Rating: Summary: A look into the youth of WWI Germany during warfare. Review: This book is a psycological look into the minds and thoughts of the youth who mainly fought in the early 1900 war, World War I. It's main character, paul Baumer, goes through many mental stages during the war. Dealing with death, sicknes, and sometimes a little insanity. It also shows the bitter honesty of those who fought the war and the heroes who remembered it.
Rating: Summary: good buck Review: I'm not a literature loving, artsie, liberal tree huger, but this was a good book.
Rating: Summary: A truly great classic of the post world war era. Review: All Quiet is not so much about the war itself as it is about the psychological grip the war had on the soldiers and the abuse they endured throughout their experiences. In many ways, it is an explanation of the lost generation; what happened that made Europe lose a whole generation of young men to maddness and desperation as well as the grave?
Rating: Summary: The best war novel ever Review: I was given this book as an assignment and wasn't expecting much...but it is the best book I have yet to read. It was confusing at points as you would get lost in the story. The book was so enjoyable that I read the whole thing over a weeks vacation camping out and on the plane. It gives a frightning look into the "great war" and is well written. Instead of giving a vague look of just bang, bang, boom, boom...you see inside the eyes of the "iron youth" with the bang, bang, boom, boom. Frightens you on what man can do in battle- good and pure evil.
Rating: Summary: Still immortal fiction Review: Only the WWII novel, The Triumph and the Glory, out of all of this era's great war novels can rival the old classic, All Quiet on the Western Front. This epic tale has lost none of its power despite many decades of time gone by since it was written.
Rating: Summary: Great book! Review: This really open up my eyes to the war.(saving Private Ryan helped
Rating: Summary: This breath-taking novel encompasses the whole of war. Review: Remarque's portrayal of WWI exhibits the "Iron Youth" of the early 1900s. However, he illustrates the lost generation of the war and the theme of man's inhumanity to man through his use of vivid animal imagery. Peace out.
Rating: Summary: eye opening Review: This is one of the most eye opening books I have ever read. My background is Greek, so I am very familiar with the events of WWII. But, this is defintely the first hand experience of WWII. I would recommend it to anyone, and evreyone. It also makes a good school project for students, some thing to consider.
Rating: Summary: I usually don't like war novels, this I enjoyed. Review: I had to read this in my sophmore year 1999 of high school. I enjoyed it. I am very picky about books and I liked this. I think it portrayed WWI well. I was swept in with Paul Baumer our main soldier from the German side. This book portays WWI's major lost the youth. I call them the Lost Generation. It shows a generation of men lost to war so that they are just numbers of men lost. It is complemented by Wifred Owens Poem Dulse Et Decorum Est which is How sweet and fitting it is. Here the last phrases ilustrates why the young men who were pulled in to the war. "Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,-- My friend, you would not tell with such high zest To children ardent for some desperate glory, The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est Pro patria mori. " Meaning how sweet and fitting it is to die for ones country.
Rating: Summary: The greatest war novel of all time Review: This is the greatest war novel of all time. From the perspective of a German soldier during World War I, this novel gives a close account of what life was like for the World War I soldier. A must read for everyone.
