Review: Even if you're not a fan of contemporary Russian literature, you should read this novel. This translation seems extremely good, and is true to Bulgakov's original, but much revised, text. You should also read about the author and the history of this novel's creation. It's fascinating and will greatly enhance your reading experience.

Review: How do you know that you've read a great masterpiece? When after turning the last page of the book it feels like you just lost a great friend, whom you will never see again, and a sudden feeling of nostalgia floods your soul. ...When you find yourself breathless, in a deafening silence. I don't know any other book that I reread so many times as this one.

Summary: Excellent change of scenery from everyday american lit.
Review: I know little about the author of "The Master and Margarita", Mikhail Bulgakov, what I am farmiliar with is American Literature, and this is nothing like it. The difference in the focus is one of the main chararcters actully being the devil, but no evil seems to be involved, no real price is paid for this involvement Margarita has with him. The outcome does not seem to be affected in a negative way. This is a pleasant change of scenery from other stories.

Review: This translation is better than the Ginsburg and I've heard that the Gleny is awful. The book is, ofcourse, phenomenal on all levels, one of the best I've ever read (lighter, easier and in a sense deeper than most Gogol and Dostoevesky, almost on the level of Pushkin).

Review: Given other people's negative reviews of the Ginsburg translation, I ordered (I thought!) a different one, but Amazon provided me with the Ginsburg translation nonetheless. The English is stilted in places but I am enjoying it a great deal and look forward to making a comparison between this and another edition.

Summary: DON'T BUY THE GINSBURG TRANSLATION!!!
Review: Having recently completed this book as a part of a Russian Modernism class, I found that having the Mirra Ginsburg translation left me at a great disadvantage in discussions of this novel's intricate literary elements. I found that extremely important phrases were often translated so that they lost their intended meaning. At another point I found that entire sentences were omitted from this translation. The missing sentences (which were also very important to the plot) were instead replaced with "..." The translation that best captured all the literary elements we were discussing was a translation by Diana Burgin and Katherine Tiernan O'Connor. Unfortunately Amazon.com doesn't sell this one.

Review: Mikhail Bulgakov's Master and Margarita is by far the greatest novel I've ever read. Grotesque fantasy, lyricism and cutting satire; you'll find all this and more in this wonderful work of art.

Review: As a bilingual Russian/English speaker I would suggest that Mirra Ginsburg's translation (Published by Grove Press) is the closest to the original. Given the fact that I have been telling all of my friends to read this book and the fact that there are 4 translations out there, I actually tried to figure out which one is the truest to the original Ok forget this one -- DO NOT PUBLISH THIS REVIEW

Review: Have read it first, 25 years ago (first Hebrew translation, titled: "The Satan in Moscow")Must have read it another 25 times since, and every time I enjoy it more and find new sides and aspects in it. A MUST book.
