Summary: Superlative novel!!!!
Review: EXODUS ranks with the best novels ever written in the 20th Century. Leon Uris hasn't produced anything very worthwhile for a few years, but this early work is magnificent. I highly recommend reading it, along with three recent novels I found exceptional as well, THE READER, STONES FROM THE RIVER, and THE TRIUMPH AND THE GLORY. They will touch your heart!

Summary: One of the best books ever written, bar none!
Review: Uris' "Exodus" would have to be one of the best books ever written. I am only nineteen and a Russian-gone-American Jew, so I obviously have no first hand experience with any of the events that occured in the novel, but through thorough research on the subject, I would have to say that the so-called "anti-Arab/British stereotypes" in this novel are sadly true. The books does present Englishmen, like Major Malcolm, Brigadier Sutherland, as well as the commander of the Safed area; American Christians, like Kitty Freemont, the main character, and Mark Parker and Arabs, like Kammal, the muktar of Abu Yesha who were sympathetic to the cause of the Jewish people. Those who are quick to criticize Uris for his apparent "racism" towards the Arabs and the British forget about the SIX THOUSAND YEARS of horror and persecution inflicted upon the Jewish people. From the time of the Pharaohs to the Spanish Inquisition to the porgroms of the Tzarist Russia to the Holocaust, Jews have been treated as second class citizens, harassed, persecuted and cast out of every corner of the world, and this book accurately and thoroughly describes the plight of one of the most persevering nations on this planet, a nation that gave this world such giants as Sigmund Freud, Heinrich Heine and Albert Einstein, to name just a few. Since I was a little girl, growing up in Moscow, I have had to deal with the stubborn Russian anti-Semitism personally, as had my parents and my grandparents (one of whom had spent several years in a Russian concentration camp). This books is a beautifully woven tale of the rise of the Jews like a phoenix from the ashes, casting away the centuries of horror and agony to rise as a nation. As for the characters of "Exodus", there are as three-dimensional and human to me as though they stood right before me. The tenderness and kindness of Karen Hansen Clement who could hate no living thing and clawed out her paradise at Nahal Midbar only to be slain there by a gang of fedayeen, the nightmarish desperation, hopelessness and bitterness chanelled into an avalanch of creativity and talent of Karen's sweetheart, Dov Landau, the devotion and perseverence of Jordana Ben Canaan and her passionate love towards the dreamy-eyed scholar David Ben Ami, are as alive and real today as they were forty years ago. Ari Ben Canaan's character, that of a proud and fierce freedom fighter who did break down his wall and cried for his wide-eyed courageous Kitty, stands immortal through the years. Anybody who is a Jew, anybody who is a Gentile, anybody at all should read this novel of triumph over tyranny.

Summary: A book which should instill pride in all Jews.
Review: I think many of you are misunderstand the point of the novel. I found it captivating and beautiful. If you take every historical inaccuracy to heart, then you will certainly not enjoy it, but that is not the purpose of the novel. It is a history of the Jews and their suffering. Although the details are not perfect, no one can dispute that the Jews did suffer and this novel is a wonderful way to establish this and celebrate their homeland.

Summary: Religious, Historical, Touching and Informative
Review: Shalom. The 'Exodus' was my first Leon Uris' book and definately won't be my last! The book is an unfolding story that is full of fact, drama, romance, action, religion and skillfully inter-woven fiction. From a Jewish perspective, the book accurately documents Jewish persecution and is a wonderful book that educates people about the struggle of the Jews through history and the struggle of Eretz Israel. From an historical point of view, the book is somewhat accurate. The book illuminates the actions of the nations involved accurately. Yes, the British and the Arabs are portrayed as sly and anti-semetic, but this may be the truth in this case. Uris is only highlighting events and actions - if they make the people look evil or horrific then maybe that is the truth about their actions? Most of the events are facts - we have to face them. The book is an amazing work of literature. The story is so vivid, that one feels as though they themselves are present at the time of the events and are part of the action. The way in which the book is written make you feel as though you are very close to the characters and you begin to feel that the tragedies that they experience and have experienced have happened to you as well. The story was truly gripping. I could not put the book down and was drawn into the world of the 'Exodus'. I was saddened when I finally finished the book and wished that it would contiue with the story. I think that every single person in the world should read this book. It really does affect you and makes you realize just what people will do and just how they will sacrifice their own lives for the cause of their people. It also historically educates you and learnt a lot from the book. I now want nothing less than to travel to Eretz Israel and to see Gan Dafna, the Acre Jail in from which Akiva and Dov were freed! I now want to see the Biblical sights that the characters talked about. It seems that people who have read this book feel the spirit of its story and characters with them forever! I have to agree, a truly unique and special book! Alana from Durban

Summary: Exodus isn't prejudiced, and I don't know why some say it is
Review: I've read this book 9 times, and each time I read it, I enjoy it more. It brings to life the horrors of the Holocaust, as well as the dtermination of the Jews to be treated as equals. While many people have labeled Exodus as being prejudiced against British and Arabs, I can not see why. Uris shows both sides of the coin, good British and Arabs, and bad ones as well. If you think he portrays them all in bad light, I would like to remind you, Sutherland and P.P. Malcolm, two heroes, are British. And Kammel, an Arab, is portrayed to be a kind, benevolent leader who wants the best for his people. And, one more thing to say about the 'prejudice' in the book, anyone who knows anything about the Middle East and British rule at that time knows this is a historiclly accurate book. The British did break promise after promise to the Jews, and the Arabs did attack settlements and try to destroy Israel. Uris is not being prejudiced, he is only telling the truth. So for anyone who thinks British and Arabs were given a bad name in this book, I suggest you do a little research, read it again, and then re-evaluate your opinion.

Summary: People really believe this stuff, kinda scary
Review: Biased, historically inaccurate as it comes to Middle East issues, racist towards Arabs mostly. Amazing but people do take it seriously. Oy!

Summary: The best book ever written about the Land of promise.
Review: The book was not only captivating but also very informitave. The whole concept of exploring the land of honey and milk between the guts and blood of reality caught me as an imbecile to be of extraordinary importance in understanding the whole idea of retaking the promised land. A good read to the very last and extremely entertaining. The characters ,their motivations, ideals and dreams are intermeshed in an intricate yet subtle work of art. So what if basically been trying to say:"this is the type of book Beethoven would have written if he was blind."

Summary: The Perfect Historically-based book
Review: It's the perfect historically-based book, since it blends together historical truth and pure fiction in the best way, when the oven is Uris' great talent for epic stories.

Yet, most important for me was the completely objective insight into the Israeli-Palestinian problem, as seen by an outsider in Israel / Palestine back then. The book was also written about the same time the events in the story take place, so it's much easier to analize the beginning of that painful relationship (if you can call it relationship) without digging pass all the added complications since then.

Summary: The Truth about Exodus
Review: I read this book for school and was assigned a project on it. My class also viewed the movie Exodus. The assignment was basically to look beyond the pages of the book and find out whats real and what isn't. First of all, this is a given, both the author and the producers are Pro Zionist, so of course they are going to make a movie and book sterotyping the British and Palestians. I, myself am nor Jewish,Palestian or British. I'm Puerto Rican, so don't think I am favoring one side because I belong to that group of peoples. And explain to me this the purpose of the love affair between Ari Ben Canaan and Kitty Fermont is what? There is no point its just to catch the eye of the young adults in America and try to sympathize with the characters. HELLO, before any of u say of this is a great book why don't u look at the mechanics here!! It was all false accusations for the producers and authors to gain profits! a DUH!
