Rating: Summary: A welcome first novel -- it was fun! Review: I love books that put 12 different strands of the story in play and then, one by one, weave them into a great, storied blanket. Tim Dorsey has done just that with Florida Roadkill.Come along for the ride and meet Serge Storms, a psycho bimbo, the most unlucky in love cigarette boat captain, a shameless dentist and a horde of other quirky characters -- like the insurance claims executive who loves to deny people's claims. All I'll say is that what goes around comes around! If you like Carl Hiiasen, Hunter S. Thompson and other writers with a warped bent you'll welcome Tim Dorsey's introduction into the hallowed halls of dementia. Even though the book wraps up in a very satisfying manner you'll be upset when you turn the last page that there isn't more but hey, move on to Hammerhead Ranch Motel -- possibly even funnier than Floriday Roadkill, and Orange Crush, not as funny but it fills in the gap until (hopefully) Mr. Dorsey graces us with book number four which live up to the promise of the first two.
Rating: Summary: Terrific read Review: FLORIDA ROAD KILL only could have been written by someone with a bone deep knowledge of the State of Florida. According to the jacket blurb, author Tim Dorsey was a reporter in Tampa for many years, which explains his authority over the subject matter. The story is kind of a caper, with the bad guy being almost--okay, more--interesting than the hero. There is a vast cast of characters, in the mode of both Charles Dickens and Tom Wolfe, all heading off in various directions until, as is inevitable, their paths collide. Since the story is set in Florida, from Tampa to tony Palm Beach and down to South Beach, ending up in the Keys, there is plenty of money involved, and sex, and kinky sex, and drugs...and murder. The local color is terrific; as someone who has logged a respectable share of hours myself in most of these locations, I can say that Dorsey is spot on. Dorsey's style may be an attempt to pay homage to Hemingway. While he's not Papa, his writing has great energy and he tells a riveting tale. I was sorry when the book concluded, and I look forward to reading the sequel.
Rating: Summary: Five star preformance by Dorsey Review: Florida Road Kill is a very entertaining and comedic book, by the wonderful Tim Dorsey. This book is set in various locations in Florida, including Tampa Bay. The main character in this book is Sarge a highly skilled psychopath off his medications. Sarge knows everything there is to know about the state of Florida and the thing that angers him the most is one who does not care to know the history of Florida. Other main characters in this book are characters that are in other books by this author such as Sharon, the slut slash drug addict, and Coleman, the comedic fat man that also likes to dabble in drugs with Sharon. This book has many small plots all leading to climatic final plot where they all clash, in a wonderfully written comedic finale. I recommend this book to all of those whom have strong stomachs and love to laugh.
Rating: Summary: Laugh Out Loud Hilarious! I read it twice! Review: Tim Dorsey's "Florida Roadkill" is hands down, without a doubt, one of the funniest novels I've read in years! I was laughing by page two! The narrative is fast-paced and top notch. The plot is devilishly multi-layered and engaging. Mr. Dorsey populates his delightfully demented Floridian world with the most whacked out collection of loonies ever assembled. Serge A. Storms is a character that readers will remember for some time. Mentally unbalanced and a font of trivial pursuit-esque knowledge. Coleman, Serge's sidekick, is a whack-a-loon of the highest caliber. There's a seen involving Coleman, an almost successful bank robbery and a poorly hidden dye-pack that had me laughing till my sides hurt. Clearly a scene that could easily be adapted for the big screen by the Farrelly brothers! The supporting cast of nut-jobs really flesh this novel out! To name but only a few....Sharon Rhodes. Johnny Vegas. The Riders of Eternal Doom, Sunshine Chapter. Fred McJagger and his beleaguered residents of Vista Isles. Mo Grenadine. And let's not forget the world's worst drug cartel! Throw into this mix a suitcase with $5 million in cash and you get a novel that's some bizarre emulsion of a Monty Python sketch, Clerks, Pulp Fiction and "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World"! The inference that this novel is remiscent of Hiaasen is a very nice sentiment and well deserved. However, Tim Dorsey is a writer of his own unqiue style of prose and humor. I EAGERLY await "Hammerhead Ranch Motel"!
Rating: Summary: This should be made into a movie Review: I haven't read a more enjoyable book in years. The characters and locale descriptions are all so real. Mr. Dorsey is an excellent writer in the way he takes so many characters doing all sorts of different wierd things and finally brings them all together. In my opinion the story isn't too busy, it's fast paced, exciting and hysterical. I could totally associate with the characters. I also never want to go to Florida after reading it! I had a hard time putting the book down. The entire time I was reading it I thought actress Sarah Jessica Parker would be perfect to play the role of Sharon. Ha! She's perfect! I highly recommend this book, especially if you liked the movie Pulp Fiction.
Rating: Summary: Better than Flipper! Review: Anyone who fails to find Florida Roadkill less than one of the most brilliant Florida novels ever has the attention span of the moron sitting in the White House.Dorsey's first book and all others are gems.Serge Storms has to be the first psycopant I am rooting for as compared to the ones in D.C. nowadays.
Rating: Summary: Left me laughing for hours... Review: I could NOT put "Florida Roadkill" down. If you like sardonic humor with a Florida kind of twist, this book is the one to read. Pretty gruesome ways to die in the book, too, but you know, if you don't like that sort of thing, you can forgive Tim Dorsey for that when the characters themselves have you laughing. This is the kind of book that requires a weird sense of humor to enjoy it... and for people like me that actually LIVE in Tampa, we can just SEE all of this stuff happening. lol Worth the money, and one of the few books I'd call off work for in order to kick back and have a great laugh.
Rating: Summary: Awful Review: I tried my best to get through this book, but it was awful. After reading half of it, I was wondering what plot the writer had in mind as it seemed to ramble through the different characters with no point in site. I was very disappointed with the style and have read a lot of the "Florida" author's books, but this doesn't compare favorably with Hiassen, Buchanan, Shames or Corcoran. Read works of some of these authors instead.
Rating: Summary: Hiassen on speed. Review: If you love Carl Hiassens book. Put on a seat belt and pick up Tim Dorsey. This novel is energetic and very funny, you will not want to put it down. It tells the story of various lives of people who life seems to place (or they do) in strange predictamnets. These carzies exploits take them throughout Florida from my home county with Satellite Beach and Cocoa Beach, on down south on both coast, and doesn't stop till we hit the Dry Tortugas. I look at it as a very zany, violent, bizzarro tour of Florida. That is extremely acurate as far as historical and geographical facts. And some other things, which you would never believe unless you lived in South Florida. And if you do you know his books are close to home. Who ever thought I would be looking forward to see what Serge, the anti-hero would do next. And I guess I really enjoy the fact that I have been to almost every placed described, and was even at the same world series game as the main characters.....
Rating: Summary: Surprisingly good Review: I had never heard of Tim Dorsey before reading this book, so I wasn't expecting too much. But I was pleasantly surprised, this was a fun book to read. The story is great, as long as you can keep up with the author's frenetic pace. The characters are well-developed and hilarious. I found myself laughing out loud at several points in this book. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a laugh, and especially if you live in Florida.
