Rating: Summary: VERY light and superficial Review: I was disappointed by the book. Amazon readers recommended it for lovers of Marian Keyes's books, but does not even come close to hers. The characters are one-dimensional, the plot is predictable and the language is unimaginative. A loss of time, IMHO.
Rating: Summary: The Best Jane Green Book Review: This book has shown that Jane Green has matured as a writer. The plot is deep and rich. Her characters are realistic and people I would have as my friends. Buy this book either from Amazon USA or the original format from Amazon UK. It is as funny as Jemina J, but more complete as a novel. I wish I could give it six stars. Ignore any negative reviews on this book
Rating: Summary: Entertaining, great story Review: A long time ago, I wrote that I didn't care much for Jane Green, especially after reading Jemima J. I gave her another chance with Mr. Maybe (was SO glad I did!) and again with Bookends (I was SO glad I did again!).Bookends is Jane Green's best novel to date!! It's about a group of 30-somethings and their relationships with one another and others that come in and out of their lives. It will keep you intrigued from beginning to end...at some points you may laugh and even cry as I did... Enjoy!
Rating: Summary: Definitely some twists & turns, but not Green's best Review: I loved Jemima J. by Green because it was a breezy, fun, heartwarming, and engaging romance, so I was thrilled to check out Bookends. Unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed with Bookends because while it is a nice, easy read, it is not a story about lovers. If you're looking for a page-turner about whimsical romances, this isn't the one to pick. I do give Green thumbs up for twists and turns in the plot. She definitely caught me off guard, which is refreshing, because Jemima J. was pretty predictable. Green does a nice job of tying everything up in the end, but the first half of the book drags, in my opinion. I kept saying, "OK but . . . where is this going?" Still, if you're a fan of Green, Bookends is worth the read; afterall, it's a story of friendships---the good and the bad---with interesting surprises, too.
Rating: Summary: great story...but then... Review: I enjoyed this book for the most part until I was two-thirds of the way done. It suddendly turned into a book about something completely different than I expected. I felt like I read two different books. What happened towards the end became such a major part of the book that everything else was forgotten about. I would have liked to have seen Cath's relationship with James explored more and to have heard more of the daily life of the bookstore. The storyline that came out of the blue is the main reason for 3 rating.
Rating: Summary: Jane Green hits again! Review: This book is an incredible read! I've become an avid Jane Green fan after reading Jemima J and Mr Maybe but this book ranks right up there with them! (I dare say maybe even above) It's a great story of love, old friends, dreams, and devastations. I literally cried at the end of this book and that always signifies amazing writing. I couldn't put it down. Green always writes such vivid characters with wonderful storylines. She continues to be witty and charming in her writing. Not to mention, the epitome of english humor. Love it, you should buy it, you won't be let down!
Rating: Summary: I LOVE JANE GREEN - but BOOKENDS was PATHETIC Review: As for my background with Jane Green - I thoroughly enjoyed reading both Jemima J and Mr. Maybe in 2 days (you know how it is, you just cant put it down!) and I've been anticipating Bookends' arrival since early in the year. Just got back from Japan the other day, and read it last night - IT WAS SHOCKING! I hated it - the style was Jane Green, but it just lagged, and was boring, and sometimes I felt like closing the damn thing - now we all know thats a little odd cosidering its a Green book. Oh well - I just would NOT recommend this, but Green's others, I would in a heartbeat!!!!!!! DONT READ THIS BOOK
Rating: Summary: Not Green's best, but still entertaining Review: If this is the first time you have heard of Jane Green, do not read this book first. Green has also written Jemina J, a hilarious book with some serious issues such as eating disorders and self esteem, and Mr. Maybe, a book that made me laugh out loud and love all the characters. Mr. Maybe is just for fun, it is not preachy at all. Of Green's prior two books that I have read, Bookends is closer to Jemina J than Mr. Maybe. There are times when reading Bookends that I wasn't sure if I were reading a funny Brit novel or a pamphlet from the health department. While there are moments that are extremely funny, it is not a book that will keep you laughing at all times. However, I did read the book in one day because I kept waiting for something to happen. If you want to laugh, read Mr. Maybe. If you want to love a character who finds herself, read Jemina J. If you just want to pass a few hours, read this book.
Rating: Summary: Not Green's best Review: I rushed to get this novel from Amazon.UK when I first heard about it. I have read all of Jane Green's other novels that are published in the USA and have loved them. Well, this one did not live up to my expectations. As someone who's dream it is to open a book store, I was hoping that this book would be a light, tender read just like Green's others. I was expecting it to be primarily about two women opening up the store. But I found that this was just a small part of a much bigger, much less enjoyable story. The idea was top notch, but the follow through was mediocre at best. The characters were all likeable, albeit not too deep aside from one catastrophic event that I will not give away. The plot (or plots) never developed for me, and I was left disatisfied in the end. I would love to read more from Jane Green, but hope that this was just one glitch in an otherwise perfect writing career.
Rating: Summary: Brit Chick Lit at its best! Review: About the highest praise I can give this book is that it read just like a Marian Keyes novel. Told by Cath, the story focuses on a core group of thirtysomething friends who have been together since their days at university. Missing from the group, however, is their friend Portia who back in the university days was the center of the group. After an ugly incident she is ousted and looses touch with the others who years later find themselves remembering her, wondering what she is doing and how their lives would be different if she were back with the gang. They all get their wish when Portia shows up at the opening of "Bookends" the bookstore/cafe opened by Cath and Lucy. Lucy is the wife of Josh, one of the core group of friends who was desparately in love with Portia in college. Signals and messages get mixed and crossed and a delightful read insues once Portia is thrust back in to the lives of Cath and her friends. In the end everything gets worked out and you have a nice happy tale of friendship with a little touch of romance thrown in. What more could you want out of a summer read?
