Summary: --An epistolary novel--
Review: ELLA MINNOW PEA is the masterpiece of a very creative mind. I approached this story thinking that perhaps the book was meant mostly for English majors or those individuals who just love words. I was right and also wrong. This is a very clever story filled with interesting word play that everyone can enjoy. It's also an imaginative fable that is told in the form of letters that are written in lovely prose.

The story takes place on the fictional island of Nollop that was named after Nevin Nollop, the author of a very famous pangram sentence. Mr. Nollop is revered by the islanders and most especially by the officials who are members of the town council. On the island there's a monument to honor Mr. Nollop and beneath it the famous pangram is printed. THE QUICK BROWN FOX JUMPS OVER THE LAZY DOG. One day the letter Z falls of the word LAZY and as time passes more letters continue to fall from the monument. The council members decide that the voice of Nevin Nollop is speaking to them from the grave and telling them to discontinue the usage of the fallen letters. Severe penalties are issued to the islanders if they use any of the forbidden letters in dialog or in print.

Most of the residents think that taking letters out of the alphabet is ridiculous, but since the penalties are harsh; they try to obey the new laws. As time passes, the people become desperate and begin to look for a way out of the miserable repression that had become their lives.

This book was very entertaining and it was also amusing to see the various words that people would come up with in their messages to one another. For instance, when many of the letters that would be used to spell chicken were forbidden, a man wrote a note to his friend thanking her for "the thermos of pullet soup" that she had sent to him.

Summary: This one is a keeper
Review: Ella Minnow Pea is:

1). Whimsi*al

2). Qui*k

3). *lever

If you enjoy words, you'll like this book. And if laughter isn't enough, there's even a message for the serious: beware of too mu*h governmental *ontrol. Yes, this is a good one--*heck it out!

Summary: Zany Book with Vexed Ma, Pa and Girl Who Hope to Quickly
Review: Find Justice. There! Just thought I'd give it a try. This is a great novel that works on many levels, from the linguistic, analytical perspective to the suspenseful, quaint type of narrative to the terrifying, dystopian warning that all should heed and do everything in their power to prevent. If Louisa May Alcott wrote Fahrenheit 451, it would end up resembling Ella Minnow Pea.

Summary: Perfect novel for lovers of words
Review: For anyone who relishes the written word, here's a fantastically funny read. I'm so impressed with Dunn's clever plot and whimsical play of words. His characters are ridiculously gullible yet lovable. You don't have to be a linguist to appreciate the verbal acrobatics. This one's a keeper.

Summary: An awesome alphabetical adventure!
Review: For lovers of the alphabet and the words that can be created with those 26 letters, "Ella Minnow Pea" is a fabulous novel. The basic irony is that the novel is, indeed, a novel in letters of letters.

According to the book, Nevin Nollop was the creator of the famous typing sentence, "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog." I've done a little research online, and I'm fairly certain this person is fictional. However, the main character Ella doesn't seem the least bit fictional! She's a strong-willed, intelligent character, and as the novel closes, you will find her hoping for the best for her future on the island nation of Nollop.

Summary: A 'must read' for anyone who loves the English language.
Review: From the title right through to the fabulous climax, this epistolary tale will grab you and hold your attention. I'd call this one a 'must read', and a definite 'must lend' sort of book.

Summary: Communication Breakdown!?
Review: How often does anyone really use the letter Z anyway? When the letter is banned, Ella Minnow Pea seems willing to give up such a small freedom without truly realizing how it will affect her life and the lives of others on the island of Nollop.

What it lacks in depth of plot and character development, Ella Minnow Pea more than makes up for in originality. It turns out to be a quick read that is unique and even a bit thought provoking. I highly recommend this novel to all readers. If nothing else, the islander's attempts to communicate through the use of a rapidly diminishing alphabet will bring a smile to your face.

Summary: Supercalafragilistikexpialadocious!
Review: I loved it! I can't add anything that hasn't been said in the reviews before mine. I had to run for the dictionary too.
I received this book for Christmas and have passed the word on to others that rushed right out and bought a copy.

Summary: Actually better than 5 stars!
Review: I LOVED this book. I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked it up, and then I just couldn't put it down. I was reading passages to my husband and although he hates it when I do that, I couldn't resist. When I finished it, I went to the Amazon web page and ordered a copy for my son and my sister-in-law. I then put the book on my shelves that I have reserved for the books to read again. As a matter of fact, I have the paperback edition, I think I am going to need the hardback!
This book should be put on reading lists at high schools and colleges, it is that good. The discussions it could start, the ideas and thoughts it could open to so many people...enough, just take my word for it, this is a MUST read book.
By the way, I found that I needed a dictionary for the book and towards the end, I found it was much easier to read the letters out loud (not to my husband, just for me).Reading the letters out loud helped me understand them, so keep that in mind. What a fun, important book!
