Summary: A haunting story
Review: "When Gregor Samsa got up in the morning, he found himself transformed into a gigantic insect..." begins Kafka's famous Metamorphosis. I believe this is the most famous first opening sentence in twentieth century literature. In the whole story, Kafka took no interest in explaning why Gregor was transformed into a gigantic insect. Instead, there are detail descriptions of the change of his life, his circumstances and relationship between him and the external world after his transformation: how he regressed into an insectile existence and how he alienated himself from his family. His sister brought food scrapes on a piece of newspaper, he was bound in his room and his father even threw apples at him after he ventured out of his room resulting in his fatal injury. Can anyone criticize Gregor's family of the way they treat him? Whether it is right or not,I believe one of the main themes in the story is when you become a gigantic insect, you do behave like a gigantic insect and the world will treat you as a gigantic insect. The full horror of this story sinks in when nearly everyone can be transformed into a gigantic insect at anytime; like phyical and mental illnesses, accidents and injuries, degenerative and terminal illnesses, etc. There will be no explanation given no matter how unfair this transformation is done to an individual person. Finally, Gregor believed that it was reasonable for him to die for the best interest of his family. I felt so sad after I finished the book. Is everyone undergoing a process of metamorphosis either slowly or quickly?

Summary: .
Review: One of the most accessible works ever written by Kafka, and certainly a good place to start if you haven't read anything by him before. I can easily cite this as the book that initially stimulated my interest in literature. As with anything, it isn't for everyone, but personally I found it magical, rewarding, and utterly unique.

Summary: see a new dimension to the story
Review: The book was great!! I loved how the characters seemed to "metamorphosize" into different characters by the end of the story. It's not only the story of Gregor's metamorphosis but a story of his family's metamorphosis as well. This book will keep you thinking and allows for extremely different views on Gregor's plight in the novel.

Summary: Not bad, not great
Review: Metamorphoses isn't one of the worst books I have read, but it certainly isn't one of the best books I read either. I found the psychological aspects and how it related to his life more interesting than the plot itself. I recomend reading a little bit about Kafka's life so that you can understand the psychological aspects and how Kafka uses Gregor to show some of his own feelings.

Summary: What's bugging Gregor?
Review: Gregor Samsa awakens one morning to find himself transformed in a gigantic insect. Critics are at odds as to the type of insect, but to pursue the debate is to miss the point. Gregor simply feels like a vermin, any kind of vermin, primed and ready for inevitable extinction in the capitalist system. After all, only the day before, Gregor was a travelling salesman.

Kafka is one of the world's greatest writers with an imagination born of suffering and despair.

This gem is for anyone who now and then wants to tell the world to bug off.

Bring your knife and fork!

Summary: I'd like to say Kafka's a genious but I can't . . .
Review: When my AP English teacher assigned us to read Metamorphosis, I was intrigued and looking forward to it. Unfortunatly, within the first ten pages I was nauseated and disgusted. The plot, while it has obvious connections to Kafka's life, is not in any way an enjoyable story. The Metamorphosis is an odd, stupid, pointless novella that is very much a waste of time.

Summary: Wonderful
Review: A classic is a piece of literature that stands the test of time. Kakfa's The Metamorphosis is truly a classic. Not only does Kakfa capture the challenges of being accepted due to differences in the early 20th century, but he captures the challenges of being accepted in all centuries past all centuries yet to come. There is nothing better than a book which provokes thought, and The Metamorphosis does just that.
