Rating: Summary: All Quiet On The Western Front Book Review Review: The book All Quiet On The Western Front was an interesting book. I thought it was difficult to get into and that it wasn't very appealing. I may think this because I am not a big fan of war books. However, Remarque used stories from the time when he was in war and turned them into a fiction novel. I think that the movie portrays better what his novel is about. The movie from the nineteen 30's was very well put together. Overall I thought that the book was bland, boring and not a very interesting read. If you haven't experienced war or if you do not enjoy reading war based books then I do not recommend this book for you.
Rating: Summary: All Quiet on the Western Front Review: All Quiet on the Western Front was an amazing book with many levels of symbolism and incredible descriptive writing. It has a plot that shows a dramatic change in all the main characters as they fight to understand what they are fighting for. It is a must-read, especially for people graduating from high school.
Rating: Summary: Kimberly's review Review: I think at All Quiet on the Western Front is an extreimly good book. It remnds me a lot of Saving Private Ryan. I think that in order to have interest in the book and continue to read it you must have interest in the "war scene". I recomend this to High School students and is a book that everyone needs to read! It is very heart felt and shows how individuals feel, or atleast one individuals perspective.
Rating: Summary: Perhaps the best war novel ever written Review: What is war? Is it a great elated venture undertaken out of patriotic and idealistic motives? Or is it a senseless purposeless dying in the trenches? Who makes wars happen - the emperors, governments and generals who never starve, freeze and get shot at in those trenches or the common people that get butchered as cattle by millions of shells, drown in the mud and get gassed? Through the eyes of Paul Baumer and his comrades we experience the nasty madness of war, when all the great human ideas and ideals are reduces to the animalistic instinct to dig in deep in the ground and survive the barrage of the enemy artillery. I can't imagine anyone reading this book and not being moved by Paul's sincere deliberations and stinging questions: "Why are my friends dying out here? Who needs this war? Can I survive this war and go back to being who I was before it?" Remarque completely debunks the myth of war as a noble and lofty enterprise. It should be a part of mandatory reading in all the military academies. All Quiet On The Western Front is without a doubt one of the most humane books ever written. You simply must read it at some point of your life.
Rating: Summary: I could see it all happening. Review: Remarque's use of simple language and the honest delivery of his words made the book come alive. I could see it all happening, the events of decades past, vividly in my mind. It felt like Paul was speaking to me, telling me a painful story effectively without the use of over-dramatized termonology or gory details. The book told me what I needed to know. War destroys lives. No matter what the long term goal or the projected outcome of the blood bath, war can only be seen in a negative light. But,this novel doesn't put World War I in the spotlight and point out all of its negative aspects. Remarque just told it like it was and won me over in the process.
Rating: Summary: A Bit Disappointed... Review: After reading many of the reviews praising this title, I expected more than what the book offered. Overall, this book was okay but I had some problems with it. First of all, I thought the author's description of locations and places was completely lacking...I hardly felt as if I was there with Paul in the trenches or in the bombed out town, etc. because I felt I had not been given enough detail of the surroundings. Secondly, I thought the ending was pretty terrible. Not because of what happened (I expected as much) but because of the way it was written. I felt as if the ending was rushed and it left me, the reader, wondering what happened, exactly. However, I don't want to say more so I don't spoil it for those who haven't read it. I just want to say that while I think this is worthy of a read, it isn't "the masterpiece" that some people have made it out to be. I have read a lot of other books in the same genre that are much better written.
Rating: Summary: All Quiet on the Western Front Review: This novel is an excellent story of a young man's forced growth into adulthood. Paul Baumer, the narrator, is a 20 year-old German soldier in World War I that enlisted right after high school. He sees his comrades fall from shrapnel, gas, bombs, and bullets, one by one. He is made to see the atrocities of war: the amputations, the loneliness, the fear, the anticipation, and the slow deaths. Paul often wonders of his own fate, and trys to remain clear-headed to save his life on the front.I chose this book from a list of about 20 titles, with only a faint knowledge of the story line. It was a gripping story, from the first chapter to the last, and held my attention right up to the end. I was able to identify with the narrator as he tried to maintain his sanity in a world of chaos, and how he tried to not forget his youth despite the forced maturity that comes with, in his case, being a soldier.
Rating: Summary: The truth about war Review: This novel by Erich Maria Remarque proves to be breathtaking and tearjerking as it documents the experience of a young German soldier during the first world war. It begins as Paul Baumer, the narrator of this tale, enlists in the army, along with three of his friends, soon after graduating from high school. Paul's journey takes him to the frontlines of battle where he witnesses firsthand the horrors of the war. He experiences his first bombardment within days of his arrival and learns to share his space with lice and rats. He sees men fall from the effects of gas inhalation and others give up on life rather than live as cripples or amputees. He sees his friends die, one by one, and wonders what the future will hold for those who survive. This book does an excellent job of capturing the truth about war. It gives an accurate account of life on the frontline from a soldier's perspective. It also shows how the war affected the many young men who enlisted soon after graduating. Many did not survive and those who did lived with the horrific memories of their experience. If you are interested in reading a book that makes you feel apart of the story, I recommend All Quiet on the Western Front.
Rating: Summary: must read! Review: it's so realistic .. I experienced and felt almost same thing in the Army(it's compulsory in mY native country)the author depicted enlistmen's life and what they really think ,feel, want perfectly.. it's great nobel must read every folks who think war must be glorious thing
Rating: Summary: All quiet? Review: Reading this book was an enforced choice. War is boring, it'll be about English men saying things like "Tally ho!" and Germans saying "Ach tung!" How wrong could I be. 15 years later, the pictures still haunt me. I can't hear the words 'Western Front' without remembering the heart-rending fight for survival and sanity faced in every minute of every day by these young men, who had held such visions about the nobilty of war. Anyone who doubts the madness, brutality and hatred of war must read this book. Anyone who doubts the bravery, courage and detirmination of these soldiers obviously never has.
