Summary: overdose of wordplay, overwhelmingly pessimistic
Review: Agreed, wordplay is original and impactful but after awhile it becomes a real chore. Similarly her characters and storyline become a burden, oversteeped as they are in their dysfunctionality and tragic overtones. More of a showcase for prose lovers on use of metaphors.

Summary: Unforgettable - a Must Read
Review: In my (albeit limited) experience, Indian authors have a way of writing that gives a novel a visual impact - and Roy is certainly no exception. This is one of the best books I've ever read because of the poetic writing and the enchanting character development. This story has some deep, dark secrets that may catch the reader by surprise, but if you let the story carry you along with it, you're in for a wonderful ride.

Summary: A fantastic, compelling read
Review: Get this book! It's one of the most original books I have read in a long long time. I am still reeling from the impact of the story -- told in Ms. Roy's unparalleled prose and voice.

Summary: 3 stars for originality--but that's all.
Review: Roy is being lauded mainly b/c her subject is NEW to mostpeople. I like the fact that she exposes discrimination and likesubjects, but frankly the book was kind of boring.

Review: This Book is the most breathtaking novel i have ever read!

Summary: Roy - author of boring things
Review: With her lofty poetic literary style, her abstract new-age-Indian story telling ability, her strange and pointless social observations, and her annoying multitudes of excessively dysfunctional characters, Roy makes me go beddy-bye.

Summary: A fascinating story
Review: This book has touched me deeply. This is one of the best books I have ever read. It was able to fully capture my heart and soul. The time I spent reading this amazing book, are treasured. I lived with people I have not yet met, and dreamed with minds I have not yet got to know. I must say Arundhati Roy is an amazing writer with a talent I have not seen before. The story seems so real and so true. The descriptions are so vivid and the flashbacks just make it all more interesting. A tension is built up and at the end you are not disappointed. I truly recomend this book to anyone who is able to enjoy true experiences, and a story that will touch you like nothing has ever been able to before.

Summary: Uncomparible.
Review: "The God of Small Things" is undoubtedly THE BEST novel I have ever read (and I average a book every 3 days). Roy is a poet, a tapestry weaver, and a tour guide. Although I became completely involved in the characters, I felt like Scrooge in "A Christmas Carol"; I was an observer being guided through worlds I didn't know existed and feeling the rush of understanding as the fragments were knitted together and the tapestry completed. This novel has upped my expectations of all literature; having read 20 books since, I have yet to find one that quenches my literary thirst like this one.

Summary: Gorgeously Written First Novel
Review: So much has already been said about Arundhati Roy's debut novel; years later, it is still widely discussed for its fresh and complex prose and easy movement between the past and present culminating into somewhat of a mystery novel. Sadness and mysticism are rampant in this book which reminds us of the inherent trauma of tragedy.
