Rating: Summary: The Truth Is The Light!!! Review: This book was awesome!! I have read all of Ms. Roby's books and they are superb!! In her last novel, Too Much Of A Good Thing, she takes a realistic view of what is happening in a large number of churches in today's society. It is truly sad that some pastors and churches are not in to saving souls, which is truly the mission of the church, but they are into gaining monetary funds for material items. The novel centers around Rev. Curtis Black, who is Satan in the pulpit trying to lead his flock straight to hell. Rev. Black is weak in the spirit and the flesh and uses the church and his wife for his own personal gains. There are some officers and members of the church who are on to Rev. Black's schemes and put a stumbling block in his way to prevent the demise of the church. Ms. Roby does an excellent job conveying to individuals that you are to serve the one and only God and not man!! I hope readers will gain knowledge from this book that they may use and apply to their own church life. -reviewed by Leyonta Sears for www.avid-readers.com
Rating: Summary: Sleeping Dogs Do Lie Review: TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THING by Kimberla Lawson Roby is the much-anticipated sequel to CASTING THE FIRST STONE.Curtis Black is back with a vengeance. This time he has a brand new wife-Mariah and a new church. Things appear to be perfect, until lust causes Curtis to do some crazy things. Curtis is so busy trying to sneak behind his wife's back; he neglects his daughter, Alicia. Alicia is vulnerable and sensitive. Will Curtis lose his daughter over his own selfishness? Mariah thought she had the picture-perfect marriage. Not only is her husband handsome, he's also the head pastor at a growing church. Once her rose colored glasses are taken off, she feels stuck in a loveless marriage. Will Mariah leave Curtis or stay in the marriage out of obligation? The story is comical in parts as Curtis tries to manipulate the women from his past and present. It's a brand new day, but he's still up to his old tricks-lying and sleeping around on his wife and girlfriend. He goes as far as trying to manipulate the deacons of the church. Will the deceit ever end? Ms. Roby touches on a taboo subject that will sure get tongues to wagging. TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THING is entertaining to the very last page. Shelia M. Goss The Literary Cafe
Rating: Summary: Too Much Is Not Enough Review: Very seldom are sequels up to the same level as the first one and I usually try and keep in mind that the story may go into a new direction. Sequels are stories that are somewhat new or new to the reader because it is the telling of events unknown heretofore. Considering all that, this book still didn't work. The story was painfully formulaic, predictable, and lacked realism. The characters had no depth, and the dialogue was torturous. One star is too much to give this book.
Rating: Summary: Sizzling Hott & Scandulous Review: Kudos to you - Ms. Roby I have read ALL of your publications and they just seem to get better and better. I love the richness of the characters - I can almost close my eyes and see them. In a word - Awesome... So phoine adulterous Curtis Black is back, huh? Who "thunk it..." I would have thought he would have learned his lesson - 5 years ago. Adrienne what are you thinking...? Love struck - hun? This thing is obviously too much for you! What I am finding most impressive is the author's perception on the church and the powerful leaders that rule them. Casting the first Stone and now this book really will make someone say "hmmmm" about the Pastors in some of these churches. The details shared with the readers are so real and vivid - just seems to true to be fiction. I will continue to support and purchase these novels - I chew them up and spit them out in a matter of a day or two. A great escape from the mundane ness of life. Keep up the good work - my beret off to you! pjm from phabulous philly
Rating: Summary: Mo Betta - Mo Betta - Mo Betta!!!! Review: Girls - listen this book is totally worth ALL THE DIMES that you have to spend to get it. Now you have to read Casting the First Stone before reading this one to get the true "madness" of all of this church mess. I read the book in a day and a half....couldn't put it down. I am not one to give you the details of the book...I just want to let you know Curtis is a MAD FOOL! hahahahaha No - he hasn't learned a thing...and the self-righteousness of this man is unreal. I don't know who Kimberly had to talk to or where she had to go for her research but .... there is no way she doesn't know of a Curtis Black somewhere is real life. LOL Like another reader said...this book doesn't disappoint in the least....it just gets mo betta! This is a good one...but then again...with Kimberly's talent for writing I didn't expect anything less... Girl - you are simply BRILLIANT!!! I got a feeling we might just see this man again...............
