Rating: Summary: Engaging! Review: I couldn't stop reading this book! It is a very powerful piece of literate in a quick read. A love story, but much deeper than that. A story about good people creating their own destiny. Definately recommended.
Rating: Summary: Simply outstanding! Review: I was captivated by this story from the very first page! Pearl Cleage's characterization of Ava Johnson as a world weary, sharp-as-a tack, woman of the 90's had me cheering her evolution into self-discovery. I delighted in the way in which Cleage gave power to her characters through her mastery of language and thought. I remember thinking that if I were ever to write a novel (which I never will) I would have created a character as vivid and vivacious as Ava. I wholeheartedly recommend reading this book, which, despite its depiction of incredibly dark issues of abuse on many levels, is a powerful, life-affirming tale of redeption!
Rating: Summary: The book was just wonderful Review: I am only 17 and don;t really read a lot of books but the was that Ava and joyce talked in this book and the kinds of things that went on were just like real life. It made you feel as if you were living right in the middle of everything that was going in in the book. All that i can really say is well done. I loved the book and I am going to read it again because i liked it so much.
Rating: Summary: Fast paced and exciting Review: This book was just overflowing with the good stuff. I really enjoyed the "mini-mystery" involving the church, as well as delving into the lives of the good and the bad of the people living in Idlewild, Michigan, the all-black paradise. Exciting and unexpected twists at the end left me wanting more. Ms. Cleage gets kudos from me for this wonderful first novel.
Rating: Summary: FELL IN LOVE WITH AVA Review: This novel sparkled with life and humor. Even the darkness, because it was so cleverly written, enriched the book. I particularly enjoy female characters who deal with life head on, who plow right in with spunk, wit, the occasional acid tongue, and dogged determination like Ada, and like Darla in June Park's THE BINGO QUEENS OF PARADISE, and like Mildred in Terry McMillan's MAMA. Books such as these these entertain me with their outlandish characters and gut wrenching stories. They keep me reading through the night. Some books don't live up to the hype. This one did, and then some. Thanks, Pearl Cleage.
Rating: Summary: Loved it! Review: I didn't want to read this book initially because I thought it would be sad, given the main character's illness. Wrong! In Pearl Cleage's hands, Ava was full of life and spunk. If you haven't read this book, do so NOW!
Rating: Summary: I think that this is one of the best novels of the year. Review: Pearl Cleage is one of the most outsatanding writers of our time. She is also a very bright scholar. Her books and plays are finally getting the recognition they deserve.
Rating: Summary: Basic good read. Review: A middle of the road book. I would also place it in the middle of the Oprah selections. Not the best, but not the worst.
Rating: Summary: This is more than inspiring it's a jewel if you like this go Review: Read another great book Signals by Joel Rothschild These are the books that make reading worthwhile. It can change your life for ever. Don't miss either one. It's money well spent.
Rating: Summary: A fun read Review: The narrator of this book seems to have a smile on her face as she takes us through her personal evolution. A book you can read on a lazy afternoon that will make you laugh, but at the sametime have respect for the serious subject matter.
