Summary: Enter this book,&you'll relive a late-18th century France!
Review: Wonderful!I've never read a history (fiction) book as mesmerizing as this! MRS.Gulland recounts the events so wonderfully and the speeches so livably that as though I'm living in the-18th century France with Josephine. Well, I prefer to call this book a 'struggle for living' book rather than a romantic book, it's better to be called a biography than a novel. It's so fantastic for all ages, including an-11-year old girl like me. LISEZ CE LIVRE, ET VOUS SEREZ UNE FOLLE APRES!

Summary: Absolutely enthralling
Review: This book came highly recommended - but I had no idea how engrossed I became in the story and all the wonderful twists and turns. After trying to suffer through a much touted novel, Possession, I had started to wonder about Amazon's five star rating. I agree with the majority of the ratings. This book is excellent, the diary format was a welcome change. Unlike this book's foes, I loved the asides of interesting facts from the era. Please read this book - it is outstanding. Luckily, Vol. 2 is out.

Summary: Almost as good as time travel
Review: This book is excellent in drawing the reader back to the time of pre-revolutionary France and the French Revolution. Through the use of the first person diary format, the reader feels she is there, living as a minor French aristocrat before the revolution and, in its most captiviting chapters, living through the fear of the Terror and in the shadow of the guillotine. I particularly enjoyed the use of interesting details of how daily life was lived in that time, details which many authors leave out or may not have researched as thoroughly as Ms. Gulland has. These details give reality to another time and to the life of an ordinary woman who remakes herself into the leading lady of France.

Summary: Loved learning and feeling Josephine was with me!
Review: I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I was crazed when I finished "The Many Lives.." because Part II had not yet been published. Well, I waite a few weeks, then "Tales of Passion.." hit the stores. I could then continue learning about the "life and affairs" of Josephine Bonaparte. I wish that every history book could so eloquently be told in this way. What a treat to find a story written about history with such passion!

Summary: MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING
Review: A big disappointment. I know, that Josephine was to lazy to write a diary, she was even to lazy in writing letters - so I cannot appreciate the books of Mrs.Gulland. Her idea of a Rose-Josephine diary is sooo wrong. Try to find the novel "The roses of Malmaison" by Gaby von Schoenthan and compare!

Summary: This was one of the most eloquent histories I have read.
Review: I am an avid reader of English and French biographies, and this book captivated me. Some books are too long to keep the readers' interest, but "The Many Lives..." never lost mine. This may be suprising considering that I am in high school. I would recommend this book to readers of all ages who would like to learn about the life of one of the most over-looked queens of all time.

Summary: What a read!
Review: This novel illustrates the life of a fascinating woman while enlightening the reader. The historical detail never encumbers the movement of the story, and the diary/letter format delivers a personal richness to what would be merely dry information. I would like to thank Ms. Gulland for providing what I have long awaited... a historical novel that shares the soul of its subject.

Summary: BUY This Book!!!
Review: Wow!!! What a wonderfully enjoyable book Sandra Gulland has written . . . I have always been quite interested in European History, but anytime I bought a book about any historical figure or period I felt as if I they were too . . . too . . . well I can't find the exact expression for what I felt they were like but they never suceeded in taking me, the reader, into the world of the story.

Not so with Jospehine B. I was instantly swept up in her world - her fears, her troubles, her triumphs, her heartbreak. The diary format works like a charm!!!

I could not put it down . . .

My only adive besides buying the book is to wait until @ least the 2nd volume comes out - then you won't be suffering like I am waiting for the 2nd volume to come out and the 3rd? Forget about the 3rd - it's not slated until November 2000 - AARGH!!!!

Summary: A fun and easy read!
Review: I loved this book- couldn't put it down. Though it does lack a certain depth, it is still a great read. We are pulled into Josephine's world and come to admire her as a strong and powerful individual.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING
Review: I found this book absolutely outstanding--riviting. It made reviewing history a pleasure. I learned much. I especially liked the diary format--most unusual and interesting.

I anxiously await number 2 and number 3.
