Rating: Summary: The agony of war Review: I was told that this was an excellent book. When I read it, I was slightly disappointed because the book is all morals of the war and hardly any plot. Even with this degration, it is an excellent book.
Rating: Summary: A classic account against war... Review: Although fictional, it is a classic document of the devastation and tragedy of World War I. Arguably the best anti-war novel of all time, it is told from the perspective of a young German soldier (Paul Baumer) who tells all in first person narrative. No doubt excerpted from some of the war experiences of Remarque, who was drafted in 1916, wounded in 1917 and saw no further action. Obviously appalled by the enormous loss of life and devastation, "Im Westen nichts Neues" appeared in Germany in 1929--and became an instant best seller. Devoid of all romanticism and describing in graphic and burning prose the tragedy of war, where the individual could not surmount but be battered and eventually destroyed by blind and illogical hatred not of his own making. No wonder that Remarque became a "persona non grata" in the Third Reich, for the Nazis, true sons of the war, were angered by Remarque's pacifism and anti-militarism, eventually stripping him of German citizenship. A book destined to be a classic. For sheer fascination, it rivals the most thrilling modern novel. It is a very readable, interesting, easy to understand novel. And those are the very qualities which characterize classical books: simplicity, interest, readability.
Rating: Summary: war is torture Review: This book was one of great immense death and pain stricken boys who were kind of manipulated into registering for the war and when they did they found out it was'nt all it was cracked up to be. By it I mean patriotism. This horrable thing sometimes leads to death in the masses. This book was great at explaining this point.
Rating: Summary: Miss. Tierno fromm Tottenville LIESSSS! Review: My global studies teacher made the class read this novel. It was suppose to be good. Wait she said "great." Take it from me. I hated it!
Rating: Summary: An excellant war book Review: This book is the story of a boy of 19 inlists in the German army with his class mates. The book shows a realistic picture of what the WWI trench wars were like. The author describes the battles and fellings of the men very well. It also tells of how these boys quickly grew into men.
Rating: Summary: War Review: This book, more than any other book, shows that war is Hell. It shows how fighting or just being present during a battle or killing someone will ruin a persons life and life isn't worth living after a war and war just isn't worth fighting if it will cost so much. It hardly glorifies war and the scene at the end is extremely powerful.
Rating: Summary: Who would have thought! Review: I was coerced to read this book for a first year History class at university. I had heard it was boring from most of my friends who read it in high school sp I went into it with a bias. Low and behold it blew me away! One of the first war books I have read and I am already looking for others. It gives a surreal look into the "enemies" point of view and who would have thought "they" would have been hurt too! This book is a must read for all who are still bias against Germans and, well everyone! Just read it!
Rating: Summary: I Cried, I laughed , I cringed...And I kept on reading. Review: This book is beautifully poetic and dramatically moving, this is the "Saving Private Ryan" of literature, but of course this is about the first World War not the second. I finished it in 3 days, a record for me, and immediately read it again, no home library should be without this and no reader anywhere should miss out on this classic, I almost never thought of reading it until an old ripped up copy landed in my hands, read it!
Rating: Summary: Excellent Novel,Superb Author Review: This book is regarded by many as the best war novel ever written, and I can see why.It understates and deglamorises war.As some people dont understand,it is the ordinary things in life which makes this book so great (Food,Sleep,Good Clothes etc.)I agree, this book has some horrific fighting scenes but it is the shining friendship, surviving and of course, the black humour which make this novel especially unique.Do yourself a favour,READ THIS BOOK.
Rating: Summary: All Shattering in the Front Review: All Quiet in the Western Front is a very good book, But it was not yet to 5 stars. Although in the book their was a lot of good war scenes, and details of soldiers on the front line. When reading this book it gives me a nice way to see how horribly tragic, and terrifying it must have been to be involved in this war. When I was reading this book, I don't think that people should necessarily go to the war. But anyways, their were parts that I didn't like about the book. But I still recomend it to all teenagers. I'ts a very emotional, and terrifying book that everyboby would like it, No matter what age you are. You should read it. What are you waiting for. Rush to your nearest library and check this book out.
