Rating: Summary: Simply the best book I have ever read. Review: The caracters are real. The story superb. Mr. Demille has created a masterpiece.
Rating: Summary: The Gold Coast Review: Although the book was not my typical reading material, I could not put it down. I grew up in this part of Long Island and found the story to be true to life. Demille did a wonderful job with all the fact and persons he portrayed. I can't wait to reread it over and over again. What a wonderful book. Made me very homesick for my Long Island roots.
Rating: Summary: Artful Rendering Review: Let's say you're like me and have trouble mustering up a lot of identification with wealthy New Yorkers living in big houses and traveling in large, expensive cars to and from their all-too-exclusive country and yacht clubs; that is, of course when they're not riding horses across their lavish estates. Let's also say that given all the readables nowadays a little over six hundred pages represents a considerable investment of reader time. Surprise! Nelson DeMille's THE GOLD COAST is worth it. The story is told by reluctant lawyer John Sutter in the first person. Eventhough John is arguably the most intelligent of the principal characters I found myself wondering which of his pronouncements were reality-based and which were perhaps not so true-to-fact imaginings. The mystery of this kept kicking me on, and okay I admit it, I'm a sucker for interesting, well-articulated relationships particularly when they involve a not-to-be-taken-for-granted green-eyed redhead. This is not the typical (or formula) good guy versus bad guy duel. The characters are sophisticated, multifaceted, and deep who interact in ways that are not openly hostile, but hostility is there just the same. DeMille is expert at logging the significant and insignificant relating to the deterioration of human relationships. It is the art of this rendering as well as the surprise ending that make this novel highly recomended.
Rating: Summary: Hilarious Review: This was the first book of his I ever read and I have been a fan ever since. I can sum up the booki in one word-- HILARIOUS. Mr. DeMille is quite a witty man and it shows through his writing.
Rating: Summary: The Gold Coast Review: This book is very un-Demille in that the plot is not always a tense presure cooker. But the character development is incredible. Like it or not, I cared the main character John Sutter. Also, the mob boss was charming and you can see why he was so powerful. The conclusion is one of the more realistic "everybody loses" endings that you will read. It is compelling.
Rating: Summary: A Great Book! Review: This is one of Demille's best, and too many the best. The story of a Long Island WASP who gets a Mafia Godfather as a new neighbor. Not only is it a great Mafia type story for fans of the Godfather or the Sopranos. But its more than that. Its a great look at Long Island. Great characters, great action, great story, and great sex. This is a great book. If you have read Nelson Demille and liked any of his other books, you must read this one. Nelson Demille, in my opinion, is the best novelist out there. This is a perfect example of why.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic, but i have a question Review: Easily one of the best books i have ever read. It has a great plot, interesting and deep characters, and a fantastic setting. With great wit and social commentary to boot. BUT did DeMille really right this? It is so out of character with all of his other novels, and why hasnt he written more like it? I smell a ghost write.
Rating: Summary: Demille's best by far Review: I've read at least five or six of Demille's novels, but this one is by far my favorite. The characters are well-developed and interesting, and the plot moves along very quickly. This is also the only Demille book I can think of that's really funny, particularly in terms of the dialogue. The interaction between the WASP attorney and the Mob boss is terrific, and I'm surprised that no one has made a film out of this one yet. It's a fast read too (I think I finished it in one weekend)and I highly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: DeMille's Best.... Review: This is the best of all of DeMille's books. John Sutter's sarcasm and dry wit leave me laughing out loud every time I read the book. Nelson DeMille, please write a sequel!
Rating: Summary: One of the best ever... Review: This is Nelson DeMille's best book, and one of my favorite books of all time. It succeeds for many different reasons, not the least of which is that it is absolutely hilarious.
