Summary: Shows the truth in fiction
Review: Exodus shows the struggle and hardships of the Jews throughout the ages. It shows how they were betrayed and how they fought harder than anyone else. All the characters are just representations of the many Jews struggling. What may seem like the main idea of the book, a fictional dramatic story, depicts the truth behind the battle, labor, and endeavors the Jews have faced; the fictional dramatic story is just a side note. Someone who knows everything or nothing about Jewish history should READ THIS BOOK!

Summary: Sad
Review: Sad. To see all these people go nuts over nationalist tripe that is dangerously false on fact and brutally racist in tone does not bode well for the future of humanity, the Middle East or Jews and Arabs.

This outdated work appeals primarily to Jews of East European personal or family origin where nationalism (as anyone who follows Yugoslavia and Chechnya or WWII central europe knows) is crude simplistic, violence-venerating, and myth-loving.

Sad to see Jewish values submerged in a hack-novel tale designed to jsutify a claim to a piece of dirt in the Middle East by presenting it as a heroic resurrection of a people against others who lived there who are stereotpyed viciously.

Summary: Forget the movie; read the book!
Review: Who thought the film of this novel was good? I read the book for the first time as a teenager and thought it was superb; excitingly paced, with involving characters and a nice grasp of cultural differences. My only reservation is the book's clear (and somewhat overstated) bias in favor of the Zionists; they are clearly the heroes and anyone opposed to them is depicted as evil. But, of course, most books have a point of view. If you wish to experience this epic story, PLEASE don't bother with the overlong, overblown, and poorly cast film; the book is far superior.

Summary: From someone named after Ari...
Review: From someone named after Ari Ben Canaan, and from someone's sister named after Jordana, I feel honored and blessed to share a name with one of the greatest historical fictional characters of all time. Besides, it is not everyday when I can accurately say that Paul Newman played me in the film!

Summary: Represents an era of Jewish Political thought. Great book.
Review: Today, most Israelis would be embarassed at some of the statements in Exodus. No doubt we are proud of our accomplishments in the face of extraordinary odds. Yet, many of the generalisations about Arabs are either prejudiced or politically motivated.

It is not true that the Arabs forged no progress in Palestine since the Dark Ages - in fact it is nonesense. Uris' random 'good' Arab characters is a classic psychological way that one allows ones self to be prejudiced. "Some of my best friends were Jewish," the Germans said after the war. "Some of the best characters in Exodus were Arabs," Uris would maintain. Hitler sent his mom to a Jewish doctor ... these tidbits prove nothing.

In the book, Barak ben-Canaan's statement on the refugees, blaming arabs, is perhaps the worst case. Uris implies that the Palestinians should have moved to the empty space in Iraq. If your nation were taken by an ideological polar opposite with whom you cannot live, would it be accpetable to you to move to a nation perceived as 'similar' to your homeland? It is a problem of grouping all arabs together, and it continues till today. To slander a people as Uris does is embarassing, but viewed in the light of the political conflicts at the time of authorship, we should let these slide, and accept the epic story for its great worth in inspiring readers to believe in something great, and for explornig the sabra psyche in its origin.

"The only realistic conlclusion is to believe in miracles."

Summary: Religiously biased
Review: Mr. Uris shows the Jewish heroes and heroines as secular Jews. No verbal, or visual projection of observant Jews. However, when any piety is shown, it is when John Derek, the actor, playing an Arab is in focus. Jews, secular Zionists who have affairs, e.g., Jordana, a kibbutznik, Paul Newman with gentile blonde nurse. Heaven forbid, they should should show an observant Jewish male and an observant Jewish female as heroes.

Summary: An impassioned novel about the birth of Israel
Review: How can I describe "Exodus"? A number of words come to mind. Truth, justice, passion are all fitting descriptions. But there's more, a more which may never be fully described. When I first read this book, I was nine, and in fourth grade. I was blown away. As young as I was, I knew that this book was not like any others I had ever read, or would ever read again. Since that first encounter, I re-read the book at least once every year, and each time I feel the same bewilderment at the essance of Uris's genious. For that is what he is- a genious. No other author has the power to make you feel and think the way Leon Uris does. He builds up a connection with the characters, a connection that I feel every time I pick up the book. At each reading of "Exodus" I dance around my room like Karen, feel the heart-wrenching emotions of Kitty, and experience the stone-cold, synical, one-of-a-kind personality of the "sabra" Ari. I cannot remember a time that I have not wanted to name my children after the characters of "Exodus." The history of the birth of Israel is a subject I am exceedingly interested in, and the non-fiction that the book containes is woven masterfully in with stunning contrast to the fiction, creating the perfect touch. Since my first reading, I have changed my whole view on life and my Jewish identity. I cannot say enough about "Exodus." My life would not be the same without it.

Summary: Exodus is a true classic written at the hands of a master.
Review: Exodus is one of my all-time favorites. I first read it when I was 13 and was in awe of what Uris could do with a little history and some fiction. I feel true empathy for the Jewish people and respect them immensely. Uris is a genius and I aspire to become a writer of his caliber one day. Any one who considers themselves a seeker of the truth should read this book for a good idea of what truly happened to the Jewish people.

Summary: Outstanding
Review: The book kept me riveted. It contained drama, suspense, romance and history.

Summary: Leon Uris's greatest novel after "Trinity"
Review: I think this book is a great book. In my opinion it is one of the best books ever written, and is Leon Uris's second best after "Trinity" (which has a sequel to it, "Redemption").

The book isn't as biased as many people say. However, as every novel writer, Leon Uris dramatizes the moment and the Israeli heroes come off better than either the Arabs or the British. But the book isn't biased.

Also, it is quite truthful. Since I am from Israel and am interested in the story of the creation of Israel, I know that most events in the book are real events that happened from 1947 to about 1948 and are described truthfully.

In the end, it's just one of the best books I personally ever read, and Leon Uris is my favorite writer of all times and all languages!!!
