Rating: Summary: Classic of war and its effect on mens lives Review: I have known of this book for many years but only recently read it. The language suffers a little in translation but the harrowing story remains. This is a story of the unforgivable horror and vileness of war that everyone should read lest we forget what we commit young men to in war. Let us hope and pray that no more generations may have to endure such depths of inhumanity for the sake of other's goals. If we can acheive this....let us hope.
Rating: Summary: The Greatest Portrayal Review: I think one of the strongest aspects of this story is how it illustrates the psychological deconstruction of human beings. Not only does it unearth the horrors hidden from society, it really conveys the reality for these men -- all they know is war, just as Paul states on one occasion. It is an incredible human drama and the most powerful war story of all time. Everyone should be required to read it.
Rating: Summary: Terrifying Review: Most movies, tv shows, books, make war seem exciting and even sometimes fun. This is the furthurest thing from the truth. It is more terrifying than any horror movie (you are not killing men that deserve to die you are killing innocent human beings!) and you will never be able to fit in with society again IF you do survive. This book shows you the truth and the truth scares me to death.
Rating: Summary: I think that this book was written very well. Review: I think that this book has it's moments. Some parts were a bit graphic , but it was still expectional well written. I would not suggest young children reading it.
Rating: Summary: War's waste exemplified Review: Few stories, and none that are fictitious, capture the essense of waste as Remarque does. This is a story best read a number of times and at different stages of life. The tendency is for those studying English, rather than war, to take this book to their hearts yet this can deliver only a fraction of the book's impact. The tragedy of this book is that there is no happy ending, for, as we are all painfully aware, war has not stopped happening in the intervening 70 years. That the manner of its reporting has changed, as has our visceral interest in the worst details, makes no difference to the impact of All Quiet. In fact, quite the opposite. While today's armchair war-fanatic can become quite blase about WWII, Vietnam, The Falklands or any number of skirmishes since the Great War, none of us has the understanding or imagination to endure the horror of that wars. There are few survivors from the period and you would never guess, listening to them recount their exp! eriences, quite how mad the whole encounter became. So it becomes a rather unforeseen element of Remarque that his, and others', accounts of World War One should provide us with perhaps the sharpest, most valuable and humane insights into the nature of comradeship, hardship and hope. We have more to be thankful for, through this book, than most could ever begin to understand.
Rating: Summary: This is with out a doubt my favorite book! Review: All Quiet on the Western Front is a very powerful book. The message is clear and obvious, war irreparrably changes a person's view on the world, and yet the message lingers in one's mind for days. I read this book last year, and I still am in awe with the power it had. I reccomend this book to anyone!
Rating: Summary: A Man Destroyed by the Sorrow of War Review: I will be a sophomore this year in high school. Last year I read this book in English class and it completely reconstructed my perspective of war. This book thoroughly describes how Paul Baumer and his comrades were destroyed not only physically, but emotionally too. They did not have to die throught the shells that were snaring them, but only a phsycological death. Great book full of suspense, romance, and tragedy. I'm glad my teacher selected it.
Rating: Summary: Leaves a lasting impression on the reader Review: I had to read this book for a college history course. I'm glad I did. It gave me a different impression of a frontline soldier's experiences. The book makes you feel what the character is thinking. It's a well written, easy to read account of the non-glorifying aspects of war. You'll see every war veteran in a different light after reading this book.
Rating: Summary: Incredible. Review: This was one of the first books I ever read concerning war. It was this book that really illuminated the horrors of war for me. Remarque's detached and matter-of-fact descriptions of the conflict makes one feel uneasy. The protagonist is stunningly crafted by Remarque: emotionally detached, despising the conflict yet uncomfortable away from the front, and his incredible weariness. An incredibly heartbreaking story.
Rating: Summary: A book everyone should read Review: All Quiet on The Western Front is a great classic that goes deep into the soul of life and death. The book brings up great questions to ponder on the humankind of man and the nature of man itself. Great Read!
