Summary: AMAZING
Review: For some reason, this book was both extremely entertaining and interesting to me. I couldn't put it down, and finished it in one sitting. The writing, plot, and characters are all outstanding and thought-provoking. After completing it, I found myself looking for others who have read it, for someone to share it with. I recommend this book to any and every person.

Summary: Completely Unspectacular, But Fun
Review: "Election" was enjoyable; I'm not surprised it will soon be yet another watchable, cute teen movie. The characters were all similar in that they didn't have much depth, (except for Tammy, the most interesting). However, the writing wasn't especially interesting- anyone who could read the book could probably also write it. Oh, and b/c you'll probably finish it in a couple hours, you might not want to spend 10 dollars on it...try the library-just a tip!

Summary: It's got my vote
Review: Whatever that tiny little niche is that an author must find to thrill me with his/her words, Tom Perrotta found it with Election. I bought the book on a whim and I couldn't have found it more entertaining and insightful. Mr. Perrotta mixes humor, angst, lust, and the complex responsibilities of humanity into a perfect medley. He is brilliantly tuned in to his characters and their relationships. Anyone who's ever gone to school will appreciate this book. I loved it!

Summary: THIS WAS A GREAT STORY OF HIGH SCHOOL TROUBLES
Review: AT FIRST THIS BOOK WAS DULL. YES, DULL. BUT, WITHIN THE FIRST POINT OF VIEW (YOU'LL HAVE TO READ THE BOOK TO REALIZE WHAT THIS MEANS), IT IS VERY INTRUGING. IT TELLS ABOUT HIGH SCHOOL TRAUMAS, BOTH RELATING TO ADULTS AND KIDS. IT WAS FUNNY IN SOME ASPECTS, AND IN SOME IT WAS SAD. IT SOME, IT WAS EVEN CONFUSING, AND TWISTED. BUT IN THE END, YOU FIND OUT WHAT IS REALLY GOING ON IN THE LIVES OF THESE TRIUBLED TEENS AND ADULTS, AND FEEL COMPASSION TWORDS THEM.

Summary: A mildly interesting book made mostly of fluff
Review: I have to say that dissapointed with Election. I am a Junior in high school now and the characters just didn't ring true with me. The plot was mildly interesting with a few plot twists here and there, but overall it seemed like just a glorified teenage soap opera to me. The one excelent aspect of the book was the several different points of view by each character, which was superbly done. Overall, however, I expected more from a Harvard grad!

Summary: Interesting
Review: Election is a quick read (200 pages), the first half of which is a soap opera where it seems like every single character is involved in a sex scandal of some sort. The second half of the story focuses on the high school election and resolving the character's lives to some degree(rarely in a forgiving manor). At the end I was left depressed, having little sympathy for any of the characters, with the possible exception of Tammy, a sad, direction-less supporting character.

I wasn't particularly impressed with the story, but the one thing that I did really enjoy throughout the book was the unique shifting narrator, a technique I would definitely like to see other authors try. It's a surprisingly fluid effect and makes what I would otherwise find a rather dull novel fairly enjoyable, and if not gripping, at least interesting.

Note: At the time of this review (Nov 98), the novel is being made into a movie. I don't predict a box-office smash, but I think the dynamic narrator should translate easily to film, where the camera is always changing perspective.

Summary: An extremely enjoyable book that brings back many memories!
Review: Having gone to high school with Tom makes reading his work all the more special for me, since many of his characters remind me of actual people from that period of my life. Apart from the obvious joy that this type of nostalgia brings, I enjoy his stories and novels for their sharp characterizations and many poignant (but never saccharine) moments. Tom - keep up the fantastic work!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: A Classic
Review: There's so much to like about this book. The story was great, the characters were great, the narration was great. After reading his previous two books and reading other reviews for Election, I came in with high expectations. I was not let down.

Summary: Perrotta does it again...
Review: Tom Perrotta has continued his mastery with Election. The amazing thing about his novels (and collection of short stories)is that the reader is left with a sense that the characters exist outside the confines of the work, e.g., at the end of The Wishbones, you can easily imagine Dave, Glen, and Alan forming a band. The same is true of Election. Perrotta invents wonderful characters and portrays them in a way that makes them familiar. My only criticism of this book is that I had to read it too quickly. By the way, I have met Tom Perrotta, have told him how much I like his work, and found him to be a great guy...
