I tried to get into it, but Green's characters weren't developed enough to keep my interest. Read Last Chance Saloon by Marian Keyes instead. Seems like the same storyline, but so much better!
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Jane Green is a Must Read Author!! Review: I thought this was just another wonderful book by Jane Green. She is definately a must read for me. The binding friendship in this story truely warms your heart. I can see great possibilities of a Hugh Grant movie here (although I'm not certain what character would best suit him). The book was not as predictable as many are. And I think that is what I like about Jane Green. It's a story of people in a life situation and could continue on. She writes about real people situations and feelings and when the book is finished I am left feeling good and wishing for more. I love British authors!
Rating: ![3 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-3-0.gif) Summary: Not a bad way to spend your reading time Review: This book has some mechanical problems (ie. she keep throwing in things about the characters that were supposed to be old habits, but had never been mentioned before) but overall, the story wasn't bad. I still feel that Mr. Maybe was her best book, just because of the lively conversational tone the main character maintained throughout the book. While this book is written in first person, you wouldn't always remember that. It isn't the best effort Jane Green has done, but it is worth reading. I laughed and cried...crying is a first for me regarding a Jane Green novel, so it has it's moments of warmth and good writing. Take it to the beach, enjoy.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Kept me reading Review: I have read two of her other books, and I am in love with this one. This one had be going from cover to cover. It was diffrent from her other two books I have read, but it was good. A real page turner. It made me laugh, cry, and I was shocked. I could but myself in everyones shoes. It was wonderful. I highly recomend it for anyone and her other two books.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Bookends - By Jane Green Review: My first impression of this book was the usual "oh lord, another one of these icky romances" but as I got more involved.. of course, after the fact that I had no idea what was happening at the beginning, everyone being thrown into the first two pages of the book. As the story went along I developed relationships with everyone. (yes, even Max). This book was magnificent! Made me laugh, cry, frown all good and bad things :) but all meant for this book! I just wish that some of Ms. Green's books were also US printed... I loved this book! I think it's her best yet! (out of "Jemima J" and "Mr Maybe") I recommend this to anyone who loves a quick and easy romance read.
Rating: ![2 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-2-0.gif) Summary: Not her best effort Review: This is the third JG novel I've read and I was disappointed. The characters were so cliched I spent most of the book thinking this was a deliberate set-up by the author, that she was about to spring something wonderful or awful out of left field and was just lulling me into a stupor so I wouldn't be expecting it. Nope. If someone asked me to predict the ending - would Lucy and Josh stick it out? Would Portia be embraced back into the group? What would happen with gay Si? Would Cath and James end up together? - I could easily answer all those questions - and so can you. The bad guys were just so soap-opera bad that I couldn't suspend my disbelief no matter how hard I tried - they may as well have been wearing a curly black Villian moustache and a black cape and reading off a Melrose Place teleprompter. Ugh. And when she made one of the bad guys repent and cut her losses and become okay after all, it was with the most trite, 'my mom made me say this' dialogue and I spent the rest of the book not trusting anyone who would come out with such a prissy speech and then it was all wasted when her character was basically dropped. Anyway, so besides that, my other complaints were the huge number of loose ends to scowl over when you're done, and the characters she introduces in the beginning, describes, allows you to form a small relationship with and then are never heard about again. But on the good side, it's a fast read, it's totally mindless fiction (which is what we're all reading this stuff for, right?) and sometimes the Jane Green voice that I liked so much in Mr Maybe comes out and catches you by happy surprise. And I'm also always happy to read about some woman eating an entire danish with marzipan topping in one go and then having to fake that she'd eaten it over the course of a week. I do that a bunch.
Rating: ![1 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-1-0.gif) Summary: Take a pass! Review: Don't waste your time on this contrived, predictable story that feels like a rehash of the sitcom, "Friends." (The story is not as funny or engaging as the TV show!) The storyline revisits old territory I consider more relevant and engaging to life in the early 1990's. For life in 2002, it's predictable, trite and out-of-step. I'm suspicious. To capitalize on Green's growing success in the field of "singleton stories," did her publisher "resurrect" material that was written many years ago?
Rating: ![3 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-3-0.gif) Summary: Good, but could have been better Review: I am a big fan of Jane Green and I couldn't wait for this book to come out. I was a bit disappointed. It just wasn't what I thought it would be. I love Jemima J and Mr. Maybe, but this was a bit different. It was still a good story and I would recommend it.
Rating: ![3 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-3-0.gif) Summary: not very engrossing Review: As a fan of Jane Green, I was very excited to read her new novel, Bookends. I have to say I was very disappointed with it. What started out promising at the beginning with a plot and intriguing characters, turned into an essay on dealing with the seriousness of an STD. Without giving too much away, I couldn't help but think she wrote this because of some sort of personal crisis. While I feel she tried to do a good thing by educating her readers, I feel it really diverted from the fun that I usually expect from the author. The main point of the book, being Portia's return, was very lost and what should have been a very lighthearted, twist turning, fun plot got off track and became very morose and whiny. I didn't really feel attached to Cath as I did to Libby, the protagonist in Mr. Maybe. I felt very detached from all the characters. While I won't say this novel was horrible, I will just say it didn't come close to her previous novels. I do look forward to her next novel because I think she has a great wit that shouldn't be hidden in subplots that try educate the readers on something so serious.
Rating: ![1 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-1-0.gif) Summary: Don't bother with this one Review: I have read all of Jane Green's books and have enjoyed them all. Except for this one. This book is poorly written with Green refering to her characters by "my darling" "my love" and "my sweets" just ONE TOO MANY TIMES for my liking. The book, in my opinion, is totally predictable. Green does attempt to throw in some plot twists at the end but does such a poor job of working the twists into her writing, that it comes across as being unthought out. Read Bridget Jones again, don't bother wasting your time on this one.
