Rating: Summary: The Best Book.................Ever! Review: The Godfatehr is the best book that I have ever read in my entire life. I loved this book so much that I will probably read it about 20 more times in my life time. I think that one of the reasons I liked this book so much is because I loved the movie. The book and the movie were very much alike. That only makes this book all the better. I think that Mario Puzzo paints the greatest mental picture with words. He is by far the best writer that I have ever come in contact with. I usually dodge in and out of the story line when I daze off a bit but, in this book I didn't catch myself dazing that much at all. I suggest to everyone who reads this review, "You must read the book, or I will feel like a failure."
Rating: Summary: The greatest American novel of all time Review: Truly a work which cries out for more than five stars. The Godfather is without peer as a story of an American family.Vito Andolini comes to America from the town of Corleone and supports his family in the only way left open for him. His sons alternately adore and emulate him; reject and rebuke him, and cannot live up to his greatness. Inevitably, his world becomes theirs. It would be a particular treat to those who know the story only as a movie. Don't be misled: the movie, as great as it is pales in comparison to the book. This is a book to read and re-read. Each time I have gone through it, I find more; additional layers and items to contemplate. It will make the most boring plane ride pass more quickly, or make the most beautiful beach in the world more comfortable. After dozens of times, it is a most valued travel companion.
Rating: Summary: A Modern Epic Review: A story of the human condition, the Godfather is profound and intense. A perfect balance of description and concept.
Rating: Summary: Strong, But Constantly Strayed From The Important Characters Review: I read The Godfather after I had seen the movie about 20 times. The movie is wonderful! Al Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duvall, and the unforgettable Marlon Brando brought the beauty and evil out of the Mafia. When I read the book, I was expecting a brilliant piece of literature. I was disappointed. Who cares about Lucy Mancini and Johnny Fontaine? I think I'll stick to the movie.
Rating: Summary: Re-reading the Godfather Review: Somehow, I find myself reading this book time and again--it's like an old friend. And as one reads it, one is amazed at Puzo's ability to create characters that are so real in such an atypical setting as a crime family. There is not a single character without his or her own reality--from Mama Corleone who silently watches her husband meet his destiny and still goes every morning to church so that he doesn't go "down there", to Michael, who slowly gets drawn into the family business, and a life very different from the one he had originally planned as a math professor, to Nino Valenti, who'd rather die an alchoholic than be a Hollywood star.
Rating: Summary: Superb! Review: "I don't do favors - I collect debts" Though the quote (which is an old Sicilian proverb) did not come from the Godfather, it captures the essence of Don Corleone's way of life. This book is difficult if not impossible to put down and leaves one respecting and admiring (in a way, at least) the mafia code and way of life. A must read for anyone who is interested in the organization behind organized crime.
Rating: Summary: Classic, Classic, Classic ! Review: What else can I say. A must read for anyone interested in Mafia. One of the greatest books I have ever read!
Rating: Summary: A Story You Can't Refuse Review: A compelling page-turner! Don't let the setting fool you; this is a story of passing-on from father to son. All else orbits this. I've read another comment saying the characters lack emotion. In such a setting emotion is a deadly weakness as Vito and Michael learn too well and Sonny fatally doesn't. Such "lack of emotion" - more like "control of emotion" - is the tone of the story. That Vito sheds a tear for his son's massacred corpse sets the undertone of family love and loyalty. Everything in the movies is in the book because none of these elements are wasted. The book's detours to otherwise peripheral characters are why I gave this book 4 instead of 5 stars; I would have given a 9 out of 10 if Amazon allowed it.
Rating: Summary: Sheer Perfection. Review: The Godfather is just simply perfect. Big, brash, romantic, and honest. If you have a choise between the book and movie choose the book. although hard to believe the book is 10 times more gripping the movie.
Rating: Summary: The greatest story ever told Review: This book ranks up there with the bible. I loved it. The movies are my favorites. You just can't beat a well written mafia story.
