Rating: Summary: Incredible, relatable experience of a masterminding story. Review: This book brought tears but made up for with smiles. The perfect thought of life sets the scene of a town that falls apart. A natures' reality of instincts are expressed with vivid but breathtaking scenes.
Rating: Summary: Terrible Review: This was typical "New York is best and the rest of the world is full of country bumpkins" stuff we see ad nauseum today. Why not a book about Montana ranchers setting alligators free in Manhatten ? New Yorkers are "Tan and fit " while people from Montana are inbred country "Hicks" who hate everything. Oddly enough, I wonder why the writer pushed smoking as so glamorous ?
Rating: Summary: If you read it in 2 days, it must be gripping... Review: I just put down The Loop, and couldn't believe how great of a story it was. As a biologist, and a woman, I finally found a "scientist" character worth relating to. The wolf narratives were interesting, but not as well developed as they could be. I kept waiting for an explanation as to why these wolves in particular were suddenly so interested in cattle and livestock. Nonetheless, I was taken by the story and the all to familiar battle between environmentalists and those making a living from the land. I loved the Horse Whisperer, and I can recommend The Loop as a great ride of a story.
Rating: Summary: MISSING SOME "LOOP"HOLES BUT YET, VIVID! Review: I was intrigued by the cover as any curious person would be. I read The Horse Whisperer and felt Evans had drawn out the character developments too far. It was slow going. When I started The Loop, I felt the same, waiting for the storyline to appear. As someone has said, wolves don't often stalk out family babies or dogs. So I found that a bit far fetched. Yet as movies are made dramatic to entertain, so too are novels for the sake of drama. Finally when Helen Ross arrived in Montana, I got to know everyone closer, more intimately. In the end, the introduction of wolves seemed to take a backseat to backcountry "bigger gender organs." Buck Calder could have easily been played by actor J.T. Walsh before his untimely death in 1998. Helen Ross could be acted by Suzy Amis or Annette O'Toole. But the reader of Evan's latest book will always remember the roundup of the plot...love conquers all and cowboys always get their girl. A good book in Montana or Florida.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding, gut wrenching, accurate perspective Review: This new book has sucked me in like a vacuum. If you have ever had the luck to meet a wolf and have rallied for wolf reintroduction, you will fully appreciate this book. Mr. Evans transported me to the inner sanctum of the wolf pack and the issues surrounding reintroduction. Here in New Mexico the ranchers have hired wolf hit men and have killed off many. I am reading this at a time when 31 wild horses have been tortured and shot and left to die in Nevada. I certainly hope that this book increases public awareness about the plight of the misunderstood wolf. The circle of life depends upon it. His writing is breathtaking as usual and his characters carefully constructed. There is nothing superficial about this novel. Brilliant and Bravo.
Rating: Summary: A quick read Review: I almost quit this book after the first couple of chapter because it sounded like it was going to be a polemic about good wolves and bad ranchers. Since I grew up on a ranch and had some great-uncles who kept starvation from the door in the late 1800s by hunting wolves for bounty, I know there are at least two sides to the wolf story. However, once you get past the political correctness THE LOOP turns into a good adventure story. The villian is a rancher but Evans doesn't use him as a symbol of the archetypal rancher--he's just a character in a story. Evans has obviously spent some time in Montana doing research. This book doesn't pretend to be present an objective picture of the conflict between ranchers and wildlife biologists. It's just a fun adventure story. If you're interested in a good novel that offers a more complete and balanced picture of the issues between Montana ranchers and wildlife biologists, I suggest Richard Wheeler's THE BUFFALO COMMONS.
Rating: Summary: I Loved it! Review: I know some people are upset that the book's setting wasn't like it really is. Personally I don't think that should matter. The book is wonderful. I don't live in Montana and I never visited there, so I don't know if the author's veiw point of the area is accurate or not. Personally I don't care. I think it is a wonderful book and even though I don't belive wolves would attack like that, it was very entertaining.
Rating: Summary: Come on People, This is fiction! Review: I thought it was a Good book. After starting I didn't want to put it down. I beleive people judged it by its cover "Wolves", for some of the harsher reviews. I did not read nor see "The Horse Whisperer". The imagery of Montana was delicious, in my mind I was there. I could place myself in both the Locals & Outsiders frame of mind. Old school and set in our ways vs. Young, open minded and idealistic. I thought, as one other review that the ending was quite abrupt, other than that I enjoyed it very much.
Rating: Summary: Amazing and Inspiring!! Review: I'm fifteen years old and bought this book for my mother for Christmas, but I ended up reading it myself before giving it to her. I found the book captivating, I simply couldn't put it down. I've always had an avid interest in wolves and am planning on majoring in biology or zoology. I found that the author must have done a good amount of research in both the book and The Horse Whisperer. I definately recommend this book!!
Rating: Summary: Found myself sitting in the car, just listening! Review: I enjoyed this tape and the wonderful discriptions of the wild wolves. The reader was magnificent. His voice portrayal of the villian in the story was superb! A beautiful romance!
