Rating: Summary: The dilema of critizising reality through fiction Review: The theme of "Death of a Salesman" is interesting because it deals with the problems and the fate of individuals who become victims of "the American Dream". Arthur Miller takes the reader into the live and the situation of an apperently normal american family. Through this portrayal the author tries to give the Amrican Dream a verbal punch. There is little doubt that one of the main intetions is to criticize the American society and the American dream, and Arthur Miller does it well. But, as always in fictional books with a criticism of reality, the author's challenge is to make it credible to the reader. As a young,non- Amrican and not very experienced reader, I have problems with the credibelity of the main character Will, the Salesman who dies. It seems to me that it's not only the effect of the American Dream that bothers him, it looks to me as if he is mentally disturb as well. His act throughout the story appear too extrem to be true. Yes, he got problems, but it is far from big problems to suicide and in my opinion, this development goes to fast. I never felt that I knew the main character well enough to see how the faliure of "the American Dream" changed him. Suddenly he had a lot of problems and acted strange and irrational, which I find incredible, in negative way. I think the author should have used more space on describing the main character and get the reader closer to him. The story begins 20 pages to early. I have problems with the credibility of the critcism Arthur Miller tries to express, because to me the main character is just a figure in a book, not someone I could imagen in real life. The distance between fiction and reality is too big. For me.
Rating: Summary: An OK book about the american dream. Review: Death of a salesman is a book about the american dream. The american dream is all about beeing succesful and make a better life for yourself. Everybody wants to be famous, swin around in money and live a "easy" -if you could call it easy, life. This is also Willy Lomans dream, but I guess that is not going to happen... In my opinion Willy does not realy try to make it better, he tries to flee by killing himself and he can't even manage to kill himself, what more is there to say! Willy is a falure. As for the book I gave it 3 stars, if I could, I would give it 2,5 because I feel "blank". The book isn't good or bad, it's somewhere in between.. OK, I guess.
Rating: Summary: 51 years ago today. Review: This book serves as an excellent commentary on the falsity of the American Dream. Fed the propaganda of prosperity, every person believes they can make it in life, while most live out a modest existence. I give 4 stars because as a book it is not spectacular, but as a play, this work is brilliant. It's not a tongue-in-cheek satirical examination of insanity and lost hope. Instead, Miller grants us a bare-bones look at the psychological process of a man who's world falls apart because he puts too much importance on being 'well-liked'. Miller deftly examines the importance of charisma while providing for some values that we should all embrace; study, work, and love. What does this all come down to? Love accepts character flaws, but 'well-liked' doesn't.
Rating: Summary: Study of the the American Family Review: This is a dramatic play which criticizes the American society after World War II. It shows the problems of a family, especially the relation between father this hard period. It's about a salesman (Willy Loman), who hasn't any success any longer as he gets fired. He puts all his hopes in his two sons but they fail. The older (Biff) very strange past, because he hasn't had a job for longer then some months and he was in prison for some time. The younger brother of Biff (Happy) has a job, but he doesn't care about his father has and is more interested in women. The only hold for Willy is his wife Linda who always believes in him. The play has a very tragic end what depends on these difficult relations more and more the relation to the reality and dreams of "the good old da3 everything was nice. This hopeless situation finishes with the suicide of Willy. The play was quite difficult because of all the flashbacks into the past.
Rating: Summary: family tragedy Review: I liked to read this book. It's a story about a family who seems to be like a normal falmily but actually isn't. Thus it's the father, who is a salesman, who wants the family to have a good reputation. His goal is it to be well-like and to have lots of people coming to his funeral. He's hard working his whole life but still doesn't get this good reputation. he wants his two sons to be well-liked and well-know also. also the mother, who seems not to have a back role in the play, is pretty important because she is the one who tries to be real and see things how they are. but she tries to cheer people up, thus she wants her family to be happy. she wants everybody to get along in the family while her husband doesn't really care what's happening in the family itself but he wants other people to have good thoughts about his family.

Rating: Summary: Not the great book that everyone makes it out to be Review: I read this book and was disappointed with it.One of the reasons was that it was hyped to be a "classic". I forced myself to read to the end for two reasons. The first being that I thought maybe it was just a slow starter, that it would get better by the end.Secondly, because it was for english class so I really had no choice.I was bored by the schizoprehic plot.My only recommendation about this book is to read the Coles Notes when your teacher assigns it to you.It will save you the time that you will waste reading it.
Rating: Summary: Inside Willy Loman's head Review: Death of a Salesman is an intriguing and interesting play, centred around the life, and death, of failing salesman Willy Loman. A work in expressionism by Miller, the stage directions are precise and descriptive, bringing the concept of theatre to the pages of a book. Time changes, lighting and scenery are well used to carry the action between past, present and hallucinations and the relations of the characters are explored in detail through the actions and emotions of the characters. To really appreciate the beauty of this work, it is necessary to read it yourself.
Rating: Summary: Dealth of a saleman Review: this book is great..it demonstated our daily life and the suffocated live chasing for the unreality dreams
Rating: Summary: How can one not like this play! Review: I have read many of the reviews and i must wonder if they read the play. How can someone not fall in love with the play, much less, how can they not call it a tragedy. This play is about an average man, Willy Loman, who is caught up in the American Dream. He is disillusioned because he is too prideful to accept where he fits in society. The play shifts between the present and the past, and at times it may be confusing, but Willy's world is confusing, he does not know where he is. This play is an incredible piece of American writing, because it is the first true tragedy in a long time. WIlly's death is a tragedy, he is a tragic hero, and the play is incredible. I encourage all who read this commentary to read this play, it is one that people of all social classes and ages can relate to. GO READ THIS PLAY!
