Rating: Summary: It's not a death AIDS story. It's a LIFE aids story. Review: I expected a depressing story about a lonely young black woman and her lost love and family. Instead, I enjoyed a story about 2 sisters appreciating each other and some very strong love relationships. I'm glad Oprah suggested this book. I would never have read it otherwise
Rating: Summary: Absolutely Suberb!!! Review: Pearl Cleage's first book is filled with such intense emotions. As you keep reading Pearl just describes every emotion Ava goes through with such detail, it makes you feel like it was your own. Every chapter just gets better. A book which truly shows hope despite the circumstances. Truly uplifting.
Rating: Summary: Brilliantly written, satisfying to read. Review: From the first page, Ava had my undivided attention as she told me about her "stopover" visit with her older sister on her way to a new home and a new life in San Francisco.Author, Pearl Cleage speaks with a voice of experience as she weaves a love story around issues such as HIV, safe sex, drugs, sexual and physical abuse, etc. A delightful story of real life and real love.
Rating: Summary: Wow! a page turner that arouses every emotion possible. Review: The author grabs your attention from page one and doesn't let you go until you've cried , laughed, said a few amens and finally, praise mother/father god. The subject matter is real. The characters are alive and not too well in many urban and not so urban environments. Pearl Cleage has touched on so many of the subjects we, black folks don't like to talk about. I loved her honesty, courage and humor. This book made me do some soul searching. Her hairdresser insights were right on target as far as I am concerned. This was an amazing first novel. I hope Ms. Cleage decides to right more.
Rating: Summary: A refreshing warm look at a 90's woman facing 90's issues Review: This first novel was a delight to read. The characters were well developed and probably reminded you of someone you really knew. The complex societal issues explored were handled in a realistic and non-sugarcoated manner. I rejoiced at the peace and happiness Ada found in her life, in spite of the life threatening disease that she lived with. Hurry Ms. Cleage, I am waiting for your next release!
Rating: Summary: down-to-Earth, fun read. Great way to spend an afternoon... Review: I found this book to be witty, funny, and touching. Although the author writes from an African-American perspective, I found it applicable to every culture and small town.
Rating: Summary: Quick, thoughtful, easy read!! Review: This was a fun book. Cleage could have covered this material more thouroughly--200 more pages would have made the book complete without feeling rushed. Lot's of real life issues here and they all seemed to solve themselves. However, wonderful characters and a love story which begins with the first lines of the book.
Rating: Summary: Quick read, but catchy and witty Review: I must say, that I am an avid reader of Oprah picks and this time her selection is right on the money. Cleage writes a warm and loving first novel that combines touching moments laced with hilarious sarcasm. It adds up to a really interesting book which I was not able to put down over the weekend. Of course, Oprah would not pick a book for her book club that did not convey a subtle messsage and this one certainly does, loud and clear. Definately worth a read.
Rating: Summary: excellent book for any woman aged 15 to 150! Review: this was an excellent book that really relates to women of the inner city, especially minorities. it is also an eye opener for non-minority women to and a mechansim for them to see what the "ordinary is outside of suburbia" also a good educational reference/source for young women regarding hiv, sexual awareness!!
Rating: Summary: Don't miss it!!! Review: This is an excellent book. The characters are well developed and the story will make you laugh and cry. This book will have you so involved you won't want to put it down. The book was realistic, powerful, sad, happy, moving and more. This is a must read book.
