Rating: Summary: great book Review: After reading other reviews, I can not add much to them, it brought laughter and tears to many others. I just wanted to say that I never thought that a book could bring out such emotions as this one.
Rating: Summary: THE BEST Review: I catch myself thinking about what Owen would do in certain situations and I used to find myself feeling a little foolish for harboring such thoughts. But after reading these reviews and finding out that there are others out there like myself who have found this great book, I am proud to say that Owen lives in my thoughts. The story is so well told- something I find only Irving masters. I recommend Cider House, too.
Rating: Summary: Best book of the year unanimously voted by Readers' Society. Review: Too bad we couldn't rate this book an 11. We are the Readers' Society of our school, and we try to read the best books, and we guess (no, we KNOW) that this book was a good (no, GREAT) choice. Very well thought out. A little difficult getting started, but once we got into it (which didn't take that long), we couldn't put it down. So much detail, and we loved how everything fit together. Owen had us laughing throughout the entire book. Hip hip hooray for John Irving! Yay! :)
Rating: Summary: This is John Irving's world; we just live in it! Review: Have you ever read a book that has made it seem that you will never be able to enjoy a different one? This book is that good. John Irving is a master of plot: every seemingly random digression is brought together at the climax in such a seamless, creative manner: I was in awe! The completion of A Prayer for Owen Meany leaves the reader in tears and sore from days of laughing so hard your stomach muscles hurt. This novel is full of humor and the wonderful absurdity of life. Read it again and again and recommend it to all your friends and family! If you ever get a chance to see a J. Irving reading, GO! I was lucky enough to attend college in his home-state and heard him read the first chapter from A Son of the Circus. He is just as funny in person! (and cute, although happily married as one of my friends discovered after proposing marriage after the reading!...He let her down easy.) P.S. He has a new novel coming out this year! His # 2 in my opinion: Cider House Rules.
Rating: Summary: Excellent, best book I have ever read! Review: This novel envelops the life of one man, but in fact, depicts the lives of the common lost American. This is the only novel in which I have openly cried and laughed from page to page. Not only is it a rollercoaster of the emotions, however, it presents the reader with a glimpse of hope in an unenhanted world. I do have one question to people who have read the book though, what do you think tha armadillo really symbolizes?
Rating: Summary: Impossible to read and not come out changed. Review: There are few books one can truly describe as "life changing." Irving's "A Prayer For Owen Meany" is one of them. Owen's sense of purpose is definitely something to be envied. A book to be read much more than just once.
Rating: Summary: THIS BOOK RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I GIVE IT AN 11! Review: This is one of the greatest books ever written. After reading a few of the negative reviews I am shocked. One person said that Irving sets you up for the ending and that it is so predictable. Well unless you have some kind of mental telepathy, there is no way you as the reader could ever guess the ending to this one. I must say, however, that the first chapter or two are a bit slow, but stick with it because it will take you on an emotional roller-coaster.
Rating: Summary: Sometimes, On A Whim, You Discover The Best Things Review: I read "A Prayer For Owen Meany" about a year and a half ago, after letting it sit on my bookshelf for...a long time. I was captivated. I laughed out loud in parts (the Christmas Pageant was WONDERFUL!), and THE SHOT at the end totally blew me away. It was stunning. Read this book. Read it, read it, read it!!!!
Rating: Summary: ONE OF BEST BOOKS EVER READ Review: A Prayer For Owen Meany is the second book by John Irving I've read and both books are the best ones I have ever read in my life. And I am a very tough critic when it comes to fiction. He is the only author who has ever made me cry while reading his novels. This is the only book that made me break down into tears twice automatically. His twists, his turns, the way he sculpts the plot and sets everything up is almost in the traidtion that Hitchcock used to direct his films. Everything comes together in the final chapter as surprise upon surprise is revealed. This book will open your eyes both literally and figuratively, despite a lot of boring political opinionated crap. Irving also has the amazing power to make you laugh out loud. These are some heartbreaking and hearttouching characters you will never forget as long as you live. PS--I liked "The Cider House Rules" just a tad bit better.
Rating: Summary: In the top five of my all time favorites. Review: I read an average of 5 books a week but I can't think of any book that has moved me like A Prayer for Owen Meany. It is one of the few books I re-read every couple of years. Strong non-denominational spirituality, it makes you WANT to believe. A must read.
