Rating: Summary: No skinny legs, but certainly fat thumbs.... Review: While this book may not reach the high water mark set by Skinny Legs and All, Even Cowgirls Get the Blues is certainly it's equal in terms of length of title. The characters are compelling, moreso the female than male, which is the way it so rarely is, especially when written by a male writer. A word about the sex: if I was reading any other author, and this much sex was bantered about, I would honestly wonder how frustrated a person he or she is. But with Tom Robbins, it just all seems to fit, and I found myself laughing where no decent person would be laughing, and enthralled the whole way through. Kudos to you Tommy R!
Rating: Summary: Volitile and exiting, worth every mind expanding second!!!! Review: Tom Robbins uses the page as his personal playground once again, he ignores chronilogical order and metaphoric congruency and turns out hyperbolic charecters which contrast with each other nicely. most readers will hate his goofiness, but those with a sissy Hankshaw spirit will find their soulmate in this beautiful hitchhiker of souls. I advise to get all of the books written by tom Robbins, and read one each year, so you don't take yourself too seriously. and never forget that Tom Robbins is a sweet gift given to those who don't resort to describing his works with phrases like "aweful: and "sucked".
Rating: Summary: Yahoo! Review: This *is* the Great American Novel. Read everything by Tom Robbins you can get your hands on.
Rating: Summary: You won't leave this book the same Review: This book isn't for everyone, but anyone who likes a playful author who knows how to write wonderfully and can keep an open mind about life and living... should love this book. Either way you won't put it down being the same. My girlfriend began to read this book and instantly she was hooked. Everyday she would quote to me from it, talk about theories and ideas Robbins brings up that ARE genuine through his humourous and whimsical charachters and plot. They're unrealistic, yes... but that's what makes this delightful genious as opposed to dry theory. I bought this book to try to keep up to the new doors it was opening in my girlfriend's mind and it has just never been the same. His insights on life, religion, truth, time, and perhaps simply BEING ALIVE... are beautifully introduced and made to be entertaining and powerful. Don't get hung up on the sex scenes or the lesbian issues. It's not a porno and it's not about being a lesbian. Read this book with an open and QUESTIONING mind and laugh at the silly people in it and the things they do as the masterful theories explode like fireworks on the page. Anyone who gave this book 1 star simply didn't understand it, and maybe it wasn't for them. But if you let these ideas touch you and learn to question them... you won't just put it down and go pet your cat. You'll want to go make love to the horizon. It's beautiful stuff.
Rating: Summary: terrific.... Review: I knew it was a good book, because by the time I had finished it I had experienced every emotion a book could possibly make me feel. I loved some of these characters, hated others, I laughed, I cried, I read on in horror, disappointment, rage, elation, and pure estatic joy. The pure music of Robbins's words carried me out of this world and into a world of magic and poetry. Even after the first few pages, I had learned that all I had to do was toss a thumb in the air and I could hitch a ride to a place where I could learn a little bit more about the world around me and be completely enchanted in the process. I'm glad I was able to find my way to the clockworks. I have run across very few authors that have the same love of language Robbins does. I applaud this book loudly and recommend it to everybody... not just the aspiring cowgirl. It's philisophical content is inspiring.
Rating: Summary: A philosophical and comedic masterpiece of literature Review: For those willing to stretch their minds and open their senses, _Even Cowgirls Get the Blues_ is esctasy in the highest form. It contains all the requirements of a modern classic: intellagence, wit, and a perfect combination of silliness and stark reality.
Rating: Summary: Best book I ever read, (and worst movie I ever saw) Review: In my opinion, Robbins is a literary genius, but it takes time to fully comprehend his style of writing. It's funny reading the rest of these reviews, I guess it prooves that either you love hate him. I can not even fathom how he comes up with what he does, but I cought myself reading the same paragraph over and over just to let it sink in. 5 stars! (I also heard the Robbins has all of these followers who camp out on his lawn as if he were Elvis!!)
Rating: Summary: Philosophy in bite size pieces & sprinkled with funny sauce Review: TR is a fantastic writer. Not fantastic in the literary sense like Dickens or Melville, but fantastic in a more popular sense. The man can spin a yarn. What imagination he has. It's all unbelievable fiction but that doesn't hinder the enjoyment one bit. He manages to mingle fantasy, philosophy, and plot in the sweetest way. The characters are so compelling. And I found myself laughing out loud at least once every 1/2 hour. Read it and laugh!
Rating: Summary: aaaaaaaaawwful!!!! Review: Tom Robbins is a pig. Not only do I hate the way he writes about women, I feel he has an attitude about it. His repetitive cutesy prose is bothersome when you read a Robbins book for the first time, and by the time you read this book you can barely finish. And what's with his drawn out sex scenes that don't seem to add or take away anything from the characters! I hope people do not compare his fiction with true literature.
Rating: Summary: chika boom boom boom Review: I loved it all, right down to the last little peyote button. The les\gay\girl love thing doesn't bother me one iota, insofar as whatever floats your boat, but I always associated it with a certain amount of underlying ickiness(the physical part)- The cowgirls helped me immensely, not to say that I find the lifestyle any more personally appealing, but I can finally see it as sweet- no less pure than any other kind of lust. Now I just have to work through my feelings about Sissy and the Chink- the age difference thing completely grosses me out, like makin' it with grandpa or something. Aside from that one rather personal hang-up, I say drop out of life for a few days because once you start reading you won't be able to stop. (please note: possible tom robinson(to kill a mockingbird) allusion in Jelly Bean? just wondering.)
