Summary: Interesting novel
Review: The Good Earth, a novel, was very intersting to me. Although it was slow in some parts, it also had meaning to it. As it took place in the 19th century, I tried to visualize what it could have looked like. Throughout the book, I could find figurative language such as irony and symbolism. Irony would have been where Wang Lung saw the flock of crows fly overhead and knew it was an "evil omen". Symbolism took place when the people painted or wore red for new beginnings or great luck. This book is great to read whenever you would like to learn about old China.

Summary: Very interesting read.
Review: Instead of writing a whole outline of the book, The Good Earth (like everyone else seemed to do), maybe I'll just voice my opinion? I thought it was a wonderful book, and though it was very long, I never got bored with it. If you can really get into what you're reading and you can visualize what's happening you should have no trouble with boredom. Personally, I have little interest in the Chinese culture, but I found the book fascinating none the less. And you don't have to be an adult to enjoy it either. If you're mature enough to read it and not mind that the book is realistic and not pure fantasy, then you might like it. I'm only twelve and I enjoyed (and understood!) the book. Of course this is only my opinion on the subject. Everyone to their own, right?

Summary: The ONLY work by Buck worth Reading
Review: Pearl S. Buck writes a true to the heart tale of family and money, greediness, and poverty, well written, timeless, powerful. Everyone who wants a family should try this, it's a touching and sweet tale of what children can do.

Summary: Depressing Story of Family Life
Review: I just love depressing stories, not many authors out there want to take that gamble because they're afraid people won't like it and will hate the book overall (as what happened here). I on the otherhand knows a good book when I see one, this is a wonderful tale of life in China.

I highly recommend this to people who chose to read it themselves, not assigned for classes.

Summary: Experience torture--- Buy this book!!!
Review: Actually I would rate it NO stars. Staring at a blank page would have been more interesting than reading this book. I found this book near the cash register at my local bookstore; it was obviously misplaced on its way to the trash can. As my eyes brushed over the text on each page, I was experiencing torture. You too can experience this torture if you buy this book and read it! Your money would be put to better use in the toilet. I only recommend this book to the reader that wants to waste time, wants to sleep, or has a wish for pain.

Summary: A modern classic that superbly depicts Chinese Culture
Review: The Good Earth is an excellent piece of literature that is both well written, and culturally informative. This novel educates the reader as to the customs and procedures of Chinese life during the time period in which the book was written. Chinese culture, religion, and philosophy are all expressed in in some form or another in this novel. I particularly enjoyed the vivid, yet concise way which Parl Buck wrote this novel, for I found that I could read through it relatively quickly. Perhaps one of the best qualities of this novel is its irony, expressed at the conclusion in which the main character, Wang Lung realizes a cylce in his life that has taken full turn, and concluded with his death and the possible emergence of a new Lord in the ranks of a poor farmer who groveled before him, much like he had done in the presence of the former Lord.

Summary: A book with a bitter ending
Review: The book drags on and on and really about nothing! Wang-Lung starts off poor and O-lan the faithful wife stays by his side till her end. It goes on to show how working hard gained him more land and power. She could have excluded a few detail (or chapters). And the fact that he's bound to loose everything anyways when he dies is upsetting and you wonder why you even picked up the book. The section in the book where a 70 year old sleeping with a young girl is disgusting! Never in my life do I want to read something like that again.

Summary: interesting and heart warming
Review: The Good Earth is a heart wrenching tale of young Wang Lung and his struggles to get by in a changing China. This book offers great insight into life in a different culture.

Summary: The Greed of Man
Review: The Good Earth is about the greed of man. It is well illustrated inthis beautifully written novel. It takes place in the 19th century in China. It demonstrates how religious and superstitious the Chinese were. I thought this was a great novel. It showed that children do as their parents do, not as their parents say. Wang-Lung, the main character, was greedy all of his life. He passes this trait on to his two sons. Trying to make a better life for his sons than he had, he also shows that money truly is the root of all evil. His sons betray him while lying on his death bed, they say they're going to sell the land, the land which their father worked for all of his life. The land that the whole family was built from. They are selling the last of his life. My favorite part was in when O-lan asks to keep two jewels, and Wang-Lung let her. I think that this showed that Wang-Lung did love her. No matter what she looked like I think he had feelings for her as a wife not just a child barer. I thought this was very important to read, it shows how eaisily people can be influenced by money and greed.
