life. Wang Lung knew what was most important, which was his land. I recommend this book to more sophisticated people who might understand it better than someone who is in high school.

Summary: this is a bad book.
Review: The Good Earth

The good EArth was about a man named Wang Lung who started out as a poor and happy farmer to a man who became rich and greedy lord. He was married to a wife that took care of him and his family. Her name was o-lan. She had two boys and life was good. Then o-lan had a girl and the whole family had bad misfortune and were forced to move south. O-lan stole some jewels from rich man's house. Wang lung stole lots of gold from a wealthy fat man. Then they moved back home, bought more land, built additions to his house, and hired workers to farm his field. But as the years past things got more and more miserable. I thought the book was kind of boring because there wasn't that much action in it. The good earth told us about how hard a poor man's life was in 19th century china. It was too much like a life story. My favorite part was when Wang lung took the gold from the rich fat man. I thought this was ironic because the poor man is usually begging to the rich man but this was reversed. I don't think the good earth was an important book to read unless you are doing a report on 19th century.

Summary: B-O-R-I-N-G!!
Review: I have recently read the book The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck. I had to read it for English class, and all I really have to say is that I didn't like it at all. It was well written and researched, I'll agree with that, but the story itself- I just didn't like. It didn't hold my attention at all. It was about a Chinese farmer named Wang Lung who loved his land and worked for every piece of silver he had. He soon received a wife, and in time, she had a total of 3 sons, and 3 daughters. But she killed the second daughter when she was born, because of a famine, and they had no food to feed their children. The book depicts the good and bad times any person goes through- except for the fact that this man was extremely sexist and pig-headed. It's appalling how disgusting the main character is. The book shortly talks about the Ancient "art" of foot-binding. But not enough to help somebody learn about it if they are uneducated in Chinese rituals. It also talked about concubines and prostitutes. The only thing I don't understand is WHY this book was supposed to be "so great", and "so controversial"! I thought that it was boring, and a tedious thing to read. I wouldn't have read it if I didn't have to read it for English. Actually, I had a favorite part-the part when it ended! I don't recommend reading this book. It's pretty much just 260 pages of one boring thing after another. It's all well and good if you LIKE long, boring books- but, I, personally, don't recommend it.

Summary: A good review on teh insight it gave me
Review: The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck is the life story of a Chinese man back in the late 1800's. It gives you insight into the way the chines lived, and the rise and fall of the rich. The main character Wang Lung gets a new wife that brings him prosperity. Then Wang Lung becomes poor, and he moves to the south. In the south his wife O-lan finds a bag of jewels that makes him rich. He becomes so rich that he buy a huge palace called the House of Hwang. When Wang Lung is old he is miserable because he is so rich and all of his sons are after his money and greed has corrupted his life. I enjoyed this book because it gave insight into another culture in China. I would never think that people on the other side of the world back then could have been so different. You never think of how other culture are until you take a look into then. My favorite part of the book was when Wang Lung was taking O-lan home for the first time. He was so considerate of her. He carried her box, and bought her fresh peaches. He was happy and he tried hard to make a good impression to her. Wang Lung was happy because he was so pleased with her and the services she gave to her. I think that this is an important book to read. I feel that this is an effective way to look into another culture. Some people are so limited to there ways of thinking. The more you read about other people and there cultures the wiser and more educated you will become. I am glad that I read this and have the insight into there culture. Laurel Verehy

Summary: NOT COOL!
Review: Lindsay Yodice The book The Good Earth is about a farmer Wang Lung. He goes through a life that has good times and bad times. It ranges from being rich to being poor and it goes from droughts to floods. Much occurs in this book like when he gets a wife, sons, and daughters. Later in the book he buys a concubine which stirs up just the being of an unpeaceful house. He moves into a rich house inside the gates of town and when he is away from the land that is when all the troubles seem to occur. Since he is rich he buys people to work on his land and that brings the troubles in the household. His sons are not at peace and he has affairs with a young girl when he is an old man almost at the death stage of his life. He then realizes that the land is the best peacemaker ever and that his life was generated there and that is where he will die. He does die there after hearing his sons speak of splitting and selling the land. Wang obviously is not happy with this and therefore he dies an unhappy man. I did not really prefer reading this book. It was very dull at times and it was not my type of literature that I enjoy reading. Although I am not the reading type of person. It drags on things and doesn't exactly catch my attention that enables me to read on and on. It did however give me information about the culture of China. My favorite part was when Olan and Wang have their first child. I do not think this book is important to read because there are other books that can tell about the culture of China and actually be enjoyable.

