Rating: ![3 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-3-0.gif) Summary: Brilliant fiction - Hopeless clichées Review: No doubt can be raised that Wilbur Smith is a more than competent writer. The action-packed pages rip away, and the book is really engrossing. That said, Wilbur Smith is also a master of the cliché, to such a degree that some passages in the book are almost hilarious. We've got the Indy-clone antagonist, the beautiful and exotic love interest, the faithful sidekick, the cold-hearted russian killer, the cynical and powermongering Texan, and so on and so forth. Smith's originality is strongest in the actual story, his characters are simply hopelessly predictable flat characters. But I guess this is also a trademark of the génre, and what Wilbur does, he does very well.Bottom Line : If you are looking for an intense action-packed adventure, this book is a great classic. If you're looking for any kind of insight into the human mind, relations between people, historical facts and so on, don't bother.

There's romance, action, and lots of people die...especially the bad guys (very satisfying that is too). The best part, to this reader's mind, was the description of ancient engineering, and the idea that there are still treasures out there waiting to be discovered. The two protagonists, Royan and Nicholas, are complicated and empathetic, and the surrounding characters, both good and bad, stay in your mind long after the novel is over. A sequel of sorts to "River God", this is a great page turner and will entertain almost any reader.

Review: I was shopping at a garage sale when I say a battered copy of a book called the "Seventh Scroll". It looked a bit interesting so I decided to buy it. (It was only $0.50 anyway.) I took it home and began reading it. I was ingrossed. I read it in less than a week. (I had full time school and part time work at the time. I could only read at night.) I would go to bed at 8:00 and stay up and read till midnight to 3:00. This book isn't for the weak of stomach. Wilbur A. Smith has a way of making every death into a wonderfully grousome tale. He deffinatly used his imagination on this. I finished reading it and recommended it to my mother who also greatly enjoyed it. Through out the whole book there was mention to another book called "River God". But I wasn't sure if it was a real book or a made up book for the purpose of the story. It turns out that it was the first book. I had read and understood the whole book "Seventh Scroll" without even reading "River God". (I have bought a copy of "River God" and can't wait to start reading it.) Even if you don't want to read "River God" you can really get into this book. Read it!
Rating: ![3 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-3-0.gif) Summary: Amon Raw Review: River God was that rarest of breeds, the historical novel almost completely unconnected to history. Not even the characters' names were Egyptian. But I'll hand Wilbur Smith this: he knows how to punish an evildoer. Larger than life villains meet larger than life fates. However we may feel about capital punishment, it is hard not to cheer when justice comes for the evil. Now, fast forward a few thousand years, give or take, and we pick up the story again; sort of. This novel, too, is delightfully unhinged, utterly unbelievable, and just as hard to put down. We're ashamed, but we keep reading anyway, if only to see how the corrupt neo-Nazi billionaire collector of antiquities gets served his reward. On the way, we tour battered Ethiopia, grub through caves, dodge carnivorous eels invented for our entertainment, and find a little love. Yes, readers, Seventh Scroll is a video game without the sound effects, and substitutes the imagination for CGI magic. I loathe myself, but I loved it. Dive in, but watch out for eels and, for heaven's sake, don't drink the water.
Rating: ![3 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-3-0.gif) Summary: Ammon Raw Review: Well. This book flows like the Nile at flood (literally) from its predecessor, River God. The original was a heady, thoroughly delightful waste of time; I read books like this about once a year as a sort of literary Dristan, to clear my mental sinuses. River God provided a wonderful illusion of history without actually approaching it -- not even the names were Egyption. In Seventh Scroll, set in contemporary times, Smith excuses himself by having a character dismiss River God as a fanciful elaboration on the scrolls of Taita. Life imitates art imitating the afterlife, apparently. Seventh Scroll chronicles the race to find the tomb of Mamose deep in a river gorge in Ethiopia. To move the action along, Smith uses the already wretched brutality of Ethiopian insurgency and inflates it with large-than-life villains. Of course, a larger than life story needs that kind of evildoer, and a crooked colonel, a brutal ex-KGB thug, and a neo-Nazi billionaire -- plus carnivorous eels invented for the retribution of the gods -- serve beautifully. If you are "interested in history and want to learn about Egypt," SHUN THIS BOOK. Otherwise, read and enjoy. Like its predecessor, a delightful waste of time.

After reading the River God I could barely wait for the second book to be released. I am interested in Ancient Egypt and am always looking for good books fact or fiction. Someone told me Wilbur Smith was writing a third book to follow The Seventh Scroll. I suggest both these books to readers of all kinds. If anyone can give me any informaion on this or any other good books I would appreciate it. Thanks Gayle

Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: An AMAZING nonstop adventure - Guys will love it!! Review: This book is Wilbur Smith's best! - Its a nonstop hunt for ancient Egyptian treasure, but not where you might think - set in the 20th century - lots of villans. Extremely discriptive and visual. I read it a year ago and I'm not much of a reader, but I still think about the story a year later. I promise that you will like it - men probably more than women, although its also a pretty fair love story. Get this one!!
