Rating: Summary: Quite possibly the greatest novel ever written Review: This is the book that made me such a big fan of Ernest Hemingway's works. He is unrivaled in his descriptive style and his ability to make the reader see, hear, taste, smell, and feel everything he is experiencing at the time of writing. The story line is superb and gripping, yet it still takes a back seat to the supremely evocative style that defined Ernest Hemingway's career and place in literary history.
Rating: Summary: I loved this book! Review: I am 17 years old and I had to read this book for a report. At first I wasn't really excited to read it, and I wasn't expecting much because I hadn't heard much about it. But, once I got into the story I got pulled into it more and more. I absolutely love reading love stories, and this is much more than a love story. It is filled with excitement and many things that are true to life and really make you think about things. Even though I was forced to read this book, I am glad I did, and I would read it again just for pleasure.
Rating: Summary: Confusing, but interesting. Review: Though Ernest Hemingway does a fine job of coordinating events for the reader, it is difficult to follow the conversations between characters. At time surreal, some of the conversations plasticize the character, and some are just completely incomprehensible. Did people really ever talk that way to each other? I found the book mediocre for the most part, and I was able to follow along and keep up with the story, but couldn't get too excited about it. The ending, however, almost managed to pull the entire story together. It was a fabulous ending, not predictable at all until the last chapter or so. "Tenente's" ability to deal with everything so casually does seem a bit fantastic, but the ending saves this character from a life of dullness. Overall, the book did not leave me wanting to read any more of Mr. Hemingway's work. I would only recommend it during a reading slump, or when there is nothing else available.
Rating: Summary: This book was utterly moving and appealing to the senses. Review: I am a young reader only of 15, but I have to say that he really knows how to attract readers. Although conversation between Catharine and Henry was strange and confusing at times, it adds to the mystery of figuring out Hemmingway's thoughts as he wrote this book. It allows you to place yourself in every situation with explicit details of the surroundings. He never leaves out the littlest detail when it comes to describing every emotion, pain or hunger.
Rating: Summary: Romantic in a "guy" way Review: So its terse, what d'ya expect from Hemingway? The kinda book that makes you feel like having few drinks and enjoying them. Plot driven, so its doesnt get overly bogged down or preachy. Ultimately moving... Its probably the perfect length for a novel, three or four leisurely sittings. Can I be the millionth person to wonder at H's forward method...you know each sentence is there for a reason. Important and good.
Rating: Summary: I'm not in high school. I read literature. Review: Books like A Farewell to Arms, Lord of the Flies, and Catcher in the Rye tend to attract a lot of the "this is the best book ever written it was a really good look at what society is really like and it was a great love story" type of reviews. So I thought I'd throw some variety in here.AF2A is not a bad book. It is not the best novel of the 20th century. If you've already read Hemingway you'll know what to expect. I personally think this one was better than For Whom the Bell Tolls, but some readers will find the characters better developed in the latter work and enjoy it for that reason. I liked AF2A for the minimalism that Hemingway employs. He says more with less, and after reading some of the lesser lights of the pomo era, it's refreshing. Not as a steady diet though: it would be like surviving on bran flakes after gorging on cheesecake. I enjoy reading authors like Hemingway as a break from more demanding fare such as Gaddis. Hemingway is 11PM reading, that hour when your brain needs a rest but you don't feel like pulling out Elmore Leonard or Vonnegut. He's astute, undemanding, and I don't feel that I have wasted my time when I read him.
Rating: Summary: Where are the emperor's clothes? Review: I looked forward to reading this book but was very disappointed by its plodding clipped style. The dialogue between the 2(poorly developed) main characters is tedious and uninspired. The well touted passages about life at the front seemed to bog down in the mud that was being described. Maybe reading S-Faulk's "Birdsong" first, raised the bar of my expectations too high?
Rating: Summary: Great!!! Review: Although the love talk back and forth between Catherine Barkley and Henry becomes a little strange at sometimes; their love toward each other stays constant throughout the novel. Hemingway wrote a great book, fiction and a hint of autobigraphy of his expriences. I enjoyed reading this novel and I recomend it if one enjoys love stories.
