Summary: Down plays lots of serious issues, but also a good read
Review: The serious issues in this book are downplayed, but I found it a good read anyway. Besides I love happy endings and was badly needing a happy ending in my lfie at this time.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: This books was well written
Review: This is one of the best I've read in a long time I really and truely enjoyed this book, I weeped and laughed so hard and cryed and I've never cried doring a book in my life, But while reading this book I cried so hard.

Summary: A novel of hope and salvation...
Review: In a deceptively simple style, Pearl Cleage has written a novel of hope and salvation wrapped around a classic love story with a 90's twist. Her characters are sharply drawn with an ear for dialogue that hints at Cleage's experience as a playwright. Her pace is no nonsense, with just enough detail to keep the story moving. This is a quick read, entertaining, and uplifting. As the cliche goes..."I laughed, I cried..." I loved every minute of it.

Summary: Oprah gets one right
Review: While I agree with the previous poster, that Oprah should get out the publishing recommendation busines, this time Oprah chose correctly. I would say Oprah is right about every 5th book she recommends. And this book is a winner. So absorbing and heart felt and wonderful. A truly perfect book.

Summary: Eye opening experience!
Review: I really enjoyed this book! It certainly opened my eyes to the realities of the world. This is a great book for discussion in book groups or to just read on your own. Great job Cleage!

Summary: A fun sad story of two sisters helping each other and others
Review: I read this book very fast. One: because it was a short book! And 2- it was just such a great interesting story! The one sister returns home from Atlanta, with AIDS to visit her sister, planning to just stay a short time. She becomes involved inher sisters generousity with the poor young girls of the town--ignoring the church re: birth control methods, etc. Especially after she takes in an unwanted crack baby. There's much more, including a love story. I really enjoyed the book & wasn't totally Depressed at the end!

Summary: Very human, a bit raw in parts.
Review: I'm from the area that she wrote about. There's a great deal of history in Idlewild. I thought her story was realistic, humorous, natural. I enjoyed the book very much.

Summary: Good book, last passage moved the rating to 4 stars
Review: I enjoyed this book, although it wasn't that I could not put it down. I have to say that the last passage of this book is by far the best writing of the whole book. And true. I had sense that I had to read that passage to my roommate and sister. It moved me in a way that I didn't find the book to do throughout. Also, you learn to love Eddie. He made the book that much more interesting and I wonder if that was the point at all. Overall, I enjoyed the book and would recommend it.

Summary: Full of Simple Pleasures
Review: I really enjoyed this book. I actually found myself smiling while reading it. It wasn't a profound statement in African-American literature, but it examined life's problems on a much smaller scale. Perhaps the most difficult thing about this book was the sudden shifts in moods. Cleage contradicted herself when she took peaceful-tai chi practicing Eddie and made him quickly revert back to his old ways and want to kill Frank. I found that to be a little off. Other than that it was a fun book that put a smile on my face. I look forward to more light-hearted writing from Cleage.

Summary: GREAT!
Review: Was it fact or fiction? I had to look at the cover of the book several times to make sure it was really fiction. Pearl Cleage had me convinced that it was a true story about her own life. I read this in one sitting and enjoyed every minute of it!
