Summary: Great book, no matter what type of book you are into!
Review: I read "All Quiet on the Western Front" this past year, Iwas a sophmore in high school. I had just previously read "Catch 22" by Joseph Heller. This book is more approachable, than Catch-22. The characters in both books are great, but All Quiet is much deeper in the emotion factor than Catch-22. This is a great book to read, and if you love this book, I suggest reading catch-22 afterwards. These may be perhaps the 2 best books I have ever read back-to-back. I give All Quiet on the Western Front 5 stars for its great effects on the human emotion, and it shows you the real effects of war. I give Catch-22 5 stars, but if Amazon had 6 stars, Catch-22 would recieve 6 and All Quiet would get a 5 and 3/4 stars. (I even named my screen name after All Quiet's main character!)

Summary: Bloody as hell
Review: The greatest war novel of all time. At least it is according to the publisher. But maybe he is right, I don't know. I haven't read that many war novels to make that call. But I can tell you that it is a bloody good book. Especially bloody. Erich Maria Remarque's All quiet on the Western front is the story about Paul Bäumer, a soldier in the German army during World War I. And it is an impressive one. The writer also served in the army during that war and a lot of the book is probably biographic. If you are interested in that war, or if you just want to read a really good war novel go get this one. You can probably buy it real cheap too because the book was first published in 1928. There should be a lot of copies around.

Summary: Paul, and the war
Review: If ever a book deserved more stars than five, this is the one. Remarque wrote the best war novel in existence. This book is the one book every school should require because there is so much wisdom in it. The war itself is seen most clearly not on the battlefield but in the slow-atrophy-of-the-soul-effect it has on Paul, the German soldier. There has been no one before or since to prove there is any better way to write an anti-war novel. If you read this you will be a better person, plain and simple. Why else read a book.

Summary: Perfection
Review: In grade 9 History our teacher showed us the movie All Quiet on the Western front. The next weekend i took out the book to see how it compared to the movie. AMAZING! I couldn't believe how well written it was considering that it was written in like 1930, in German! The characters are believable, the story is classic and the whole thing was painfully realistic.
MY FAVOURITE BOOK!

Summary: Can't Put Down Book!
Review: "All Quiet on the Western Front" was a great historical fiction book that expressed how a soldier feels during war. The author clearly described details to help the reader understand the events of the book and the feelings of the main character. It was a great book that i could not put down, during every chapter there was something new and exciting happening. This is a great book to read if you are a young person intersted in the feelings and events that happen to a soldier during a war.

Summary: One of the most powerful books I've ever read
Review: Unlike most people who have read this, I didn't read it until my mid 20s, which was last year as a matter of fact. I thought this book was an easy read. Sometimes complicated writing styles work, sometimes simple writing styles do. I definitely think this is an example of the latter. There were a few times during this book where the emotional power of it made me cry. Especially the last chapter. Highly recommended to anyone who doesn't buy into patriotic b.s.

Summary: I Didn't Expect This!
Review: Like a lot of the people reviewing this, I had to read this book for school. As most books on summer reading lists are, I expected it to be amzingly dull. But I started getting into it and I discovered that this was a truly amazing book. My favorite passages are the one on page 84, the one about when the soldiers are talking about the things that they learned in school and how it didn't help them; pg 101, the passage about Chance; pg 223, Paul's speech to the dead French soldier; and the one where they sit around discussing how exactly war gets started. My favorite character is Tjaden. It's just an amazing book. I was expecting a very dull book and this book ended up being one of my all-time favorites. I only finished it about 2 weeks ago and I actually started reading it again! This is a book that you'll never forget.

Summary: A beautiful book worth reading
Review: Perhaps one of the most beautiful books ever written, but if you're looking for a typical war story glorifying sacrifice for God and country, you won't find it here. You will find the horror, chaos, loss, and disillusionment more common in actual war. Forget glory and let yourself be caught in a heart renching story which just might change your prespectives on life.

Summary: Very satisfying.
Review: If you have ever read a book or taken a class on World War I, you know it was horrific. This book adapted the terror of the trenches in a way no history book or lecture ever has for me. The novel is centered around a young group of war-hardened German soldiers. They are not overly patriotic, but fight hard and with courage knowing that the war will soon be over. The depictions of violence are pretty tame by the 21st centuries' standards, but that doesn't in any way detract from the novels appeal. This book can be enjoyed by just about anyone, even readers who are not history buffs.

Summary: THE GREATEST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ
Review: I STILL GO TO SCHOOL, BUT I WAS ASKED MY MY FATHER TO READ THIS BOOK, AS HE WAS KEEN FOR ME TO READ IT. AFTER READING IT, I HAVE THOUGHT OF IT AS THE GREATEST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ, ALTHOUGH I STILL HAVEN'T READ AS MANY BOOKS AS A GROWN ADULT HAS. I STILL FEEL THAT THE THEME OF THE BOOK, AND THE OVERALL MESSAGE IS CRYSTAL CLEAR TO ANY READER, AND IT IS A BOOK THAT HAS MADE ME REALLY THINK ABOUT THE HORRORS OF WAR, AND HAS GIVEN ME MY OWN PERSPECTIVE ON WHAT IT REALLY IS. RATHER THEN GETTING INTO THAT, I JUST THINK THAT IT IS IMPORTANT FOR PEOPLE OF MY AGE TO READ A BOOK LIKE THIS, (AND HONESTLY, IT IS A ONE OF A KIND)AS IT TRULY BROADENS OUR PRESPECTIVE ON SUFFERING, AND WAR. THIS PERSPECTIVE CAN ONLY BE GAINED REALLY BY BEING SUBJECTED TO THE WAR IN THIS CASE, OR, READING A BOOK WRITTEN BY A MAN WHOM EXPERIENCED AND SAW HIS WHOLE GENERATION DESTROYED. THIS IS WHY I BELIEVE THAT ERICH MARIA REMARQUE IS ONE OF THE GREATEST WRITERS OF THE 20TH CENTURY, AND THIS BOOK WHICH DOES NOT ROMANTICISE WAR, RATHER TELLS YOU THE TRUTH IS ONE THAT SHOULD BE READ BY ALL OF US, WHEN WE COME TO AN AGE WHERE WE CAN APPRECIATE THIS.

I ORIGINALLY READ A MORE MODERN TRANSLATION AND ENJOYED IT VERY MUCH, BUT BECAUSE I LOVE THIS BOOK SO MUCH, MY FATHER ACTUALLY FOUND A COPY OF A.W. WHEEN'S TRANSLATION FROM 1962, WHICH IS THE FIRST TRANSLATION FROM GERMAN- THIS EDITION CANNOT BE BEATEN.

EVERYONE SHOULD READ THIS BOOK AND REMEMBER IT FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES- I DEFINITELY WILL.
