Rating: Summary: no wonder there are so many 10's here, Review: the book lives up to the hype you read here. one that has the ability to truly change your life. I don't know anyone who doesn't like this book. and the detail, it is truly dickensian. you will not be disappointed, unless you don't buy it in hardback, cause you will want to read it over and over again.
Rating: Summary: One of the Greats. Period. No dissenters need apply. Review: There are a few books that I re-read every year. I can count them on my hand. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. Williams' Memory Sorrow and Thorn. Stephen King's It. And this, Irving's greatest novel. I can't hype it enough. One of the best stories about childhood and the 1960's ever written. Faith, as defined by this novel, is simply this - I need no proof, for I have no doubt. The world would be a much better place if we all believed that. Dickens would have been proud of Irving's work here. Read it, or suffer the fate of the school headmaster in the novel. (You'll have to read it to find out.) Loved it, loved it, loved it.
Rating: Summary: Because of Owen Meany ,I too now believe in God..I think? Review: John Irving wrote this book so that I could feel good about what for many years was a longstanding nagging personal doubt. Because of Owen Meany I too have become more religious and devote in my doubting. Read this book (be patient and attentive because it all comes together!)
Rating: Summary: Faith, humility, humaness, and the capacity for love Review: Often friends ask,"I need something to read, what do you recommend?", and I immediatly answer,"A PRAYER FOR OWEN MEANY". Sure there are some ramblings of a political nature...it captures a moment in time when MOST echoed the anti-war sentiment, but that is only a fraction of what the story is about. Faith, which the world could use more of, and destiny are the key ingredients to this unforgettable romp through adolescence and adulthood that leads to a feeling of inspiration. Owen's character makes you want to be better, do better and develop a faith of your own.
Rating: Summary: What a story! Review: I just finished reading Owen Meany yesterday and I am sad that the book had to come to an end. I loved the story! I have had a lot of good friends in my life but none like Owen. The book made me think of the silly things I've done with my friends and I thought "the shot" was just another quirky thing they did together. I really made me stop and replay the entire book in my mind when it finally came to a close. I know I will read it again.
Rating: Summary: Irving touches readers every emotion Review: I am a senior in high school, and I just finished reading _A Prayer for Owen Meany_ for an Advanced Contemporary Literature class that I am enrolled in. This book alone made the class worth taking. Irving successfully defines such deep topics as faith, destiny, and loyalty while keeping the reader interested with his amazing stroy-telling abilities and incredible sense of humor. His effective uses of foreshadowing and character development lead me into an ending that left me speechless. If this book left such an impression on a senior in high school who finished this book during prom weekend, think how this book will impact you. Irving wrote a must read with _A Prayer for Owen Meany_!
Rating: Summary: My favorite novel of all time. Review: I've been reading books practically since I was born, and _A Prayer for Owen Meany_ is my favorite. It superceded my previous favorite, _A Tale of Two Cities_, and I believe that anyone who is familiar with the grand fictional talents of Mr. Dickens will find his spiritual successor in Mr. Irving. A true talent of our times.
Rating: Summary: Made me cry with laughter Review: Denise had been wittering on about this book for as long as I can remember. It joined her list of objects that had inexplicably gone missing, and she constantly searches for, the list is; 4 valium, 1 Rohypnol, 1 diary, 'A Prayer For Owen Meany' by John Irving, and a tooth that fell out in an Indonesian restaurant. She still hasn't found the pills, is still concerned about the diary, but she found this whacking great big copy of 'A Prayer For Owen Meany', and shrieked, "THERE IT IS! Right there, in the error area". She forced it upon me, and I took it home. Being a big hard-back, meant it was unsuitable for tube travelling. I did try it, but with a rucksack, two bags of shopping from Tesco Metro, a limp, and an umbrella, it could prove a bit of a struggle, so it stayed in the bedroom, keeping an eye on things. I walked into this book with no preconceptions, and it became, for about a month, one of the best boyfriends I've ever had. Irving's writing is clean, sharp, detailed and compelling. I'd get home from work, wouldn't think about the television, I'd go straight upstairs and get into bed with a cup of tea, a joint, and John Irving. This book did what no other book has ever done before, it made me cry with laughter. All alone in the house, weeping and creasing up, like a lunatic. Love that. ..Owen Meany AND at the end of the book, it moved me once again, but on a much profounder level whilst still bringing a lump to the throat. What's it about? A weird little boy, with a strange voice, in a small town, in America, somewhere. There's a network of fascinating characters who waiver between being cartoon like, and just like people you know. It's deep, hilarious, sad, and though it's an old one, I thought I'd review it anyway, 'cause I wanted to share it with you, like Denise did with me, and maybe we'll all love one another a little more, in the future...
Rating: Summary: The best book I will ever read! Review: I have just finished reading "A Prayer for Owen Meany" as an English assignment for school. I absolutely loved the book, and Owen Meany. I keep expecting to see him at the gym practicing "the move," or at the airport, waiting for those "penguins" to show up. Owen Meany has touched my heart, and will not soon be forgoten.
Rating: Summary: If you don't like to show emotions, don't read this book! Review: Maybe if we all had enough FAITH we could will Owen Meany to life. He's somebody I would like to know.
