Summary: Forced to read a good book: what a problem!
Review: If you stopped and thought about what exactly it is that you are complaining about maybe you wouldn't be complaining at all. Is it the fact that one of the most complete, most respected pieces of work from one of greatest men to ever pick up a pen is not full of flashing lights, hard hitting bass beats, and hot steamy kisses? Is it the fact that you were made to think, that someone cares about your intelligence enough to wrench you away from your Rogue Spear or your Instant Messeging just long enough to see that people could sit, enthrawled and trapped by their lust for something fourty years before CD-ROMs? If you hated reading The Old Man and the Sea, if it was a torturous task indeed, go deep sea fishing for giant marlin with nothing but the same heroism, heart, and primitive tools your ancestors have been using since the creation of man. What do you plan to do? Do you think billions of people will still know your work and still celebrate your birth almost 40 years after you die? In case the cliff's notes didn't say so, Hemingway is still one of the most celebrated creatures to ever walk. So I hope your little brain doesn't ache so badly after being forced to think and contemplate something farther away than a monitor you would have to go 12 hours without jumping back online to pretend you are doing something important. And I certainly hope you will never be forced into such a horrid position, one in which you will be forced to appreciate, or at least tolerate not being flakey and shallow for just long enought to read a 130 page book.

Summary: Not as bad as my fellow teenagers make it seem to be
Review: This novel is not my favorite, and it is not(in my opinion) my favorite Hemmingway novel; however, after reading all the worthless reviews by other high school students, I knew I had to make a comment. This novel is a brilliant story about a man's personal victory. It is also an ingeniously analogous to Jesus Christ's struggle. The only reason I gave it four stars is because I got bored the second time I read it. Did you kids even pay attention in your english classes?

Summary: Not everyone is ready for this book
Review: I certainly was not ready for this book in junior high. I was in absolute agony when I had to read this book for my English class. But when I went back to read the book a couple of years later, I was shocked at the beauty of the book, especially since I am not a fan of Hemingway. I would say this is one of Hemingway's finest books, but I guess you really have to be in a certain frame of mind to appreciate this book. It's a shame that kids who can't fully grasp the meaning of this book are forced to read this book and end up getting turned off by this wonderful book. The book, despite its simple language, is deceptively comples and mature.

Summary: This Book got a Nobel Prize?
Review: I was forced to read this book in reading class. I found it to be a long book about nothing. Half of the time the book talked the old man's wandering thoughts which had almost nothing to do with the story. And my teacher told us that every thing that happened to Santiago was related to Jesus's crusifiction. I could see that in some areas, but in others it seemed far feched.

Summary: Ummmm....Not my favorite book EVER!
Review: This book was not on my favorite list at all. I was forced to read it for english and all it did was frustrate me. I think that kids cant relate to it as much. Mabey if i wait until i am older and then i read it again i will appreciate it. But obviously someone thought this book was good if Hemmingway can get a Nobel Prize. And i can see why in soom ways. I just think this isnt good reading material for high school students.

Summary: I actually fell asleep!
Review: i actually fell asleep reading this book & it wasn't even 3 a.m. & I wasn't even tired! The book was so boring. the story seemed to drag on. Nothing kept my interest. It's horrible how high school English teachers force students to read this book--cuz this may very well cause young people to NEVER pick up another book ever again!

Summary: Old Man and the Sea sends a deep message
Review: The Old Man and the Sea is one of my all-time favorites. I love the contrast between the simplistic writing style and the deep message that Hemingway sends. I believe The Old Man and the Sea is about much more than an old man and his fishing tale. The Old Man and the Sea is a story about life and the victories and struggles it entails. Around the bend, after every defeat is a victory waiting to be tasted, and then another defeat will follow, and so on and so forth - the story of life. I first read this book over three years ago and I still find my mind wondering back to it every now and then. When I am faced with challenges and struggles, I think back to The Old Man, and I am reminded -- it is life.

Summary: In this corner, a 1500 pound Marlin...
Review: My fiancée hated this book; she told me it nothing but fish and machismo - futility personified as a short novel. After absorbing the story, I cannot agree with her. While it may appear to be nothing but a fight between an old man and a big fish, it is more. It is struggle. It is pain and perseverance. It is the acknowledgment that sometimes defeats look like victories, and victories defeats. That being said, I can now also say that I am not a fan of Hemingway's choppy writing, his overly overt masculinity, or his cavalier attitudes towards death and pain. But it is worth reading, especially if you like the things do not.

Review: The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway, I thought, was very well written. I thought he described the events of the man's adventure at sea vividly with exciting detail. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who loves to read the classics.

Review: A timeless short story for everyone. Fans of stories like The Triumph and the Glory or The Testament will like this book. People who liked The Reader or Memoirs of a Geisha will like this book. People who liked Stones From the River or The Pilot's Wife will like this book It has everything one could ask of fiction. A vast range and scope of human emotion and experience is encapsulated into The Old Man and the Sea, in a very eloquent manner. Don't miss this one, it is Hemingway's best and it is unforgettable.
