Rating: Summary: War cannot be defined by flags or maps or generals Review: I picked this book off of a dusty old shelf where it had sat for maybe as long as 60 years. I remembered hearing that it had been adapted into one of the first anti-war films ever made, and therefore I decided to give the book I try. It is wonderful, it is what the film "Saving Private Ryan" should have been and it bravely breaks down barriers between right and wrong and good and bad and shows that there are no such distinctions in war. I love this book because its central characters are average soldiers, not generals, and so the war is not portrayed as a game and it is in no way definite. In History classes we learn the causes and the effects of wars on countries, we see the battle fields on maps, we learn the strategy, and yet we rarely have the opportunity to hear about the poor young men who are killing one another for no clear reason and whose only strategy is survival. "All Quiet On the Western Front" is the story of the enemy and the enemy is war.
Rating: Summary: Very Good Review: I read this book for my AP English class in 9th grade. At first I thought it was pretty dull. And me not being very into war novels, I really didn't give it a chance. Then I started getting into it. It was very interesting the way Remarque used his words. I could see everything in my mind as it unfolded. I thought the ending was pretty sad. I highly recommend this book!
Rating: Summary: Great Novel Review: All Quiet on the Western Front is definitely the greatest war novel ever written. It greatly displays the emotion and sadness that war causes. It describes the pain and wrongness that war is all about and makes you think twice when talking about war. It tells the story of how war can destroy countries and how war propoganda is all lies. Once you start reading, you won't want to put it down.
Rating: Summary: A Brilliant book..... Review: It is good that this book is viewed in the US as a must-read for almost every child. It is rare here that we ever have to read anything that acknowledges any other perspective but our own (i.e. non-American)-- but when we are forced to do this, here, through the life of Paul.... one becomes forced to be humanitarian and no longer nationalistic. This book brings individual tragedies to the eye of the universal. So imporant, so important. One of the sort of books that can change ones life. Please read it if you haven't.
Rating: Summary: A Masterpiece That Reveals the Soldier's Life Review: I first picked up this book and was intrigued that it was written about Germans in WWI. Since I had little knowledge of this army in a war I knew little of, I immediately read it, finishing in a few days. Having just finished CATCH-22 (which I suggest if you are in for humor with information), this book was rather a downer. All the same, I give it an equal five stars. This book shows the German soldier's feelings, fears, and lifestyle during the Great War. I admit that the prose is not exactly the most poetic, but being that it is a translation, I give it some slack. Really great book, highly recommeded.
Rating: Summary: All Quiet on the Western Front Review: All Quiet on the Western Front is a very good book to read, it is not the best you can get, but it is good. By reading the book you learn a lot about World War I. Also it is very detailed and 295 pages long. All Quiet on the Western Front is about some young men almost in their twenty's that belong to the second company of Germany. It starts that they loose quite a few men and get much more food than usual, Paul Baumer is the main character and the narrator also, and as things happen he starts talking about other experiences. Everything is fine until the first bombardment comes, the second company goes from 150 to 32 men in total. Like a miracle Paul and most of his friends survive. Then Baumer goes back home for six weeks and then comes back. Now he isn't with his friends anymore, then after a while he finds them and everything starts happening again, they are in war and fighting for survival. Some of my favorite parts are when they swim acroos a canal to visit some women, this makes it even more real. Another part I liked a lot was a time that they went to a hospital, a friend of them was sent to the death room and miraculously came back. This is a great war novel by Erich Maria Remarque, the novel was translated from german to english. If you like historical fiction you will love this book
Rating: Summary: This is a review of the tape Review: The unabridged version of "All Quiet on the Western Front" has 5 cassettes and takes considerably longer than the movie to unfold. You have time to think in-between the words. If this is the version with translation by A.W. Wheen and Narrated by Frank Muller then you are in for a treat. As Frank even in his monotone way makes you feel that these thoughts are coming from your head. The cover has a picture that actually relates to a section in the book. I spent some time in the U.S. Army and what is really weird is except for the technology, I can relate to the people and attitudes in the book. He describes training, leaves, antics in the front, and comradeship. If you spent anytime in the military you should be able to extrapolate many things that he just implies. Anyway even if you have read the book or seen the movies the tape is an added dimension that should not be missed.

It shows their perception of the world having been exposed to war and how there lives are changed as a consequence of the war. The author Erich Maria Remarque Gives a brutal description of the war what it is like to be in the war and the person you become .I was assigned to reed this book and I liked it a lot. I especially enjoyed for once being in the other side of the story since it is told by a German perspective. This is one of those books that you pickup and cant put down..