Rating: Summary: A Price to Pay for the Choices You Make Review: I could say that kimberla Lawson Roby is a storyteller at the top of her game but her readers already know that. "Too Much of a Good Thing" like all of Kimberla's books, deals with serious real life issues. Kimberla shows the desperate plight of women who will do anything to get (as they think) or stay with a man regardless of the consequences. She points out the fact that a womanizer's apetite is never satified. And his greedy, controlling, agressive behavior does not stop at women. Kimberla clearly shows this with the character of Curtis Black. What captured my attention is when a woman do a low, self-esteemed belly roll--like Adrienne and Mariah--to get (as they think) or stay with a man, he treats her accordingly. She has no respect for herself and he shows her no respect. His respect and tolerance of her is lower than the belly roll she did to get him. He know that he can do anything he wants to her: lie, cheat, disrespect and abuse her because he knows that she will stoop to any level to keep him. Therefore he continues in his ways until he is self-entrapped or his world crumbles around him. He too, gets his coming downs. As a parent raising teenagers: "Too Much of a Good Thing" should give all parents a wake-up check about who their children are talking to on the internet. It brings to focus that parents should never over busy themselves with the demands of a job and today's busy world that they are not aware of what their children are doing whether it is on the internet or otherwise. When children get on the wrong track, I personally believe that love and the presence of God in their lives give parents a chance to win their children back. This message is potrayed in "Too Much of a Good Thing." Kimberla plainly shows that there is a price to pay for the choices we make. "Too Much of a Good Thing" is an outstanding read.
Rating: Summary: REVEREND BLACK IS BACK!! Review: Yes, in this sizzling sequel to her bestselling novel "Casting The First Stone," the Reverend Curtis Black is back....with a vengance! Set five years after the ending of the first novel, Curtis Black has once again been appointed pastor (believe it or not,) of Faith Missionary Baptist Church. Newly married, Curtis vows to do it better the second time around. With new wife Mariah, a new church and a handsome six-figure salary, it does appear as though the reverend has made a comeback. However, it's not long before Curtis gets restless...soon he seeks out his old lover Adrienne Jackson, and the affair is on again. He once again promises to leave his current wife to marry Adrienne, and together they vow to begin divorce proceedings against their respective spouses within six months. Then Adrienne becomes too demanding, and Curtis takes a chance on contacting Charlotte--the underage teenager from his old church with whom he had not only an affair but an illegitimate child--and promises her also that he will leave his wife and marry her. But the world once again begins to cave in when Adrienne becomes suspicious, tragedy strikes his daughter Alicia, and wife Mariah becomes aware of his illicit activities. It's not long before history seems to repeat itself--there's a letter to the deacons, a videotape, and an ending that the reader won't even begin to guess is coming......... Enjoyable to the very last page, Curtis Black remains the unbelievable reverend that we'll all need to pray for! Don't be surprised to see Reverend Black gracing the pages of a future work of Ms. Roby's...... DYB
Rating: Summary: Off the Chain - better than the first book! Review: Kimberla did a wonderful job with this one. It didn't remind you of a church story. It seemed like it was a book from Carl Weber or Zane it had so many twists and turns. That Pastor Black was off the chain!!!! Pastor Black still has not learned from messing up his first marriage. He is still a greedy ladies man. His daughter is older and resents him and he has alot of drama with her. It is just a trip. Please read it. I don't want to give the story away.
Rating: Summary: One Word: REPROBATE! Review: I just finished TMOAGT and I must say that these people are absolutely nuts. Curtis may have thought that Adrienne was crazy, but I actually thought that Adrienne had more sense than any of the other characters outside of Vivian. And then Tanya wasn't an idiot either but as my mother says, "bought sense is the best sense in the world." I'm glad Curtis got what was coming to him because I think he was on the verge of being crazy himself. Either Curtis Black is extremely magnetic towards weak women or he is just lucky. And the fact that he had so many "minister" friends just like him was appalling. NOBODY in this novel really knew the Lord or they would have been convicted, or hip to some of Curtis' nonsense. BUT I enjoyed the story and it was pretty good overall. Perhaps a taaaaaaaaad bit predictable but I kept on reading because I like Mrs. Roby's writing style.
Rating: Summary: Hell on flamin' wheels Review: I thought "Casting The First Stone" was jaw dropping but this one takes the cake. "Too Much of a Good Thing" picks up just where it's former left off. I didn't think I could be even more outraged with the blatant deception and down right immoral ways of the main character. To be honest, I couldn't put the book down. I read it practically from start to finish. This book is hot!!!!
