Summary: Finally...
Review: I first read 'End of the World' in high school and fell in love with its casual inclusion of sex, drugs and modern characters. When I really began reading/writing and wanted to reread this book, I was on a wild hunt for a few years as it had gone out of print...and now this book has gone back into active publication. I will admit that I am biased towards contemporary fiction; it is my preferred genre. Michael Cunningham is destined to become one of the most recognized writers of our time, "contemporary"or not.

Employing a wonderfully lyrical style, Cunningham waltzes through several decades and lives. You leave his final pages only to turn to the first ones and begin again.

Good GOD buy this book.

:) happy reading

Summary: wonderfully expressive
Review: A home at the end of the world is liberating. How foolish we've been to apologize for our selfishness. Yet I do think that for Cunningham writing has a higher purpose than literature. Is it moral for him? I think some critics have been right to label him "populist" - if there's something called "universal voice" he's gifted with it. His prose is as light as pure essence.

I was a bit disappointed with his "Flesh and Blood" but can't wait to read his "The Hours." One of my favourite writers. To me he's like Greenaway and Kundera and Kushner who also see beauty in very idiosyncratic, contemporary contexts without losing connection with the timeless humanity.

Summary: A Work of Sensitive Genius
Review: Was it Yeats who said that "When all the living's done, it's poems that remain"? Well, I think he forgot to add one more thing: novels by Michael Cunningham.

Summary: Beautifully written. You will not forget this book.
Review: I thought this book was like poetry. Mr. Collins has a way to describe emotions we feel like no other author I have ever read. The only downfall of the book is it gets a little slow at the end; but all in all, I will treasure the memory this book has provided me with. I applaud Collins for describing a 90's family in the best of terms.

Summary: Change how you look at family relationships permanently!
Review: I first read this book in 1992 and have been loaning it out ever since, however, I never seem to get it back and have bought numerous copies to replace my original. I have yet to find someone that did not profoundly enjoy this book. You will laugh, cry, get frustrated with characters' behavior at times. You will want to be a part of this haphazard family. You will be able to relate to all of the characters at some point of the story. Try to decide which actors you think should play them if a movie were to be made- it's impossible to decide! This is my all time favorite book; I read it once a year. I wish Michael Cunningham's other works held up to this one!

Summary: Depression at its finest!
Review: 'The Hours' allowed me to find Michael Cunningham, and it's hard to let him out of one's life. With 'A Home at the End of the World' he has evoked a lyrical whirlwind of exquisite characters caught in the most depressing aspects of life's offerings - only to blast one through it all to a hope and a cause, bringing a swelling of the chest if not a small tear to the eye. If I thought 'The Hours' overwhelmed me, I knew nothing until I reached that home at the end of his world. In other words, it's incredible - buy it and read it!!

Summary: A masterpiece....... not to be missed!
Review: The book sweeps you up in the world of the brilliantly drawn characters, and you don't want it to end. Part of the strength of Cunningham's writing is that there are no "good" or "bad" characters. They are all wonderfully human, and each of them has traits which we all share to one degree or another. So while you may find yourself identifying more with one character or another, each of them is recognizable and likeable. The book is a masterpiece that will send you back to the bookstore for his other works. This man is a highly gifted author whose prose delights the reader at every turn.

Summary: Exquisite Prose Not to Be Missed
Review: Michael Cunningham is, without a doubt, one of the finest living writers we have. His exquisite use of the language, his mind-boggling insights and his complex character developments make this novel a must-read for anyone looking for quality contemporary fiction. Also check out his most recent award winner, "The Hours," as well as "Flesh and Blood." Add him to your library at once. You will have an incredible journey no matter which of his works you choose. Aspiring fiction writers take note: no class or teacher can give you this sort of technique. Read and learn! Enjoy!

Summary: Quite wonderful.
Review: I was simply blown away by this book. I've never read a book that described life and the heart and the frailty of life, love, and interconnectedness in this way. I was frightened through most of it, crying through some of it, but never stopped feeling that Mr Cunningham was whispering something very important to us as I turned the pages. It's haunting. I find myself wanting to check on on the lives of the characters in the book.