Summary: I hate Wang Lung
Review: The book The Good Earth is about a poor farmer named Wang Lung, he is a very hard working man but hard times come and he is forced to make the decision to sell his land in order to move his family to the south so that the would not starve, in the south good times come the get a bag of jewels and they decide to move back to the north and buy their land back. In the north they have an abundance of money and openly flaunt it. The are many deep and moving scenes and the occasional laugh. I did not like the book, but you have to understand that is my personal opinion. I know many people who enjoyed this book a lot and would recommend it. I think that you should read it because it is a good book and you might like it. My favorite part of this book is when Wang Lung gets a concubine and O-lan (his wife) gets very upset. She refuses to do anything that would be helpful to his concubine Lotus. I think that it is a good book to red because it shows one mans struggle from rags to riches and how important it is not to give up. Other important things about this book are that it teaches lessons to the reader. The lessons that it teaches include greed, laziness, and how people don't know what they got till its gone.

Summary: A wonderful book for all minds and good souls!
Review: The novel, The Good Earth is a novel written by Pearl S. Buck. The book set in the time of turn of the century China, is about the fifty year fraction of the life span of the main character, Wang Lung, and how his life and his ever-growing family drastically changes through out the years. Wang Lung starts off as a poor farmer and gradually evolves into a rich dynasty with money coming from every angle. This wonderful book shows irony in a way I thought not possible, how money can change a person, and how sometimes the ". . .rich become too rich." My personal favorite part of the novel is when Wang Lung tricks his aunt and uncle into becoming opium addicts. I also enjoyed some of the blunt humor the author produces in the quotations of the characters. The Good Earth is a definite must for students in the high school level to read because it shows the destruction of the female sex in great detail. Women in the novel are known for being almost worthless objects. Its almost sickening to read the hardships of Chinese women and how they had no choice but to live with it. Female pupils, no matter how they try not to, will eventually face similar situations, maybe not as drastic, but still degrading. Ironically, The Good Earth makes women proud to be women and may cause men to be a little embarrassed as they read how their past "brothers" treated the opposite sex. The novel is full of material, not just for the mind, but also for the soul.

Summary: This book was so dull!
Review: The book The Good Earth is about the rise and fall of a chinese mans life. It tells a lot about the culture. The book is about a young man's life and how he first leaves Northern China because of a tragic famine. He lives in the south with his family and his wife. He has three sons and two daughters. Later, Wang and his family return to the North. He becomes rich. He takes a concubine and her slave to live with him and neglects his first wife. His first wife and his father die. They later move into The Great House Of Hwang which Wang has always dreamed of. He meets a young slave Pear Blossem who he falls in love with. When Wang becomes very old, he tells his sons never to sell the land, however they are going to. I thought this book was rather boring at times and interesting at others. They dragged some things out for exremely long times such as talking about a field for like four pages! Other parts were very good and sad. When O'lan, the first wife died, it was very tragic. My favorite part of the book is when Wang moves into the house of Hwang and his sons are older and the cousin comes back. Things become interesting then. The Good Earth is a very good book to read if you want to know how a common man's life was in past china. It tells the way a man struggled and how chinese culture is so different than american culture.

Summary: It was an interesting, lesson-learning book.
Review: The Good Earth is basically about the rise and fall of Wang Lung, and the hardships he and all others alike faced in those times and even today. He begins out just like any other dirt poor farmer of those times, just trying to get by. He marries a slave girl from the Great House of Hwang. Things are going very well, and he buys a piece of land from the Great House. A drought occurs, and he is forced ot move down to the south and beg for money to buy food for his family. He is forced to adapt and learn to live with his current conditions. As towspeople storm the rich houses in the south, Wang Lung find money. As he returns home he has to rebuild everything and do much work. He learns to live again, and becomes prosperous and wealthy. His sons and daughters are growing up quite well, yet he sends none of them out to the land, instead he sends his first two sons to school. Wang Lung's uncle, and his uncle's family moves in, he adds a concubine and a concubine's servant, and Ching. Eventually, he moves to The Great House of Hwang, and there lives many servants, and grandchildren. I enjoyed this book, although boring at times. It showed great examples of how wealth and prosperity can change a man's life, and make it unhappy. It shows morals, values, and change. My favorite part was when Wang Lung returns to the land every time he is sick or angry, and he is healed. It just shows how money cannot buy true happiness. I think the Good Earth is important to read, but it has many underlying and hidden meanings that I think more mature and older students can understand. Also, it shouldn't be assigned, people should want to read it, not forced to. It would be more enjoyable and would mean more if it was not forced upon people.

Summary: Emotional and some what interesting.
Review: I feel, as a student, this book was not that bad. It had a pretty interesting plot, and there were so many things that you did not know were coming. For example, when O-lan died. Who knew that was coming? Or even when they moved into the House of Hwang. Even though alot of kids may not like it, I did!
