Summary: Terrible
Review: This book is really terrible my 4 years old sister can write that book. I can write better

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: You will laugh out loud while reading this one!
Review: I have never laughed out loud while reading a book--until this one. I have since passed it to my husband (whom I heard laughing out loud) and my brother (ditto). The clash of the Italians (which is my heritage) and the Waspy LongOiland couple is priceless. This is one to be read over and over and over. ENJOY!

Summary: The Great Gatsby meets the Mafia
Review: This book would easily be 5 stars except that it is depressing. Ignoring the overall depressing nature of the book, there were many instances of humor throughout. I love Nelson's sense of humor, and although I never laugh when reading, I found myself laughing throughout this book. I was intrigued by the descriptions of the Gold Coast and its inhabitants. The look at the misguided actions of the IRS and DA were particularly appreciated.

Summary: Demille's version of the great american novel
Review: Demille is always great. What fascinates me most about him is his diversity. He can write everything from simple thrillers to multi-level literature. Gold Coast is the latter. I read it over the summer and loved every page of it. It veriably oozes America. Two different people, both living out the "American Dream" in their own way (neither of them quite satisfied with it). What happens when their paths cross? Read the book and find out.

Summary: Coast is the Most!
Review: This is a book you will appreciate more after time. I was dissapointed and disturbed by the conclusion of the book. I felt like throwing the book across the room. The emotions that it employs is what you'll never forget, even if it does disturb you. I can say that it was hilarious at times too. A classic that I will read again some day.

Summary: Provocative Reading!
Review: This was my third DeMille novel. It was very different from Plum Island and the Lion's Game. It does not have the suspense of those two books. Yet this book does not leave you. The book is long but the details are necessary to develop the characters. It is quite funny and as other reviewers have indicated I found myself laughing out loud as I read this book. (So much so that my son asked me not to bring the book to basketball practice because I made too much noise!) Great overall read but only for the patient.

Summary: Nelson's Best
Review: This is Nelson DeMille's best work. A Modern day Great Gatbsy mixed with the Mob. A very entertaining departure for him. This book is nothing like any of his other books. It is not a 'thriller' but a more involved story. Altough some of the story is weak, I seriously doubt a Mob boss would pick John Sutter to represent him it still keeps your attention. If you like DeMille and don't like this book try General's Daughter or Plum Island.

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: A great resource for one-liners.
Review: Portions of this book were very enjoyable because of the imaginative writing style of Mr. Demille. But the characters were not imaginative and the story not credible. So, overall, the book fell flat for me.

Summary: Five stars? One star? I'll split the difference!
Review: Having read the book over my summer vacation, and then reading these reviews, I can agree with those who gave this book one star and also (to a lesser extent) with those who gave the book five stars. It certainly isn't like DeMille's other books. If this is the only DeMille book you've read and you didn't like it, well then try "Plum Island".

It's interesting that most of the reviewers (many whom have read other DeMille books) either disliked this book intensely or loved it. I can see it both ways (somewhat). It was rather interesting, let's say. I wanted my wife to read it, so I could "discuss it" with her. Did Susan or didn't she? What will John do next? Great literature? Compared to Gatsby? I doubt it.

The "tale" of the book certainly kept me interested. Why would John and Susan Sutter start behaving in this way? Beats me. About the only thing I can think of is that "evil" can appear attractive to some persons and drag you into it's lair.

But so much of the story is unconvincing. "Honor Thy Father" by Gay Talese, or Puzo's "The Godfather" are much better portrayals about the Mafia. It is extremely unrealistic that a Mafia Don would all of a sudden want a Tax Attorney with NO trial experience to represent him in Federal Criminal Court. It is very unrealistic that a Wall Street Tax attorney would be so helpless and cower at an IRS assessment. Hasn't he ever heard of an appeal? I would NOT want John Sutter as my attorney the way he is portrayed as a lawyer, and being a lawyer, I ought to know. What a wimp! He hardly ever works, hardly ever communicates with his wife (except when he/she is devising one of their sexual fantasies), and certainly seems to let others, including his wife, rule every aspect of his life.

So I'll give the book three stars, if only because it was an easy vacation read that was at least "interesting". But a believable story or accurate portrayal of the Mafia or life as a lawyer? Don't think so.

Summary: The Gold Coast
Review: A 400 page story (such as it was) stretched into 700 pages of inane prattle. The "hero" acted throughout like an immature reverse snob who never achieved adulthood. One expects far better from Demille. Unless you are into sarcasm for sarcasm's sake this tome is a waste of time.
