Summary: poore homework on Eastern European issues.
Review: A quick review. This was one of my biggest disappointments ever, and I am talking about the section of the book associated with Eastern Europe and especially with Poland. I wonder where the author's informations came from. The level of research is extremely poor on the subject and whatever came out of it is totaly misleading , ignorant and unacceptable. There are countless publications on the issue of Warsaw Getto, there is Institut of Jewish Studies in Warsaw with it's archives, huge amount of available studies.....etc. I am sure this was the last book of Uris I had in hand. This seems to be the best way to avoid being missleaded on the other subjects I am not so aware off

Summary: Well-told Middle East fantasy but don't take it seriously
Review: This book will enthrall you and it has been the basis for much of the popular myths about modern Israel in America and the American Jewish community. As Middle East history fairly told, it's garbage, but as fantasy it's fun and pleasantly readable. You can usually rely on Leon Uris to write a good and moving story complete with heroic characters and sweep. You can't, however, rely on him for honest history or a portrayal of Arabs that presumes them to be members of the human race

Summary: Romantic historical fiction
Review: Exodus tells the history of Israel from early European immigration to Statehood. Whilst history can be a boring form of reading for some, this book weaves a romantic story that contains the elements of love, war, violence and pathos in a soap -opera fashion. Yet, the story is such that it grabs the reader from the start and holds on until the end. There is a bit too much detail for this reader, nevertheless the description is vivid and true-to-life. For teaching the history of Israel and the Jewish people (as I am doing ), I can attest to the fact, that young adults are fascinated by Exodus, regardless of the daunting size of the novel

Summary: Exodus is the most humane novel I ever read. It's excellent.
Review: Exodus is the best novel that I ever read, it shows the birth of a nation in the middle of their enemy. It describes us the Nazi crimes against the jews in Europe and remembered us that that kind of crimes had been happening for several centuries in Europe, and the Arab World. Leon Uris shows us the history of the birth of a nation -Israel- by the story of the Ben Canaan family. We can see the moral force that this people have in their fight against injustice, social discrimination and murdering. The novel describes us the worst side of human-beings by telling us the crimes of the Nazis and the injustice of the English government, but it describes us the best side of humanity too, by the story of the nation of Israel represented in Ben Canaan family, its moral principles, its force. And the most important, Exodus, tells us that love can born in the middle of War and that good sentiments and feelings are more powerful than bad sentiments. This is the story of the birth of the modern Israel

Summary: A textbook example of effective political propaganda
Review: For those fully informed of both sides of the current MIddle East conflict, Leon Uris's "Exodus" remains a truly tragic literary event. A clever and entertaining work of fictional history ("historical fiction" gives it too much credit), it has been, and evidently continues to remain a main source of popular American imagery about the founding of modern Israel and the root causes of the Arab-Israel conflicts. Anti-Arab ethnic stereotype is present though muted (unlike as in later Uris works like The Haj) as the author concentrates on romanticizing the efforts of Jewish survivors of World War II in seeking resettlement in an Arab country without the consent of the inhabitants. The historical violence and terror inflicted upon the Arabs is ignored or justified as are the malignant elements of the ideology behind the protagonists. The book deserves three points: one for Uris's storytelling expertise, one for the book's place as a politically influential work, and one for its value as a proven specimen of effective literary propaganda and fictionalization of history. "Exodus", book and film, may face the same fate in subsequent generations as D.W. Griffith's film "Birth of a Nation" in which vast creative talent has come to be seen as wasted in creating a popular but outdated story glorifying racism

Summary: Effective fictional history and propaganda
Review: "Exodus" is a heartbreaker of a novel, one which indeed evokes tears. It does so especially to those informed on both sides of the current MIddle East conflict who can only weep in despair that this clever and entertaining work of fictional history ("historical fiction" gives it too much credit) has been, and evidently continues to be, (especially as a result of the movie it inspired) a main source of popular American perception about the founding of Israel and the root causes of the Arab-Israel conflicts. Anti-Arab ethnic stereotype is present but muted (unlike his later writings) as the author concentrates on romanticizing the efforts of Jewish survivors of World War II in seeking resettlement in an Arab country without the consent of the inhabitants. The violence and terror inflicted upon the Arabs is ignored or justified as are the malignancies of the ideology of the protagonists. The book deserves three points: one for its storytelling expertise, one for its place as a politically influential work, and one for its value as a specimen of effective literary propaganda and fictionalization of history

Summary: MUST-READ!
Review: EXODUS is a real heartbreaker of a novel, where history and fiction are skilfully mixed. The result is a gripping novel that seems all too real, except for the few instances when Uris goes overboard with the exclamation marks(!!!!)Still, when I first read it I thought I was going to cry for days. It's worth the $7. READ IT

Summary: An opinion-shaping book.
Review: "Exodus" isn't perfect. The characters are rather
stereotypical. I think Herman Wouk is a better author.
But I found "Exodus" at just the right time in my life
for its message, I guess. One has to remember it IS
historical fiction, and one might describe some of it as
propaganda, but it is powerful. He is sympathetic to the
Palestinian Arabs, used as pawns by the
Arab governments, who
are the main villains of the story
though they don't come off as heroic as the Israelis....I can live with all the
characterizations.
